Make sure to get UIM (uninsured/ underinsured) if you get hit by someone without insurance or very little insurance you are on your own otherwise.. saying this from experience
I had this happened and the Uninsured only covers medical bills. For example, if I was hurt in that accident, they would pay for the medical care. However, it does not pay for any other damages. It did not pay for the repair of the scratches on my car. Fortunately, the uninsured driver actually paid for those out of pocket.

This is good advice. Get the higher limits of liability insurance as it is a good value for what you pay. I have been in the insurance industry thirty years and have seen many hard working people regret not getting enough liability coverage.
Hi Dave, unfortunately insurance companies punish people who are debt free and have no credit scores. My parents are an example. They always get letters saying "you didn't get the best rates because of your credit score". Liability only insurance with 25/50/25 for them is $800 for 6 months here in WA state. This is insane.
I have a small insurance agency, every year we have a couple claims that get into the high 100's or even over a million and there is nothing worse than when the insurance company sends a letter saying you are about to max out your policy and walk away . Get an umbrella too even if you don't have a big net worth. If you kill someone or seriously hurt them in a accident and its your fault, these things can get into the millions, and they can and will garnish your pay. An umbrella can be as cheap as $175 a year.
That's not always the case. I can't speak about someone getting killed but I was badly injured and the guy only had 15k policy which they paid in full. Unfortunately that's nothing compared to what I went through. My lawyer said he most likely doesn't have any assets and is not worth suing because it'll take years to get any money and could cost more going after him. Now I'm researching what the best coverage is for me so I can be covered better God forbid anything happens.
Always have enough liability coverage above your net worth. Reason, if you hurt someone you want them going after your insurance company not you personally. Not saying they won't try.
@@retiredmanager510 Lawyers love insurance because its easy money. Lawyers are less likely to sue if you don't have insurance because going to court costs lots of money and getting a judgement is not easy. Then if the defendant files for bankruptcy, you'll never get a dime.
I had to sue Nationwide to get compensated for expenses related to repairing my truck after getting hit by their customer. A nationwide agent not working the claim; "they won't pay their own grandmother."
@Brian Waller I'll add to the problems. All I asked for was for the exact cost of the repairs. No injury or compensation for the hassle of getting four estimates and rental car. After 5 months and 3 court appearances finally the suit was not continued and the judge awarded the cost of repairs. Just under 4k and the nationwide attorney after losing said they would appeal. My attorney didn't include fees for his cost. Nationwide didn't appeal and mailed the check to my attorney. Upon going to pick the check up the attorney had made the check where I and he had to endorse the check and of course it was 800 bux light to supposedly to cover his fees. When I went to his office and saw what he'd done I lost it! I was seeing red after all the hassle and now this. Yelling ensued and I had to get in his face and tell his secretary to shut up. She called the police and after some colorful back and forth I left with my check in full.
My insurance agent used to work for American Family and he basically got sick of the BS and started his own company. I couldn't afford to make the switch right away because I was paying monthly and his new plans from 10 or 12 different insurance companies the best deal you get it to pay 1 full year I bought s newer car a 2016 Lincoln MKZ AWD 3.7L V6 American Family who I had been with for decades wanted almost 2 grand I switched and I saved 1200 for car insurance and renters policy to cover property if you're poor like me make sure your home owners or renters policy is replacement cost or they will depreciate the item and give you that much
My parents in a big city Suburb (Chicago) and myself in small town ND. We have always had State Farm. Not only have they always paid our claims, talking with others our rate are way less expensive than most others places. Loyalty matters. I’ve had them for over 30 years and my parents over 60 years
Sounds like Dan is getting some good advice! Independent agents can really save you money, and that tip about high liability coverage is smart. It’s true-liability is one of the cheaper parts of the policy. Plus, like Dave said, those big-name commercials aren't free, and that cost trickles down to your premiums. I've found similar savings myself-ended up going with Insurance Panda for just $25/month, which has been a great deal without all the extra costs!
I have a million dollar liability and uninsured motorist. I don’t have comprehensive. I drive cars I can afford to replace. I have lost one car (worth $5k) due to my fault. I have saved enough to buy several new cars by not covering my cars. I just bought a Tesla. I was quoted $3000/yr for full insurance package. Liability only is $1300/yr. If I skip comprehensive I will save $1700/yr. The car price was $36000. Full coverage might make sense during the next 3-4 years while the car retains some value. Once it has depreciated it will be a waist of money. It will take 21 years of savings to cover the purchase price but the car value will decline with time. I think people do not think enough about concerting to liability coverage only when their car has lost value. Best, MH
I agree with you completely. This is one of the reasons I have chosen to remain an independent insurance agent so I can offer my clients the best insurance coverage for their needs. Got offered a few captive positions in the past and I actually turned them down because I didn't want to limit the insurance I offered.

