Ember is where it's at. The app also has steep timers for tea, which is what I use the ember for. It says that it holds 14 oz which is perfect for two 6 oz servings of tea, with room for cream and sugar. I love being able to steep my tea without hovering over it. The app either notifies you on the phone or your watch that your tea is ready. It will notify you again when the tea reaches the temperature you set and it holds it there. It can tell when there is nothing inside the cup and turn itself off. I love that I can walk away, come back, and have a perfect cup of tea.
I received both an Ember mug and a Nextmug for Christmas last year. I like them both, but can’t recommend the Ember mug because I’ve had to replace the charging coaster twice. Ember customer service would not provide a replacement either time.
I like my ember mug 2, but I wish I would hold the temperature 10F higher than it does. Its slightly below the temp where I enjoy my coffee at. Still great though! Looks like the Netmug would put me where I want my coffee temp at. Thanks for the side by side comparison.
Ok, so I bought the ember mug because I saw one of your videos on the ember mug vs the ember travel mug. I saw this after buying it and I’m so grateful for your videos!
Biggest issue with my Ember(2) is that i'm on the 2nd charger coaster. Replaced under warranty initially - the inner charging ping slightly recedes and this has happened with the 2nd coaster now too - so its now just an expensive mug!!
I haven't tried the NextMug but right off, I like the style better. Also, the Ember mug continuously disconnects from my phone, and the only way to reconnect it is to re-pair again. Which isn't a big deal because once you set your LED color and temperature the app is really no longer needed. The one thing the Ember mug might have going for it is the reheat times- Because that's something I'll often do. And the power button is on the bottom which is kind of a pain in the ass. Thanks for sharing. I'm definitely gonna test out the NextMug next 😁
Thank you for this review, and I agree w/it 100 percent. You saved my from buying and trying the NextMug which Ive seen for like as little as 20 bucks less than the ember 2 16 oz. Yes the ember is IMO way overpriced, but I like you can no longer live w/o it. It is also my goto gift for fellow coffee snobnerds. I'd like to see for under 60 US a cradle-less ubiquitous water resistant temperature control mug. The cradle is the Achille's heel of the emug. if it gets wet with acidic coffee or just water the positive negative "nodes" cause electrolysis and quickly erode. I've had several replaced (E's customer service via text was great) at 120 bucks plus, the cup should have "Qi" fully cordless charging base, and be dishwater AOK. The app is cute, but I'd rather just have my temp control integral to the mug, spend enough time on my freaking phone, ya know. I drink my coffee always black, and simply rinse after each brew before recharging. A usb c charger with a silicone plug like you see on some weatherproof devices like bluetooth speakers would be just dandy in my case. I do like the 1 degree temp gradations, though I bet I'd be fine with a hi med lo sitch if it was like 130 135 140 F, Now here's a million dollar idea that would work on non insulated cups and bowls, something you attach/ stick on to your existing say ceramic cup or bowl that would regulate the heat. Be sure and profit share w/ me. Thanks for the review, any review that convinces me not to acquire something is a good one.Doesn't mean the reviewed item isnt a good match for another. If the NM was at a MUCH lower price point I'd jump on it.
I really like Ember mug. I have been using mine for 3 years now and I had to replace the charging station twice because one of the pins gets recessed and it won't charge anymore. I noticed that one pin of yours is recessed too.
My next mug failed to charge after half a year, I am not a electronics person, I just threw it out instead of trying to ask for support. I will give the ember mug a try.
I've used my Ember mug for 4 years... 3 times per day. I wish it would stop working completely so I can justify getting a new one, lol. Nicer colors now. The battery does not hold a charge... However, I work from my desk... So the charging plate is always around to keep it going.
I like my Ember, used it daily for over a year now. Two knocks are at 140F my battery only lasts about 45 minutes. And on the app, I would prefer the battery % on the same screen as the current temp/dial. I've written into Ember on this, and they don't agree lol.
