  • For decades after its accession to the WTO, China got rich, and the average Chinese citizen became accustomed to a certain rise in living standards. Now, with Xi Jinping undermining the most innovative parts of China’s private economy and further centralizing power, China’s economy is stalling. Hudson Institute Senior Fellow Thomas Duesterberg joins host Peter Rough to discuss his new report on China’s economic weakness and how the U.S. should respond.

The most compelling testament to an economist’s credibility is the accuracy of their historical analyses and forecasts. These individuals were present during pivotal economic periods, such as the stimulus era under the Bush and Obama administrations, and Biden’s COVID-19 stimulus measures. They also witnessed the era of American unipolarity. Despite their proximity to these significant events, they failed to foresee the impending crises precipitated by these perilous government policies. This oversight calls into question their ability to accurately interpret and predict the consequences of economic policy decisions.

One big irony of economic fails in china, was that when we had our crash of 2008. China used their complete political control to go their own way and not take the hit caused by our collapse. However they just just doubled down on their investment model. Somehow unaware of their declining demographics they just kept relying on housing, particularly land lease sales to fund their local govts and stimulate their economy. After over building enough to house a few hundred million empty units, they finally realized their population was in decline and they economic pump of moving from the country to city was ending. It just turns out that they really are communist at heart, and they
just don't invest with consideration for the need to make a profit. Now they have this situation where there are just no strong holders
to bail out the weak. I suspect a lot of the money is in the hands of the ccp members in paper with no accountability.
The whole system is based on the manager (ccp member ) getting his cut and most the profits were being generated by housing, or exploiting the new labor from the countryside. Now that housing is in the dumpster, they are going to have to work very hard to keep the economy from shrinking, as the local governments just can't sell enough land leases to keep going.
the national govt has to chose between keeping the local govts afloat or downsizing the military. I suspect soldier will end up with the salaries and the locals will lose the work.

A lot of what you say is true. But you missed one item that I've seen mentioned by economists...China was/is the world's largest creditor nation, while the U.S. was/is the world's largest debtor nation. Since China was not a debtor nation, the effect of debt defaults didn't really affect them. To a lesser degree, that was also the case with Russia.

    • @taco7043
      @taco7043 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

lol creditor debtor nations. US has the world's reserve currency. It's not a creditor debtor relationship, it's who has the reserve currency and who's dependent on importing food oil. China is extremely dependent on exports to earn the dollars needed to buy commodities. Brazil and Argentina only accept dollars. But I do agree that China is like Russia in that the moment they make a move on Taiwan the US can freeze all the money like they did with Russia.

At the end of the day, if the lot of the Chinese are considerably better like alleviating its people from poverty, that matters to the Chinese. Strangely enough, in the process, it raised the standard of living of the average American due to goods they couldn’t afford in the past and created many more millionaires and billionaires, in China and the US. It is in the difference which this created wealth which has be distributed to the Chinese and American populations that matters. In the US, the increase in wealth went mainly to the smaller richest section of the community, with the progressive loss of employment of the lower class. In China, the advent of work generated a higher standard of living to millions of peasants and Chinese facilitators who enabled the transfer of work to China became rich as well.
This shift in generating income was accelerated by IP theft as well as Chinese innovations, and expansion of Chinese manufactured goods into the rest of the world, resulting within 30 years
when China’s GDP rose from 11% to 74%. The most telling deteriorations to the US was not only the increase of unemployment, but that the Standard of Living of the lower income people, remained stagnant for 30 years, with a near commensurate increase of wealth to the rich. The channeling of funds for R&D also shifted to where the operation was, depriving personnel who
traditionally were from the US. This has enormous impact on the future growth and security of
old and new businesses in the US, especially in Technology.
The US deployed the strategy of tariffs to reduce the trade imbalance with China. This had proven to be unsuccessful. In the area of Technology, sanctions and inaccessibility to US products like chips and cutting edge technology processes, have only stalled China’s growth temporarily, forcing China to increase investment of alternatives. In the longer term, US
companies which used to sell 60% or more of its production to China become unviable due to the permanent loss of the Chinese market. The implementation of 5G in the US and it’s Allies who decided to collectively sanction Huawei technology, have sustained financial losses as well as disruption by the dismantling of existing Huawei equipment without a clear view of new 5G installation.