This is a topic that could use a lot more clarification and understanding. If you aren't staying on top of your auto insurance carefully, you may be getting ripped off, You can have a high credit score, clean driving record, no points or infractions, and 3,4, 5 decades driving. A number of insurance companies out there are playing games.

Im an insursnce agent and our rule of thumb is to always take into account your net worth and how much you could lose in the event youre sued in an accident. And as dave says liability is not the most expensive part of your policy. Actually the highest cost in your premium is your deductibles.
Met Life is very high. I switched to AAA on my 2015 Kia and saved $50. Just bought a new 21 Ram 1500 Crew Cab and I’m paying $154 a month. I wish I left Met Life in the dust years ago
State Farm since i was 15, now 64 - They've received a ton of our money over so many years, lol - Zero issues, various claims were always well addressed - bundled policy - After shopping around once in awhile, no one can ever match or beat their pricing for us... \m/
Considering the length of time between accident and court and how most peoples insurance basically tries not to pay for the things you pay them to cover even if a friend was rear ended by another driver who is clearly at fault years later in another state still going to court.... In the same time both sides coulda spent less money and probably had it taken care of within a year and not had to be forced to get the run around by people paid to do a job they try everything not to do.
Thank you so much for sharing your insurance company on youtube, Dave Ramsey. I found the absolute best rate on full coverage auto insurance through Zander and your insurance agent, Jennifer was super helpful in setting us up today! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Shopping around with a few direct companies as well as an independent agent is a good idea, but make sure you know what coverage you're shopping for so you can compare apples to apples.
As someone who has years in the PI word, I would recommend that your UM (uninsured or underinsured- to protect yourself) coverage matches your Liability insurance coverage. Here to help if you have any specific questions, cheers.
Yes I wish I knew this before. I was in a really bad motorcycle accident years ago and the guy only had 15k coverage. They paid the full policy but that's nothing. I'm currently researching how to structure my insurance and what's the best rates to pick. I luckily had 25k uim coverage on my truck and that helps a little but still my initial treatment was almost 50k! And that was for a few hours in the hospital.
You want to make sure you have good uninsured/underinsured motorists coverage. Just in case you get really bad injuries you won’t have to worry what kind of coverage the at fault party has.
If you have collision then you don't need uninsured/underinsured coverage. Uninsured motorist pays for damage to your car in an accident with an uninsured/underinsured driver; collision coverage pays for damage to your car when it's in an accident no matter who is at fault. :)
Jane uninsured motorist and underinsured motorist cover your injuries. It doesn’t have anything to do with property damage. Some people buy Uninsured motorist for the car which isn’t necessary if you have collision like you said. However if your car is worth less than $3500 it’s cheaper to get Uninsured motorist for property damage than paying for collision coverage.
I tried to use Zander insurance but even though they beat the price on auto insurance they said they couldn’t find any company that wanted to give me a quote for home insurance because I live in Oklahoma 😏 So we just raised our coverages and our deductible w our original State Farm company. 8:51
Dave Ramsey is correct on his first part but not on the second part. You want your insurance company to fight to not pay for the other car because that goes against your future premiums and the extra cost to you. No one pays more than State Farm and USAA for your actual car when you insure with them. Independent agents also will sell you companies like Hippo, Lemonade, The General and other substandard companies that will likely be cheaper on the front end but they won’t pay for your car when you damage it in an accident or have a comprehensive claim and they won’t pay for your claim if you do anything outside of the norm like lend your car to your sibling or parent who’s not listed on the policy or have your 16 year old have an accident the day they start driving and you haven’t yet added them as a driver to the policy. All insurance companies are not created equal.
I have usaa and I'm currently researching what the best policy for me would be. The rates are increasing but when I called they said it was the entire state. I also had an accident where the other guy only carried 15k policy and I recieved the full amount but it's not enough. Luckily I had uim with usaa but even that isn't high enough. I saw someone mention that uim should be as high as your liability coverage. I want to increase mine because if another accident happens and they don't have good insurance that'll suck.
Based on WHERE I WORK and how much I earn...NOT A LOT... I buy the absolute cheapest and least car insurance i CAN..... Because I don't have a choise!!!! My income only goes so far. And I'm still paying off debt... Or trying to anyway.
There is nothing wrong with working with a captive or independent agent. You can't go to Toyota and buy a brand new Ford. you will find that many independent agents have very poor customer service and quote you with horrible companies like first Chicago.
What you really need to be looking at is the insurance companies loss reserves. Doesn’t matter how great of a rate you get if your company can’t afford to pay claims. If you are saving $100/month on auto insurance by switching companies you should really do a hard look at that companies financials. Also on a side note, any time our insured is deemed “at fault” it is going to be scrutinized a lot harder because that is what you pay a big insurance company for. Nobody wants there insurer to rollover and play dead because ultimately that is going to cost our client more money in premium down the road. Do your research and don’t listen to this. Please.
