This. So much this. There were times where there was a movie I was thinking of for the spot would show up early and I'd get momentarily mad and think, "BUT, MY MOVIE HAS FOUR KINGS!" and then they'd get to their pick and I'd nod my head and go, "All right, four Aces beats four Kings".

See this, like all their other videos, is why Cinefix are the kings of Top 10 list.
They don't just give an arbitrary 10 ten items based on opinion; they give a thoughtful essay of the strength and weaknesses of the subject matter, splitting each entry into their own category and listing the best of the best in each; each numbered spot surrounded by tons of honorable mentions so you not only get an idea, through example, of what this category entails, but why the numbered movie is the epitome of the class; where the ranking means just about nothing, but provides powerful context, which creates the feeling that the #10 movie is just as important and impactful as #1 or any inbetween.
(Also I'm very happy they finally covered animated films especially)

@@HermanFalckHow I didn't say it was the best movie, did I? You're probably not familiar with the format of this show. They have a list of categories and they give mentions to different movies they like for examples, then they list their favorite pick for that category. To repeat my comment, I wish it would be a mention in this category. That is my opinion. Treasure Planet did a lot of groundbreaking things with their animation and created an amazing atmosphere in the movie (an aspect that they specifically referenced in the video for an example of great visual story telling in animation)., and I feel like that is not appreciated enough. When it comes to the sci-fi category, I absolutely agree that Akira should be the favorite, but (to repeat my comment again because you didn't read it correctly) I wish Treasure Planet got a mention when discussing sci-fi animation movies. I mean, they gave Titan A.E a nod, which came out around similar times, so I feel that Treasure Planet could easily fit in with that and the others listed.

I remember watching Rango in the theater. I had a smile on my face the entire time. The way they filmed Rango was emotion capture. The actors were in costume on a stage performing together and the animators would use film of their performance for reference. Sometimes matching up motion in the video to the 3D characters skeleton in almost a rotoscoping fashion. Industrial Light & Magic exceeded standard motion capture, to make this one feel like a stage performance inside a 3D animated movie.

This alone doesnt make it a great film but the gorgeous and painstaking subtle animation and detail provided by Kyoto Animation. Sadly, on July 19, 2019, an attack was made on one of the studios building killing ultimately 37 people and injuring 36 more- the greatest lose of life in Japan, barring natural disasters, since WW2. Many of those who worked on a Silent Voice are no longer with us. I would like to see Cinefix, and others in general, to address what is possibly the worst attack on a movie studio in history.

@@marcsoren7 here’s my review and feel free to tell me what you think:
“The positives? I admired the core sentiments, and it’s heart generally being in the right place. There are also admittedly, in usual Don Hertzfeldt fashion, creatively simplistic, erratic uses of visuals and sound to convey information effectively, even if, when paired with this movie’s central thematic concerns, it did so in ways that made most of the onslaught of monotone narration feel exhausting and superfluous.
It’s clear to me that there’s a short film in here somewhere with a lot more poignancy and charm, and a lot more to actually meaningfully express about anything. Imaginative yes, but an imaginatively insufferable mishmash of arbitrary concepts that feels like a total surface level construction, an empty manipulation in which all the effort has been spent trying to stuff as much that appears as complex or weighty as possible into a single hour.
You might counter with “life is random and hard to get a hold of too bruh, that’s why it’s so deep!”, but this presentation style feels entirely like a crutch for what is nothing more than someone’s self serious attempt at making a work of genius, when what’s in their head and what they’re chasing is some generic idea of what art is, rather than it being an earnest expression of what they actually feel. Another thing that felt like a crutch was the use of classical music, and notably pieces that have been used to much greater effect and far more appropriately by Terrence Malick, who isn’t solely relying on the music as a means of appearing deep or eliciting emotion as this does. If you want something animated artistically that says far more about the human condition and additionally doing so in an intelligent, subtextual and unpretentious way, then I highly recommend the works of Satoshi Kon, or films like The Red Turtle or My Life as a Zucchini over this seemingly laborious lecture of sad, simplistic, superficial stick people.”

@@gab_gallard I also love that Japanese cinema layer of it as you do, but as a movie about life, memory, nostalgia and coping with mortality I still think it hits harder on a universal level, especially if average the viewer is willing to empathise with the cultural elements they have no frame of reference for. I would’ve been less bothered if it’s such a beautiful day was placed in some other category of ‘minimalist animation’ or something, because while my opinon of it might improve in the future I don’t think it is anywhere near Kon’s work, while it certainly presents and seems to think of itself as the most profound work of genius of all time.
