Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine to become Hurricane Helene

- FOX 13 Meteorologist Jim Weber says Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine will likely become a ‘major hurricane’ before it likely makes landfall in Florida. As of 11 a.m. on Monday, Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine had winds of 30 miles an hour and was moving to the north at about six miles an hour. Weber expects Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine to be a Category 1 hurricane by 8 a.m. on Wednesday as it works its way through the Yucatan Channel. Once it earns a name, it will be called Helene. Weber says by Wednesday night there is a possibility that the Bay Area will begin feeling the storm bands. On Thursday, Weber says the winds will start to turn more toward the south and southwesterly direction as it makes landfall in the Big Bend area around 3 p.m. He encourages people to look at the forecast cone not the line in the middle because even if the storm doesn’t make landfall on the west coast of Florida, the Bay Area will still feel its impacts such as bands of rain and wind. According to Weber, the heavy bands that will work their way into the Bay Area will cause a significant storm surge and significant flooding along the coastline.

Dude - You are really downplaying this. All 4 of the hurricane models that begin to run only after a Tropical Depression is formed (ie. HAFS A & B) are ALL indicating a cat 4 or higher at landfall in the big bend of FL.

When did they start calling these tropical storms cyclones? I have never heard them called a cyclone in Florida -in the Hawaii yes,Thailand yes cyclone. Strange days are afoot
it's always been called a cyclone by meteorologists. There are different kinds of cyclones and hurricane's just one of them! In areas East of Asia it's commonly called a Typhoon!

Typhoons are what they are called in many parts of Oceania and Asia. They spin in the opposite direction due to the earth's rotation.

Storm surge will be significant. I don’t think the population along the coast is going to ride it out, but they will likely be under mandatory evacuation along panhandle. Regarding Michael: “An estimated $27.3 billion in damages (equivalent to $57 billion in 2022) The storm claimed the lives of 65 people in Southern Florida. More than 63,500 homes were destroyed.”

Why is the cone so tucked into Tampa area west coast but spaghetti models hardly go there. ?
They always do this mostly because they don't know exactly where it's going so they are covering their bases if it turns into Tampa at the last minute.

The bigger and glaring question is...Why do we even allow the hurricane season to last until November? It should only be until August 31st, and any others that try to get in after that would be refused to make landfall and have to find somewhere else to land because we would be closed for the season, Duh!! 🤔

The safest place to be is in the first release of the cone of uncertainty prediction. I've never seen a storm stay within the initial projected cone. If you're to the left or right of that initial cone be on alert.
Stay safe and watch for the Waffle House to close.