Great review! The price tag attached is a bit of an overkill for both, but ultimately for those who like the nice luxuries it is a very nice purchase. I personally would not buy one for myself, but as a gift it seems like a great pickup for coffee and tea enthusiasts!
I had an Ember, but it was never hot enough for my liking. So I decided to look around for a better product and came across the Ksitoo mug. This product easily could reach my desired temperate, and could be used with or without the app. My Ember has ceased working as it does have a limit on how many times it can be recharged. I expect the Kistoo to last longer. Perhaps you can review the Ksitoo and see how you find it.
Anyone else had issues with the Ember no longer charging and no longer being able to connect with the app (with a Google 6 Pro)? The customer service was awful.
Thank you. This is very helpful. The Ember mug looks great but has limited support for android apps, and I've had major issues even on an iphone13. Also, even the Apple app is flakey. I need to push the button and reconnect to Bluetooth every day. Ember support was no help. One thing that did help is factory resetting my Apple iphone13. It worked for a while but then went back to a lost connection. I do have a smart home, almost 100 devices, but that should not be an issue since almost all use Wi-Fi. I Agree on 5 degree gap. It's a deal breaker. I gave IOS 2 years, but always had my Android as a backup. Now I keep my iPhone, but I use it only for the Ember app and Wine Spectator, since Wine Spectator also doesn't support Android devices. BTW, it's not as if I have some off the wall Android device. All my Android phones have been Pixels. Amber will not work on any of them, even my current Pixel 8.
Yes they are Overpriced and unnecessary. But they do a simple thing really well. Never picking up a cold cup of coffee is amazing. You will appreciate it every time you use it and miss it every time it's not there.
Only own an Ember, but the one downside, aside from the obvious price point, is the app for the Ember. It was a pain to connect the mug to the app and update the firmware, for both android and iOS
I purchased the Nextmug. I love the design shape. I don't have to add another app to my phone and this mug was designed to HOLD the temperature not reheat the drink. And as for the lid, I've got to ask, when does a lid interfere with the enjoyment of the drink ??? This comparison reminds me of the IPhone and Android comparisons by Apple enthusiasts which must justify their costly purchase. LOL
A lid doesn’t allow you to have the same smell experience while drinking, which is a big part of taste! Lids certainly have a time and a place, but a lazy Sunday on the couch isn’t one of them
OK that's your experience. I love the fact that the lid holds in the heat keeping my expensive coffee hot longer. I don't understand why Ember doesn't give you that option.
@@merionburns6309Ember do sell a lid for the mug on their site under the accessories section. Unfortunately only seems to be (officially) available in the USA, but amazon offers it as an imported item to me (in the UK)
If you put your hot beverage in a yeti, coffee or an offbrand, it literally stays hot for about 6 to 8 hours of which you’ve probably drank it at that point and it travels well
Yes, until there is enough air in the sealed vessel for it to cool the drink significantly. Say if you drink half and then stop for a bit. Also, a yeti or any thermos assumes you have a sealed thermos with a lid. This is a great solution as it’s still an open lid drinking experience which many prefer
Great video, thanks. I would definitaly go with ember, but i ask myself, how is it with the material ... health? And how is it, if i use metal spoon? Or other spoon better? And also, there are metalic colors, which i would like to buy. Does they have different material?
Good question, which I'm also curious about. I read that the Ember mug is easily scratched by stirring with a metal spoon. Curious if the Ember 2 was improved in this respect, and whether the Next Mug has the same vulnerability.

I love my ember mug. Its expensive and maybe a little "extra", but once you've used one you are ruined forever. Also, what is that wooden coaster at the 8 second mark?
When you set both NextMug and Ember to their highest temperature, is the NextMug hotter than the Ember? I use the NextMug at its highest setting (piping hot), and wouldn't want the Ember if it didn't keep my tea as hot as the NextMug does.
Just to add, Ember is listed as going up to 145 F, where piping hot on the NextMug is listed as 150 F. So I assume that means the Ember cannot keep drinks as hot as the NextMug can.