Americans register as organ donors at a rate 103 times greater than the rate that people in China register. In terms of giving to charitable causes, the US has long ranked as either number one in the world or as within the top three nations. In contrast, China has long ranked within the bottom five nations, sometimes as the very bottom-most, the stingiest in the world. Nor is that difference in charitable giving due to China's lower wealth. Kenya was recently ranked number one in charitable giving so the rankings must be based on percentage of income or GDP donated not on absolute amount donated. My larger point is that, as nations go, China (especially under the CCP) is profoundly selfish, selfish to the point of criminality. It will never live up to an agreement; it will never not cheat. Unless forced. Why is it that the US has, for so long and right up through today, reacted so feebly to China's numerous forms of cheating, unfair competition, and misappropriation?! Why on earth do we still classify China as "most favored nation"? What is the psychology there? Why do we Americans just sit and watch China plunder us and the world?

Your post covers a lot of things. I’ll just mention that philanthropy outside a person’s family is not part of their culture. Giving very generously within the family is though. Also, traditionally, organ donation is seen as a desecration of the body. These are cultural differences and we in the west paint them too easily from our point of view. Having said that, I agree that they themselves would be better off if they were to develop these habits themselves.

The main thing that these so called experts forget is that economy and pretty everything else is under the management of reasonably competent people vs vested interest of the mega wealthy n political insults n fighting.
China has always done well under a centralised government system.
The reason for the BRI is to trade and spread risk of dependency of America.
BRI is aimed at securing its resources it does have!! This brings a win win situation for all countries involved.
The art of war applied in economics of a country.

This talk proves and reinforces the awareness that I have in recent years, when listening to Western experts on China, how wrong, how misinformed, how misguided they are when talking about China, Chinese people, culture, tradition, Chinese history, Chinese values.
If one is open minded enough to see and evaluate what can be seen physically as far as China’s successes in managing the huge economy and population, the successful implementations of projects to provide food, energy, and transportation to enhance the speed of connectivity nationwide wherein the Wests and no other country can truly match, one can see that the gap between China and the rest of the world is growing wider: China will be far ahead despite all its growing pains.
The Wests in particular these 2 “experts “ will wake up feeling dumbfounded one day of how they could have got the while China thing so wrong.

I like China too and I also agree these "China watchers" are full of shit. However, you are WAY off base. China does not innovate at all and they don't invest in education. Chinese civil society is essentially non-existent; about the only thing they'll get behind is protecting the value of their real estate. China copies from the West what it can understand and value. This critically does not include preventing the concentration of political authority. China is a well-organized, hard-working, single-minded mimic; it is currently doing nothing to ever be capable of anything more. This is probably for the best since with no civil society to speak of, and weak political structure; anything novel would likely be disastrous. China looks to be topping out at around 1/4th the productivity of the West, but that too is only an illusion. It requires that you ignore the fact that what built modern China was access to Western markets. China has a disastrous demographic problem created by China's one-child policy. China has built a blue water navy with no experience and, as stated above, no innovation. And it's doing this despite it's access to foreign markets having be secured by the U.S. for the entirety of China's rise. One can only conclude China intends to engage in actions that are likely to result in a loss of US partnership. This is obviously a result of China's political problem. In Summary, for a variety of reasons; China will not even be capable of sustaining 1/4 the success of the West.

The infrastructure in China doesn't appear underused to me. I have been all over china in the last 7 years. The high speed trains are packed. The roads are packed. The big freeways from province to province have lots of traffic. The massive new airports are packed. Chinese airlines are buying large amounts of new airplanes. China is the largest exporter of automobiles in the world now. The contraction of the economy - to still respectable growth it should be noted - was all expected as they attempt to shift to an internal goods and services economy as we have in the United States. I don't agree with this assessment. This is a hawkish cry to engage in economic warfare against China. Nothing more. The whole argument is "they are weak and this is a great time to kick them." I don't think their economy is in the trash. That would be a grave mistake of perception. This seems like a recipe that will only end in war. This is just recycling the theme that forced Japan into a war that they didn't even want with us. None of these people were privy to what happened in the meeting between Xi and Biden and their advisors. Its a huge mistake to be confrontational. This gentleman doesn't speak a word of Chinese, and he knows nothing about the culture and the way they do things. Do a search for the honorable Kevin Rudd and listen to what he says about how the Chinese do things. You will hear a different take on how to interact with China. The Swift system is not the only game in town for currency conversion. Taking the Russians out of it didn't do a thing to their economy. He is either ignorant or he is purposely misstating the situation. Lots of banks don't even use the SWIFT system. In the end he makes it clear. He wants us to engage in economic warfare against China with the vague hope of provoking a regime change. This is just the same Project for a New American Century philosophy that got us into 20 years of war in Iraq ( lets recall that this was under false pretenses about weapons of mass destruction ) and Afghanistan. And they were not peer opponents. If there is a conflict with China its going to look a lot more like the scale of Pearl Harbor in terms of damage to our military assets. Probably a lot worse. The whole lecture is foolish and provocative.

