Not sure how to say this without being "preachy" ... BUT ... Have had a Hudson Bay reproduction fire kit for over 30 years and always keep a thin piece of leather between the lens (on the inside obviously ) and any metal striker or stone material . Ammonia will age brass very quickly ... as will simply handling brass / bronze material . Thanks for your video !!

I will be getting one soon and a new striker & wanted to know more about using ammonia for aging brass . Do you apply ammonia to the brass with cloth ? Is a Hudson bay kit a good thing and would char cloth next to the magnifier lense be ok ? THX
@Nav Star - The Hudson Bay fire tin is historically accurate and works very well to this day . There used to be a version made which did not have the magnifier glass which is the older and 2 originals are in my collection . I keep a thin piece of buckskin between the glass and contents . Char cloth (carbon cloth) by its' very nature is abrasive and can scratch glass . If you read that article , you will understand my preferred striker is made from an old sword blade and too large for the Hudson tin . It is a small knife as well as a striker and stays in an elk skin pouch with charred material and chert / flint . Use Cimbrers method whether you use vinegar or ammonia . Brass will age the more you use it and handle it . The sweat and salt from your hands - fruit acids - animal oils ... etc. ATB
I bought a Cooper tin and it was shinier than a new penny, after about 3 months of carrying it in my pack it has a nice tarnished look to it maybe copper forms a patina easier than brass, great video.

Very informative. It's interesting how many things vinegar can do, it's vapor can give a patina and it can be used to remove tarnish or patina. I use it in my laundry and use a capful in the dryer to help fight musty clothes in my humid environment
Well. Looks like I have I new use for the donut package on my counter. Don't need a platform, since the raised parts between the donuts will do that. I'm trying to age the rivets on a broken antique handmade slicing knife that I've reshaped and reprofiled into a belt knife. I've been using vinegar-soaked newspaper and recently decided to try a rag. Don't know how the rag is going to go, but everything I've tried so far has been extremely inconsistent and impossible to control. These methods work great for putting a patina on the blade (especially the newspaper), but for brass, it just doesn't work. Some of them get extremely harsh colors, some barely change at all. Some cover the whole rivet, some only cover part of it. Some are flat and natural, others are ugly and artificial. *Thank you,* this is very simple and easy to do. After I see what the rag does, I will sand the handle down _(again)_ and try this. This should also stop the whole place from smelling like vinegar, and stop me from wasting so much of it. I'm curious to see what it will do to the steel, so I won't oil the blade.

Always fine salt at perhaps a couple of tee spoons to about 3 dl vinegar. And have patience ( I’m sure you have that … since you have experimented so much) Please let me know how it turns out. More easily controlled and less extreme results, but I guess getting the same kind of results on those tiny little rivets isn't going to happen. It worked well at first, but now I can barely get a reaction after 12 hours, even after removing the patina and trying to start over. Maybe it's too polished, maybe it needs a stronger degreaser than soap, maybe I used the wrong amount of salt, or maybe it needs to be parallel to the vinegar. I honestly have no idea, but now that I've realized that I'm not going to get the finish on the handle that I wanted, I guess I can just let them form a patina on their own if I have to. There is apparently an ammonia method, and I might try that, but I have reservations about trying it in such a small apartment. I'll keep trying in the meantime. The results on the steel have actually been very interesting, though. Seems to be a _very_ good way to patina steel. The problem is I don't want to make the blade any darker, so I need to find a way to isolate it. Oil didn't work, so I guess I'll have to try some kind of grease.

Hmmm not so easy 🤔 If I was you I would polish it so all the finger prints disappear and then wash it in hot water and dish soap 👍🏻😉 … and then handle it with plastic gloves and follow my instructions. Good job fella you can also use horse-radish and just smear it over and it gives a really good patina i use it on bushcraft knife coz they are carbon and patina stops them rusting.stay safe,Ray.
clever trick ... i have put patina on a knife blade, by putting it in boiling vingear and it turned the blade blue/grey, next time i have something in brass i will have to try this,
Tried this method with the brass item in a dry open container within a sealed container containing the salt and vinegar. Colour hardly changed after 1.5 days?
Yeah heard that before Frank 🤔 and it’s usually because there’s some kind of coating on the brass that you have to remove first.… or the item are not solid brass … just a thin layer … hope this will help 😊👍🏻 Tom
Various items - for example, solid cast vintage brass centre door pull, different Arts & Crafts vintage brass door knocker etc, all very cleaned (truly raw), but same outcome.
Hmmm well if you have cleared it for all sorts of varnish and finger grease … I don’t know what’s the reason is that you can’t do it 😏 try to put more salt in … that sometimes helps Tom

Oh bro... My grandparents were old generation. I used to help them polish the brass and it's work. You don't need to patina it, just leave it laying around and it will get there.
@@acdyman Worked quite well! Just be sure to not spill any on the metal platform or it'll end up uneven. What gave me the best result was to first dull it, and then give it a polish in the areas of my choosing.

Man oh man . . . I'm having a difficult time with this particular video. I spend 10 years in the U.S. Navy and they ingrained in us the idea that anything brass had to be kept polished to a mirror-like finish. Now its been over 40 years since my time in the service, but old ideas die hard. I even polished my Trangia meth burner when I got it! Crazy, huh? So we may have to agree to disagree on this one. :-)

I heard that it is smart to do a patina on carbon steel knives, to fight rust . Is this true and is it the same process? Thanks for the video..

clever trick ... i have put patina on a knife blade,
by putting it in boiling vingear and it turned the blade blue/grey,
next time i have something in brass i will have to try this,

Tried this method with the brass item in a dry open container within a sealed container containing the salt and vinegar. Colour hardly changed after 1.5 days?
Yeah heard that before Frank 🤔 and it’s usually because there’s some kind of coating on the brass that you have to remove first.… or the item are not solid brass … just a thin layer … hope this will help 😊👍🏻

Various items - for example, solid cast vintage brass centre door pull, different Arts & Crafts vintage brass door knocker etc, all very cleaned (truly raw), but same outcome.
Hmmm well if you have cleared it for all sorts of varnish and finger grease … I don’t know what’s the reason is that you can’t do it 😏 try to put more salt in … that sometimes helps

How can I clean the brass if I’ve already touched it?
Just wash it with the same that you use for your dishes 😉👍🏻 and rinse in hot water … just so the grease from your fingers are removed 👌🏻😊🏕🔥🌲 Tom

Oh bro... My grandparents were old generation. I used to help them polish the brass and it's work. You don't need to patina it, just leave it laying around and it will get there.
Yeah that’s right 😉👍🏻 but it takes a looooong time 😆 and I want it to look old asap 😊

@@acdyman Worked quite well! Just be sure to not spill any on the metal platform or it'll end up uneven. What gave me the best result was to first dull it, and then give it a polish in the areas of my choosing.

Man oh man . . . I'm having a difficult time with this particular video. I spend 10 years in the U.S. Navy and they ingrained in us the idea that anything brass had to be kept polished to a mirror-like finish. Now its been over 40 years since my time in the service, but old ideas die hard. I even polished my Trangia meth burner when I got it! Crazy, huh? So we may have to agree to disagree on this one. :-)