$15 for a lid (Ember) that should be included is insane. Those cost MAYBE 25 cents to make. That's a solid reason NOT to get the Ember. I think your evaluation was quite biased. You started out downplaying the Next and praising the Ember. Not a good start. As for temperature control, I would never put a liquid in a cup and expect the cup to raise the temp. If I used tea or coffee, I would always have it hot before adding it. So the cups only need to maintain temp, not heat it up. You gushed about the shape of one and poo-pooed the other. I happen to think the opposite. So your evaluation should have pointed it out, but since the shape has NOTHING to do with the function, you should have stopped there. I do like the fact the LED on the Ember is programmable, but anytime an appliance needs an App to function, it's an immediate NO for me. It's a coffee cup, not a computer.
Thanks. I posted this comment before I saw the part about Nextmug heating slowly...i happen to use my Ember for heating coffee regularly! Maybe Nextmug 2.0 will be more powerful.

Not if you're comparing open mug to open mug. Yes, either will have drastically longer battery life with a lid on. That's just physics and was discussed :)
I've purchase two ember mugs and one ember travel mug at different times and all stopped charging after a year. If you are ok with paying to get a year's worth of use, then enjoy! They worked well until they didn't.

Don't buy EMBER / faulty design: The charger for the Ember Mug has two pins to facilitate charging. Problem is that these pins consistently and frequently get stuck and do not touch the mug to charge it. Ember is aware of this faulty design and is still selling the Mugs (w/ charger) then denying any assistance if the pins get stuck after the Warranty is over. Good luck getting help in Warranty as well... There are articles all over the internet, on Amazon, as well as TH-cam videos identifying the issue and suggesting home "fixes" for the stuck pins. As if a home fix of a charger is advisable... It is disturbing that Ember is knowingly selling faulty the charger and denying replacements for chargers with the faulty pins. Seems like a lot of folks may have the same issue who may want their money back and the company to stop its practices. A good lawyer would do well with this one.
the common theme is that customer service for ember is useless and bad. thats why im trying to find a brand that cares about customers. esp for the cost!
I also have a Smart Mug 2 and am not happy with it. The mug is constantly intermittent and then it stops heating. My coffee keeps getting cold anyway. The support team only responds with standard emails and doesn't address my problems at all. Simply a brutally overpriced product that only works moderately.
I'm Canadian but lived in the States for 9 years and often got teased about my "Canadian Accent." This of course made me self conscious as I had no idea what my American friends were talking about. But listening to you, it sounds like you've got it as well. Are you Canadian?
NextMug is from China. If you can make a self heating battery powered mug for less than $15 cost (to actually have any margin left selling for $50) go right ahead, haha
Great review. I did not know this was a thing and peaked my interest. OMG, the price for what it does, IMHO, is way out of line with he tech involved. They are simply overpriced by about 80%. Second, definitely an extreme gimmick luxury. Cool, but a bit unnecessary (the mug) given the size and average time to drink. Maybe it's great for folks who drink very, very, very slowly. Great review, nonetheless.
Aesthetics are completely subjective. Also interesting to note that dual wall glasses do nothing to maintain drink temperature. I have a whole video on this.
Wait a minute.. what's wrong with mugs now?! They gotta be EV's to save the environment?! You need an app for your coffee?! People, come on, GET YOUR SH*T TOGETHER. Take a pill or smoke some weed! 🤦♂️
Fair enough! You can find cheap exact knockoffs of almost any product out there. That one is pretty brazen. I'd be curious to try it out to see how the build quality and performance compare!
@@LifestyleLab_ That was my main point. I have no doubt the Ember Mug is higher quality, and I would not trust the Ion mug or others to be as reliable (guessing only), but four times the cost is paying for more than some quality parts and design, its a lot of marketing you are paying for as well.
