    Disabling a beautiful multi-zone hydronic system, with a good Burnham cast iron boiler, to now rely on a goofy geothermal system, and electric baseboard units in a far northeastern state? Let’s see how warm the house is when it’s been -15F for a week. Then just wait until that geothermal heat stops on a Sunday in subzero temperatures, and nobody has parts to repair it immediately.

    Company I have used for over 30 years at work had guy named Earl that was a mechanical savant. When Earl showed up it was because other guys needed technical help. Earl would walk in and look at something for 3 minutes an go, Here's your problem. He could be frustrating because he could be 5 min from finishing but it was 11:59 and it was lunch time. Take off for an hour. He owned a bowling ally and had it set up for geo. His heating and cooling bills were almost non existent. He passed a couple years back. Odd duck but friendly and so smart. Geothermal? $60,000?!?!?! That’s insanity!!!! I can add on to my house for that or build a nice garage! I’d probably go with radiant floor heat if I lived up north. I learned recently and thought it was interesting - a properly made masonry heater with all the channels in it burning wood is the most efficient heater on the planet if you really wanna be green. Small fire then it radiates heat all day long! But, no one looks at the facts. A masonry heater burns wood which has the least amount of total energy in it from start to finish compared to the other fuels. But, they still push heat pumps because the left’s ultimate goal is to make everyone poor and not own anything so they can have more control.

    We need to know how much power cost over there. How much is it per kWh to buy power from the utility? Natural gas...per BTU or CuFt or is it available? Oil cost? I can't imagine a solar system being much of a choice in the forest areas, mountain cabins etc. What are people thinking? All of this is old news, decades ago they determined which heating system was best for the residence. I guess some folks failed to graduate high school. Solar or Geothermal systems are not free so the cost to install those applies big time to the total cost/savings details.

      And if they're looking for environmentally friendly, they can run B100 biodiesel, there are companies that deliver it in MA. My mother's house uses B100 for heat, it burns clean and doesn't leave soot. It costs less than #2 oil. No modifications required to run it in an oil burner, just fill the oil tank and that's it.

  • @SpecialistOne
    @SpecialistOne 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Some times it feels like we just need a change, and don't want to put up with Oil and its hassle, smell, and worrying about tank leaks. But anything Geo sounds expensive, and has a lot of up front cost. I don't have any experience with Geo and don't know anyone that has it to see if it can heat a house in severe MA weather. We do live in a pretty cold climate here in winter. At times we sometimes have a few days of near 0 oF, and often with windchill that is below 0 oF. Thank God that is only sometimes it is very severe and not all the time. Anyhow, our Oil heat has done a great job for us for over three decades. If we had natural gas, I would have converted to natural gas even though it may have other issues, just to get rid of the Oil tank and Oil hassle we have been dealing with over the years. Another option around us has been palette stoves. Our friend has it, but it is always too hot in their house, and every few days they shut it down and clean it. And let's not talk about storing palette bags, and keep filling the palette stove. With our Oil Boiler, if we need extra heat we just turn up the thermostat. We pay for it, but it works.

    • @theodorgiosan2570
      @theodorgiosan2570 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Have you considered using biofuel, B100? It doesn't require any modifications to run in your system, just get it delivered and fill the tank. Doesn't smell, burns clean. For the tank get a Roth tank put in, it's double walled and contains leaks.

    Electric heat still has major deficiencies in cold weather. Down south where i live, we are experiencing the occasional single digit temperatures, along with snow, some areas just freezing rain, that we see just a few times a winter. And the power companies are already talking about stress on the grid. Because half of our heating down here is by heat pump, and in order for it to keep up, everyone is having to run the AUX electric resistance heat on top of it longer.

    • @Mr.T314

    • @portraitofman2063
      @portraitofman2063 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Those heat strips typically pull 3.5-5 kw each too. An average heater pack with two strips is pulling 20 amps while it’s running. You could set up an entire 2 stage furnace oil or gas and run it on 20 amps(sometimes 15) and actually get reliable and quick heat year-round as opposed to the struggles a heat pump with heat strips creates in cold weather. You just can’t beat combustion for that fast and toasty heat.

So I bought a 10 thousand pound soapstone mass heater from Canada installed it in March. Now I call the boiler Stone Cold. And the heater the Big Hot Rock. One fire a day 50 lbs of wood burns up I one hour and the place is toasty.
