RIP Spice the dog. 19/03/05 to 26/11/18 . Yesterday we said goodbye to our amazing Springer Spaniel Spice. She died peacefully after a whole series of illnesses including liver cancer and Cushings disease. The vet told us at the beginning of the summer of 2017 she would only survive a few months but being a springer with their indomitable spirit and boundless energy she hung on for over a year and a half surrounded by a loving family and community. When she couldn’t go for her walks we took her down the pub where she was spoilt rotten by the locals. But the last few weeks have been very tough. Barely able to walk and eat it was time to say goodbye. We are all heart broken. She came down to Dorset with us as a puppy from London and had the most amazing life here in the beautiful English wilderness of West Dorset. She kept me fit and active and whenever I got stressed she’d come over and give me one of those Springer Spaniel ‘what you need is a good long walk’ looks . And we’d be off walking the land with her running free on top of Pilsdon Pen on a clear spring morning with the sky larks circling above and that amazing view over Marshwood vale and the coast beyond stretching for miles. She was my muse, best friend and soul companion. I wrote this Imagined Village track for her.
That moment when the song of a skylark becomes the lead instrument is sublime. And the view from the top of Pilsdon Pen is the second best view in England. (After the view from the terrace at Chartwell - hey, I'm a Kentish lad of COURSE I'm going to plug my home county!).
