Interesting is that the transformation sequence has an Onmyouji theme but the Magical Girl form is your traditional magical girl frilly sailor uniform. They even write the kanji of their color like Mojikara.
I assume that's because the main designs existed long before they decided on the themes (I mean, they were first used for a Murakami exhibit teaser PV in 2010 and a cosmetics ad with a Hatsune Miku song a few years later). By contrast, the historical Princesses from the flashback have a wild variety of suits, from shrine maiden and Buddhist monk to pirate and ninja. The Shinkenger parallel is fun, yeah, this might be yet another pop culture reference out of dozens in this show. Or maybe just a coincidence.
Those kanji are actually the virtues of bushido. In order they were compassion, righteousness, politeness, (I couldn’t read what the purple one was actually), sincerity (though it used the kanji for trust), and loyalty.

I like the fact that the three girls in the beginning looked different compared to their pre-transformed states. (Especially the one with the glasses.) Then it makes more sense when nobody can figure out who these magical girls actually are.
They really pushed magical girl transformations imo, amazing sequence and music, each a unique beat and movements and a traditional twist rarely seen, and the tattoos which I love. Have to agree with previous comments though wish the outfits had more traditional twist and been more unique to each character's personality!
This animation was created by an indie animation studio. This is incredible amazing, better than a lot of big studios out there. I hope they are still working on the series.😊
They sort of are still working on it, but on radio silence again for most of this year, so here's to hoping. Also, while they're not a part of the anime industry at large, they're very much professional, just mostly working on other Murakami-affiliated projects that actually bring in the cash, unlike 6HP, - so "indie", while not technically incorrect, is really underselling their capabilities.

@@teruohirai4692 I'm thinking this is hypothetical because this is completely untrue. There are plenty of dark skinned people who live in Japan some of which are Japanese themselves. Not just mixed or foreign people. This isn't to say it's common but it's not something that's as rare as you make it out to be. Regardless, seeing a darker skinned character is like finding a needle in a haystack when it comes to anime. There's nothing wrong with being excited about it. I think the best comparison I could come up with would be if a TV show mentions the state/city/county you're from. It's exciting because *you're* from there. It's pleasant to see something that is related in some way to you.
The first six episodes have fansubs and the seventh will have fansubs within a week hopefully (unless there are unexpected circumstances). So far there aren't any more episodes.
I loooove that I found this! It's such a cool transformation and there's really a difference between their transformation! The part I love is probably the force when they click their heels. That and when the strength dynamic is shown. It's cute, graceful, smooth but delivers power at the same time.

If you're after that go the Precure route indeed. This series isn't about suffering, but it's not at all happy-go-lucky either, at least when it comes to the desolate setting and the war flashbacks.
there are a lot of magical girl anime and manga that arent just "omg suffering and shock value" while still being enjoyable, they're just overshadowed by edgy madoka clones that unfairly steal the spotlight precure, while made for children, is great for a wholesome positive show while still having badass and emotional moments, for that i would recommend the original futari wa precure and heartcatch precure (i cried at least five times watching it, maybe im just sensitive but the emotional moments hit HARD in precure) some other series that i really enjoy are "i messed up and made the wrong person into a magical girl" an action comedy manga about a mascot accidentally choosing a hardcore delinquent as a magical girl another one is "magical destroyers" a show about otaku culture with really bizarre animation and visuals while still being funny as shit imo and retaining the classic magical girl charm there was another more mature manga about magical girls who save people from committing suicide, but i've forgotten the name of it which is a shame cause it seemed REALLY good edit: its literally just called "suicide girl" lmao

Example are the Hayato tribe that came from Kyushu or people from Okinawa. There are theories that they are Austronesian-descent that came to Japan before 7th century because they mostly lived in Southern Japan. You can see a lot of manga and anime depicted dark-skinned people. Unless otherwise stated, most of the time, they are Japanese from Southern Japan. An example is Koito from Golden Kamuy.

Way better than pretty cure, keeping it simple…I do wish we could get more original compact/transformation devices than these consistent dramatic frufru compacts. Sailor Moon just had a better approach to transformations for me. Looking forward to this!
The overall art direction and backgrounds are more interesting than in Precure, but the transformation animation itself, while great, in my opinion definitely isn't more spectacular than, say, Precure transformations by Nishiki Itaoka (Cure Milky, Gelato, Twinkle, Ruby Style, Amour/Macherie, etc).

Black Princess doesn't really have a proper transformation scene yet. As for White Princess, assuming that would be the name of the Princess with the Kou (filial piety) sphere, we don't know who that would even be in the present. The historical Princess with that sphere, Fuyuse, never transformed on screen.

Way better than pretty cure, keeping it simple…I do wish we could get more original compact/transformation devices than these consistent dramatic frufru compacts. Sailor Moon just had a better approach to transformations for me. Looking forward to this!

The overall art direction and backgrounds are more interesting than in Precure, but the transformation animation itself, while great, in my opinion definitely isn't more spectacular than, say, Precure transformations by Nishiki Itaoka (Cure Milky, Gelato, Twinkle, Ruby Style, Amour/Macherie, etc).

Black Princess doesn't really have a proper transformation scene yet.
As for White Princess, assuming that would be the name of the Princess with the Kou (filial piety) sphere, we don't know who that would even be in the present. The historical Princess with that sphere, Fuyuse, never transformed on screen.

Dunno, the zoom in and slow pan to a detailed belly button feels pretty intentional, they know what they are doing.
They chose that the girls would be showed feeling extreme pleasure when the thing enter their chest, strong pleasure is associated with perverted stuff that can't be helped, they're not unaware of that.
Though true, fan service to questionnable things is nothing new, like them all having extra short skirts, just that person wasn't making things up.