If you watch my initial review of the Ember, my first impressions were the same… until I started using it. I’ve given these to each of my parents and girlfriend, and they’re “the best present they’ve ever gotten”
People who like their drinks hot/warm. It's totally worth it for me. I drink coffee while working so, I take an hour to sip it, by the time I'm done, with a regular mug the coffee is cold.
It's absolutely a luxury purchase, but it's pretty damn amazing if you like hot tea or coffee. I previously had the same mindset, since you could easily buy a Zojirushi or Yeti for much cheaper and it'll technically last hot longer than a Ember or NextMugs battery life. However for people that enjoy their hot drinks, there's a sweet spot temperature where it's incredibly enjoyable to be just hot enough to require us to sip on but not enough burn your mouth. That's where these come into play. I'm sure to you it sounds very snobbish, but for me, having my coffee or tea be "perfect" consistently over the course of an hour or two (even indefinitely longer on the charging coaster) is very enjoyable.
I got one... I hate cold coffee (or coffee below my perfect drinking temp) and I have two small children... Which means a lot of forgotten hard worked for brewed espresso shots... So yes... The world has gone mad, but I completely understand why🥸

I'd like to add I've had 2 and they both exhibit this after 1.2 yrs
Mine are all fine 🤷🏻♂️
The Ember battery is about half
Not if you're comparing open mug to open mug. Yes, either will have drastically longer battery life with a lid on. That's just physics and was discussed :)
I like looks of ember travel or tumbler but like a lot people I'm sure both of these mugs are at a uncomfortable price point
The travel mug is absolutely not something I recommend for reasons mentioned in that review. However the basic mugs are fantastic
I've purchase two ember mugs and one ember travel mug at different times and all stopped charging after a year. If you are ok with paying to get a year's worth of use, then enjoy! They worked well until they didn't.
I'm going to be making a video on this. It is indeed unacceptable that Ember haven't fixed this widely known issue after so many years
“In case you have multiple” $150 mugs just laying around your house
Don’t they stew the coffee?
Not exactly sure what you mean by stew the coffee
@@LifestyleLab_ keeping the coffee heated surely must change the flavour, like the old perculators used to do.
Re-heating yes, maintaining temperature not so much because of how little energy input is needed
@@LifestyleLab_ ok, thanks for the distinction.
No. Mine keeps it at temperature for several hours without cooking it. It simply maintains the temp,
the common theme is that customer service for ember is useless and bad. thats why im trying to find a brand that cares about customers. esp for the cost!
the app was far too temperamental for the ember
I also have a Smart Mug 2 and am not happy with it. The mug is constantly intermittent and then it stops heating. My coffee keeps getting cold anyway.
The support team only responds with standard emails and doesn't address my problems at all. Simply a brutally overpriced product that only works moderately.
Seems like you got a lemon... I haven't heard about this kind of issue before
I'll only buy one when they have a battery that will still be chargable in 10yrs
I'm Canadian but lived in the States for 9 years and often got teased about my "Canadian Accent." This of course made me self conscious as I had no idea what my American friends were talking about. But listening to you, it sounds like you've got it as well. Are you Canadian?
Yessir!
In Belgium, the next mug is €100 more expensive!
Definitely happens sometimes on Amazon in smaller markets. Definitely not the proper retail price
@@LifestyleLab_ btw little update no-one cares about: I ordered a ember mug
Edit: An ember mug*
I care about you Bert ❤️
@@LifestyleLab_Thanks❤
I drink too quickly for one of these lol
Just found your channel. Nice objective review. Thank you!
The ember is 50% more expensive here in Sweden, for whatever reason. Not even close to a good deal.
WTF, this should only cost $50 tops. Where are you at China?
NextMug is from China. If you can make a self heating battery powered mug for less than $15 cost (to actually have any margin left selling for $50) go right ahead, haha
Great review. I did not know this was a thing and peaked my interest. OMG, the price for what it does, IMHO, is way out of line with he tech involved. They are simply overpriced by about 80%. Second, definitely an extreme gimmick luxury. Cool, but a bit unnecessary (the mug) given the size and average time to drink. Maybe it's great for folks who drink very, very, very slowly. Great review, nonetheless.