Most of what you said is pure conjecture or down right nonsense. You don’t know anything about the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq or about the massive military disparity between the US and China. If you want to learn how powerful the US military is then study the Gulf War or the 2003 invasion of Iraq.
And you’re clearly coping or down right clueless about China’s dire economic problems. They just started going through the worse demographic crisis in human history, and they’ve got a massive real estate bubble which is due to pop. It’ll be even worse than when Japan’s bubble popped in the late 1980’s
China’s economy is headed down the exact same road as Japan. If you knew anything about economics, you’d see the parallels between 1980’s Japan and 2020’s China. The only difference is that Japan actually got rich before it got old, China will get old before they get rich. And China’s population decline will be far worse. They’re going to lose nearly 80 million people every 10 years for the next 80 years. While their proportion of elderly pensioners keeps increasing compared to the workforce. China’s birth rate is the lowest in the world at 1.07 births/woman. Their economy will not keep up with the US over the long term since the US has a much higher birth rate and an indefinitely increasing population due to high immigration from around the world
China is full of ghost cities and unused apartment properties as well as under utilized high speed rail. This is a fact documented by the CCP’s own statistics which are sugar coated to begin with. Most people in China prefer regular speed rail over high speed rail since it costs a lot more. High speed rail, especially in such high quantity is a waste of money and doesn’t do anything positive for the economy. No high speed rail system in the world has made back the initial cost of building it. Going 2 times faster simply isn’t worth 10 times greater cost of construction. The US has by far the largest rail network in the world but the government chose not to fund high speed rail because it’s a waste of money and flying is a cheaper and much faster alternative
And being kicked out of the swift payment system won’t cripple anyone’s economy but it will cause a lot of financial and economic hurdles which coupled with all the other sanctions will cause any economy to decline or stagnate. Russia’s economy has declined a lot since 2013. They started getting sanctioned in 2014. Even now their 2023 GDP of $1.8 Trillion is far less than their 2013 GDP of $2.3 Trillion. Russia was the 8th largest economy in the world back then and now it’ll probably be out of the top 15 economies by 2030 getting surpassed by Mexico, Australia, Indonesia and others. Russia’s economy will likely continue to stagnate for decades to come. Along with the sanctions they are also facing a demographic crisis with a rapidly declining and aging population, although it’s not as bad as China’s situation

It's all about the hegemony. Why do you think America wants to the Chinese market? So it can increase its market share for its multinational companies and thus their stock market size. That means the more these companies earn, more capitals flow back to America . But this way of distributing the economic resources only benefits the few in the country, at the cost of the majority. So the proper way to address is just to give up hegemony so more money can be spent to improve the country, a more equitable distribution of of resources among the people, instead of spending all the money in country to keep up the hegemony to the benefits of the few. The hegemony mainly benefits the ultra rich in USA but it has destroyed the livelihood of the average American. The conflict is if America wants to lead the world, it needs to maintain its hegemony but if it wants to fix its own country, it needs to give up its hegemony. That's the dilemma the US is in. It's one or the other, you cannot have both. America needs to admits its politics is kidnapped by these globalist corporations they want more people to flood into America for cheap labor, they want to outsource all the manufacturing so they can keep on getting rich. Democracy vs Autocracy, free world vs dictators are just veils for the globalists to push forward their agendas. You can vote all you want, it won't change.

2 white men 'shocked' by the water quality and the environment after 40 years of China making widgets for them and their kids to use. Despite that China is doing an incredibly good job on the environmental issues, renewable energy, waterways management etc

Lots of yellow men are shocked by the water quality and environment too. How does the way people look effect the validity of their argument? Make your point without racism.

China bil n the biggest dam in the world to channel water from the rainy south to the arid north... full of pure snow water lakes, rivers and canals... not poisoned streams from Fracking on Native lands.

It is disheartening to witness our repeated display of aggression towards China. Half of the video emphasizes the extent to which their economy is suffering and the minimal prospects for its recovery. The second half focuses on strategies to eliminate any potential market competition, ensuring that they remain unable to regain stability. Merely a decade ago, we were content with China serving as Santa's workshop, paying little attention to their well-being as long as we received affordable products conveniently delivered to our doorsteps.
