Just to clear up the Chilean issue: Friedman was never an adviser to Pinochet, nor did he speak in his defense. He was brought to Chile to speak at universities by his U of Chicago colleague Arnold Harberger, who ran the program at Chicago that trained South American grad students. While he was there, Pinochet requested a meeting with Friedman to discuss the terrible inflation still raging in Chile, a problem left over from the Allende regime. Along with a lot of other horror stories bequeathed to Chile by the Marxist Salvador Allende.
Chileans themselves overthrew Allende because of his commitment to establishing a Castroite dictatorship in Chile. The entire country was on strike against Allende in 1973 (who had won a three way election in 1970 with about 36% of the popular vote). Allende was giving interviews to reporters saying there would be no Presidential election in 1976, he was proposing abolishing the Chilean legislature, to be replaced by a Soviet style Politburo, there were thousands of paramilitary forces ensconced in Chile who'd been trained by Cuba. The choices for Chile were between 'a rock and a hard place'. Eventually, Chile got a democracy, but they had to fight for it. That had nothing to do with Milton Friedman's advice on how to end inflation in the country.

“Chileans themselves overthrew Allende”. Holy shit, any thought on the “Kissinger Memo” ? Like when the Iranian populist movement brought back the Shah ? It’s theories, simplified to this level, that has always discredited Friedman & Chicago. Like Rational Choice.

@@MrOliverwoods "The Kissinger Memo"? He wrote thousands of memos which one, specificially?
Any thoughts on what Allende told Georgie Anne Geyer about there not being an election in 1976, because things would be entirely different then?

@@patricksullivan4329 it’s the memo that comes up when you google “Allende/Kissinger/memo” I’m sure you know the history of Kissinger and the CIA stabilizing of Allende’s elected presidency and the ruining of their economy. It’s all de-classified and in the open.