The Ember app and connectivity is so awful, exponentially more so if you have multiple devices. :/
It’s odd, I’ve never had ANY issues and I have 3 mugs connected at all times. Seems very device dependent
@@LifestyleLab_ also have 3, and I just gave up. Luck of the draw, but on a Pixel I really expected reliable development.
Agreed. I have to re-pair mine from scratch every time. Fortunately, I got it dialed in the way I want it and don't have to mess with it any longer.
@@johnhoffman8465 it's nice if you never have to change anything.
Either looks nice, they are both quite ugly. If you want you keep it hot for a short period. Kinto’s double wall glassware are much nicer looking.
Aesthetics are completely subjective. Also interesting to note that dual wall glasses do nothing to maintain drink temperature. I have a whole video on this.
I just like my coffee hot. If I would ever became the type of person that fiddled over a half a degree of temperature, I would just end it all.
How dramatic of you
This is madness. If you make a cup of coffee and it goes cold its because you haven’t drunk it quick enough. solution make another cup.
$150? Where are my tea candles..
Man why are tou desrcibing it in celcius? 😂 i need farenheight
Because that’s the units the entire world uses minus one country 😂
This did not seem unbiased at all...lol. How can you do a comparison when you don't even mention the capacity of the mugs?
Can you mention which part is biased??? Was any of what I said untrue?
Capacity wasn’t mentioned as both brands offer various sizes.
Wait a minute.. what's wrong with mugs now?! They gotta be EV's to save the environment?! You need an app for your coffee?! People, come on, GET YOUR SH*T TOGETHER. Take a pill or smoke some weed! 🤦♂️
“Angry man yells at cloud”
Perfect response 🤣 @@LifestyleLab_
Stop using "price point" since you obviously don't know what it means.
Do explain
Looks like there is no need for a long video. Ember requires an app! Enough said....Get rid of it!
Everyone has deal-breakers 🤷🏻♂️
I personally hate apps too, I say it in every video, but for me setting the temp once isn't THAT big of a deal

It's doesn't get old right
Ember mug sucks, they don't work long term.
Except they do… I have three, my parents have two, my sister has one, no issues years later
When you buy an ember mug, you pay mostly for marketing.
So why are all the other battery integrated mugs not half the price to undercut them? 🤔
@@LifestyleLab_ The Ion mug is $35.
Who in their right mind spends this much on a cup ffs
If you watch my initial review of the Ember, my first impressions were the same… until I started using it.
I’ve given these to each of my parents and girlfriend, and they’re “the best present they’ve ever gotten”
People who like their drinks hot/warm. It's totally worth it for me. I drink coffee while working so, I take an hour to sip it, by the time I'm done, with a regular mug the coffee is cold.
It's literally changed my enjoyment of coffee to a whole other level. I got it on sale, use it 2-3 times per day every single day.
Ya I wouldn't buy it for myself but it's a good gift.
Lmao 150 euros for a mug that heats the drink, 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Dear God!! over a hundred pound sfor a mug !!!! (and thats the cheaper one !! ) the worlds gone mad 😂😂
I got one... I hate cold coffee (or coffee below my perfect drinking temp) and I have two small children... Which means a lot of forgotten hard worked for brewed espresso shots... So yes... The world has gone mad, but I completely understand why🥸
I drink my coffee too fast I suppose . but hey, if it works for you then its not too expensive @@RVanton35
Calm down Gramps 😂
🤣🤣🤣🤣Gramps ?? 🤣🤣🤣 no mate . just someone who doesnt need a 130 pound mug to keep his coffee warm !! but you fill your boots sucker 🤣🤣@@gobgobcachoo
If a mug has tech in it to keep it at the exact temp you want…off course it’s going to be expensive. It’s not just a mug anymore.
why tf are you using celsius . canadian i assume?
Literally any other country than the USA.