Yea state farm isn’t the best, i have them and they always send letters telling me to NEVER claim responsibility, in-fact they tell me to just call the cops and let them figure it out.
If you say you were responsible. Then the claim counts as your fault. They can’t defend you. A lot of people set up insurance scams. I was at the store and two older women were toward the back of my car. I saw them on my back up camera. They were waiting for me to back up. I saw them getting ready to fall backward. I rolled down my window and said I see you back there. They were startled and took off in the opposite direction very quickly.
My GEICO insurance renewal increases by 25% (about $250). No accidents or changes during the previous term. I called the agent, and he said there were more accidents occurred in this area. I understand if it is a 5% increase, but 25% seems ridiculous. I want to know whether anyone experienced the same, and how about other carriers. I also would like to know if anyone knows of a good website that compares local rates.
Been with State Farm since I bought my first car. I’ve shopped around and never found anyone who beats them. Never had a claim, so can’t speak to that.
I had a bad experience with Progressive. I had a clean driving record. Once I was cut off by a 18 wheeler and my driver side mirror got smacked off by an orange construction cone on the highway in AZ. They took 5 weeks to replace my mirror and jacked my annual premium by $2000 a year! I dropped them immediately. 😐
State farm rely bad I have been with them many years recently someone without I suran e hit my car and iam fi di g hard time with claim. It seems that they are trying not to pay. think I need to change to different company.
I have state farm house and car. They are a nightmare. After a hurricane (and I live in the mountains) we had tropical winds of 90 or miles an hour 2 years ago and it made huge trees on the back property fall over on my roof in the back of it and popped all the screws of the metal roof. Took down 9 trees. They send an agent and quote 600.00 for getting trees taken off and replace/repair the roof damage. Well the adjuster came out in his dress shoes and clothes and insisted to climb on the roof which had wet leaves on it even though we advised not. He has the ladder on the front of the house on the roof, jumps up and down on a gable roof and he falls off ladder and all damaging the front end. Now the company gives another quote of 3000.00 because they need to replace a fourth of the roof. Was not happy as it looked like a patchwork quilt in red, they resisted to pay, I went to the mortgage company and they agreed they would send a bank adjuster as there is a "line of view" clause in the policy and the entire roof needed replacement. Took 2 months of this back and forth with them and then when I told them the mortgage company was getting involved and sent it to the vice president they call and the claim is 17000.00 for replacing roof and trees. State Farm is very hard to deal with.
Your price is determined by statistics. If your learn how companies rate you then you can make better choices. Switching every year eventually puts you in the defector pool and most companies will charge you more because your a bad investment. You need enough insurance to prevent losing your assets.
Hi Everyone, I am a licensed Insurance agent and if anyone has any questions please feel free to reach out regarding any insurance needs. Great video as always Dave and keep up the great work!
I have a 19 year old car with really low mileage. I was wondering if you could tell what kind of coverage would be best and what I don’t need? I’m tired of the policy always going up. If there is something I don’t need then I rather not have it, but I’m not sure what that would be.
On 2 occasions I had claims on state farm. I was astonished on how fast I got my money. It was less than 2 weeks both times. They even let me drive to the office to pickup the check instead of waiting for the normal mail delivery. Dave's experience is unfortunate but he shouldn't blanket his opinion on the whole company. Also, one of my claims was with a friend driver and that didn't slow down the process. Yes the big companies can be more expensive but they do provide excellent service, at least in my case. Maybe Dave was at fault and so they gave him a hard time 😅😅
Any insurance companies goal is going to be to protect their insured. If you’re a claimant, it is almost always going to be a fight unless the companies insured outright tells the company “hey I did this it was my fault. Use my policy to pay for the damages.” Even if you do so, your company still has the right to an investigation to determine lability. Claims are a case by case basis thing; and one poor experience does not a poor company make. The general public in this industry is so quick to have one bad experience and then claim for the rest of their lives that “COMPANY A IS AWFUL THEY DIDNT PAY ME” I’ve done claims. I’ve sold insurance for a variety of companies. Have been on both the front and back end, I can assure you, regardless of whatever company you’re with, they WANT to pay your claim. If you’re there insured. Regardless of that, they still have a job to do, and they won’t be as quick to hand out money to someone who has no affiliation to their company. If they’re paying for it, they’re going to make sure beyond a shadow of a doubt that the money is owed.
I have heard numerous horrible things about state farm both online and people I know personally. There's a viral video of an agent trying to screw a homeowner out of a new roof.
He missed talking about medpay. I’m I and umpd. And deductibles. So at the end of the day, he only advised on 10% of the policy coverages. So not really a good advice. He did cover liability and that was correct.
So I went through Zander for some quotes and they came back with quotes only from Progressive and Safeco. I refuse to do business with Progressive and I've never heard of Safeco. I ended up getting quotes from the big guys anyway.

Natty Fatty Powerlifting well for one thing each state has different coverage requirements and some coverages exist in some states and not in others (Personal Injury Protection). Just like the cost of living and food is different from state to state, insurance is no exception. So if you move from a state where less coverage is required and the state minimums are lower to a state where more coverage is required (AND top that off with moving to an area where accidents are more frequent in the area and statistically speaking you are more at risk) then it’s not exactly surprising how much your rates can go up quite a bit. But they can also go down quite a bit too depending on where you go.
I have a question should I have full coverage on a 2012 Kia forte or should I just go with State minimum insurance on a 2012 Kia forte I really appreciate some feedback thank you
Once you’re 25 the insurance will go down big time. If you’re driving a 94, I’d recommend having really low collision and comprehensive. Just make sure to have good liability like Dave says. That’s really the most important part of the insurance. It covers you when you’re at fault and protects against any law suits

Not really. Just kind of depends on the company and their ways of claims. Claims is such a cloud of grey area unless there is someone definitely at fault with evidence to provide.
Dave, my father passed away over 20 years ago. Your like the dad I need advice from right now ❤
I agree, get at least 50k worth of liability! I al recommend a dash cam!
Best,
MH
I agree with you completely. This is one of the reasons I have chosen to remain an independent insurance agent so I can offer my clients the best insurance coverage for their needs. Got offered a few captive positions in the past and I actually turned them down because I didn't want to limit the insurance I offered.
Im looking for an agent. Do you work in CA?
@@jenniferrashell. No I am not licensed in California unfortunately. Usually an agent will disclose if they are independent or captive though. Sorry i didn't see your comment before. If your looking for car insurance though goosehead insurance is a firm that tried recruiting me at one point. They work with about 80-100 different carriers so they can shop around for you.
They rip you off more so with home insurance if you don't compare rates every year.
They were charging me $1400/year and I said I'm leaving them, then they dropped it to $700
but there are also dozens of other factors that go into your rating besides the few things you mentioned....
@@TheKhrissss Sure! I can imagine a few. Types of vehicles, for instance. Tell me some more.
@@1redrubberball types of vehicles and the cost to repair that vehicle, location, age, years of driving experience (with an active license), accident frequency in your area, usage of the vehicle, the coverage you choose...
@@TheKhrissss
Yeah, they'll charge you as the only driver for 2 vehicles, despite the fact that one has liability only and the other has full coverage and is driven far less, and neither can be driven simultaneously, the owner is retired and drives 6-7K miles per year, not 12-15K like in working years.
Im an insursnce agent and our rule of thumb is to always take into account your net worth and how much you could lose in the event youre sued in an accident. And as dave says liability is not the most expensive part of your policy. Actually the highest cost in your premium is your deductibles.
He said liability is the cheapest not the most expensive.

That’s awesome service! I wish more agents did that. I ended up finding my own deal-$25/month with Insurance Panda. Can't beat that!
I've never had a problem with State Farm. When my truck was hit, I just turned in my bills and they paid them.
Same here and it’s the cheapest that I’ve priced.
My dad got hit in his own drive way and it’s been two weeks and haven’t heard anything from them.
Metromile is the way to go. I have car insurance through them and currently pay an average of $27/month.
Yes indeed I have 500k CSL. Hospital costs can easily reach that.

So we just raised our coverages and our deductible w our original State Farm company.

Here in BC Canada min liability is 200,000. Can purchase up to 5 mill.
Nice Ontario get shaft up the bum.
Please.
Yup. Saved a good chunk of money by going with an independent agent for home and auto.
I need to look into that.
Never had a claim, so can’t speak to that.
i agree,.......and stay away for state farm

I had a bad experience with Progressive.
I had a clean driving record. Once I was cut off by a 18 wheeler and my driver side mirror got smacked off by an orange construction cone on the highway in AZ.
They took 5 weeks to replace my mirror and jacked my annual premium by $2000 a year! I dropped them immediately. 😐
State farm rely bad I have been with them many years recently someone without I suran e hit my car and iam fi di g hard time with claim. It seems that they are trying not to pay. think I need to change to different company.
Be your own independent agent. With the internet, it's quite simple.
Underrated comment.
Sounds like you live where I do too by the description of the storm and trees falling down all over the place.
Your price is determined by statistics. If your learn how companies rate you then you can make better choices. Switching every year eventually puts you in the defector pool and most companies will charge you more because your a bad investment. You need enough insurance to prevent losing your assets.

Is collision coverage worth it if we are debt free with a fully funded emergency fund?
I have a 19 year old car with really low mileage. I was wondering if you could tell what kind of coverage would be best and what I don’t need? I’m tired of the policy always going up. If there is something I don’t need then I rather not have it, but I’m not sure what that would be.
So liability is better than full coverage?

On 2 occasions I had claims on state farm. I was astonished on how fast I got my money. It was less than 2 weeks both times. They even let me drive to the office to pickup the check instead of waiting for the normal mail delivery. Dave's experience is unfortunate but he shouldn't blanket his opinion on the whole company. Also, one of my claims was with a friend driver and that didn't slow down the process. Yes the big companies can be more expensive but they do provide excellent service, at least in my case. Maybe Dave was at fault and so they gave him a hard time 😅😅

I agree, Statefarm has always been a pleasure to work with in my experience
Any insurance companies goal is going to be to protect their insured. If you’re a claimant, it is almost always going to be a fight unless the companies insured outright tells the company “hey I did this it was my fault. Use my policy to pay for the damages.” Even if you do so, your company still has the right to an investigation to determine lability. Claims are a case by case basis thing; and one poor experience does not a poor company make.
The general public in this industry is so quick to have one bad experience and then claim for the rest of their lives that “COMPANY A IS AWFUL THEY DIDNT PAY ME”
I’ve done claims.
You heard it from Dave, State Farm fights for its policy holders.
So I went through Zander for some quotes and they came back with quotes only from Progressive and Safeco.
I refuse to do business with Progressive and I've never heard of Safeco.
I ended up getting quotes from the big guys anyway.

just get liability its to depend where u live. when I was trying to move from Indiana to NJ they were charging me 1000 dollar months because i was newbie driving.
If you're a newbie driver you're (statistically speaking) more of a risk because of the lack of driving experience with an active license

But what happens if and when you get into a collision... wouldn't it be more difficult for you to get that smaller insurer to pay out/handle the issue? Just curious but really want to know. I've personally always had Direct Auto
Not really. Just kind of depends on the company and their ways of claims. Claims is such a cloud of grey area unless there is someone definitely at fault with evidence to provide. Generally claims are hard because most of the time, people don't want to listen to claims department when they ask for things like pictures, police report, damages, receipts in order to realistically play for an accurate payout for the claim.
