Medford MERC-1 OTF. Un-Sugarcoated Review, Test, Fix.

- This video is my initial look at Medford newest release - MERC-1 OTF. The company is being innovative, which is good. It also feels as if the rushed some of the design while also adding features that aren’t easily explained. Did it qualify as my next EDC knife? Watch and judge for yourself!

Please feel free to ask any questions! Also, subscribe! That helps the channel. I’m not affiliated with any company that makes or sells knives so when you hit Like and especially Share, the TH-cam algorithm goes into the hyperdrive and shows the video to more folks who have similar interests as you. And that’s how we spread the word to the community together!
The main reason I subscribed to this channel is honest reviews with prescribed solutions to make a knife better.
You never disappoint, sir.
It's making me more interested in getting an engineering degree.
Do it!
In all seriousness- I’d bet 1% or less of these sold even get used once to butter bread. Maybe cut a few pieces of paper(when they’re shipped actually sharp). Then put away so the guy can move onto the next shiny thing. Kudos to you for testing it out.
I see lots of guys carrying them as a status symbol. Also, I work daily with folks that actually go down range and they are carrying Toors and Striders fixed blades, Adamas or Presidios, sometimes Gerber 06 Autos. They would not mind a Medford but more as a retirement gift.
Thank you for your videos, the effort and testing you put into it provides a lot of valuable information on overall design and manufacturing quality.
I think you are filling a gap that was left behind by Nick Shabazz when he couldn't do as many reviews anymore. There's already enough reviewers that hold a knife into a camera and say "It's shiny and expensve and you NEED it!" imo.
You and JoeX are a blessing to the knife community for calling out overpriced and overrated manufacturers and saving people money in the process.
Regards from Germany :)
Thank you for the great comment!
You're going to make Greg mad at you again!! LOL. Great video.
I don’t really care. If he was smart, he’d be asking guys that aren’t blowing smoke up his arse to look at prototypes. Ego.
Once again, this channel is criminally underrated and deserves way more eyes....
Off topic question.... Have you ever got your hands on any of the auto Ritter Hogues? I just ordered the jade variant after weeks of trying to decide on a new auto. There's literally no videos or sources, "that I can find atleast" where they put the knife through any kind of hardship.
I have been pondering OTFs for a couple of years. I only want one and I really like the blade and style of the Medford. I guess I will just keep shopping.
Thanks for saving me 600 bones.
Combat troodon. Best otf I've had. Regular troodon is a good one too. Just my opinion
For a US-made OTF, I can’t recommend Microtech over Kershaw Livewire. See these videos:

Kershaw or Hogue?
@@fredeschen3783 Kershaw.
Just watched this and the OTF know of the singing of them. I have an Italian AKC otf and it has that spring noise and it is the same sound as an AR-15 if you have your ear on the receiver.
Thanks!
Thank you so much! Any ideas for a future projects?
@@CuttingBoardRx just a small token of my appreciation. I've benefited so much from your expertise! Just keep up the great work!
If you pull the switch spring out slightly causing the spring to lengthen it will make the button sound lessen.
I like Medfords I have 14 but I am still waiting on mine which is a strike proof dagger blade I ordered in December 2022
Pretty much exactly how I thought this review would go. Greg is still learning and trying to get better, while changing things to suit the changing environment. He’ll be fine.
To be a successful engineer one has to fill the room with smartest people one can hire and then walk in stupid every single time. If one assumes he’s the smartest person in that room, he’s going to fail.
I agree. Live and learn.
Although the G&G hawk deadlock is extremely expensive and hard to get, i hope one day you can test one on your channel. That'd be awesome as no one has done an actual stress test with one.
Noted!
Notwithstanding the greatness of the livewire, I am a Microtech guy now - they are adding titanium, improved actions, reducing some prices, incredible variety - perfection, no but Microtech is listening and they have me absolutely hooked lol… I have bought everything lately and even the new Combat Troodon Natural Signature Interceptor in addition to LUDT Gen Ill Black, Socom Elite Auto Natural, Cypher Il Black, Cypher Il Natural, 2 Merlot T/E Ultratechs, Combat Troodon Gen Ill Natural, Merlot Combat Troodon Warhound, Natural Hera Il, Natural Glykon and just ordered a Ram Lok Stitch Natural all in the past 2 months... I am holding off on the Medford for now - I appreciate the effort and will see - but with Microtech launching the Atreus zero blade play soon, that’s where my attention is now…
When Microtech publicly admits that RamLoc had major safety deficiencies, ALL of their knives are off my shopping list. That said, they sure know how to make an OTF!
Boycotting only hurts america - i am sticking with Microtech because they are teally workimg hard to deliver value, wuality and variety - to each his own but a boycott of anything american is not the answer.
@@DavidV4444 I’m a degreed engineer and right before my graduation I had to take engineering ethics class. At the end of the semester we had to swear an oath to protect safety and well being of the American public, so help us God. Let me reiterate: I’m sworn to this! So you see, I can’t just condone a poorly designed unsafe product. Once deficiency is discovered it would be unethical for me to remain silent and a company that knowingly releases a flawed product and then silently slides a fix in without a recall or replacement offer is dead to me. Also, there is no place for Lay-Z Boy chair “patriotism” on my channel. I actually serve my country every day, and yes, my daytime job also required an oath to be taken.
lol - you clearly think very highly of yourself - you are the smartest most ethical and highly regarded legend in his own mind - more Microtechs for me.
@DavidV4444 nah, obviously you’re more smarter.
This was incredibly educational. well done.
You're the man OMG 600.00 dollars screw that. Kershaw Livewire is still the best glad I listen to you bought the Livewire. I want to get more OTF's for my collection maybe Guardian Tactical. Thank you for doing all of these real deal test I could never do that it would kill me but that the way to see if you can count on it and you fix the problem mint.
Glad I could help!
@@CuttingBoardRx maybe I will just get my next OTF will be the Hogue Knives Exploit you tested that one and had good luck with it also. I just don't want to take a chance on something that not been proven like the testing you do I really don't want to throw money away. Your channel is golden to me again THANK YOU
Try microtechs new stuff like gen 3 combat troodon you will be happy trust me
Agreed, I love my livewire
This channel is the entire reason I purchased the tanto livewire. The factory edge was practically dull but a few passes on my worksharp pro and now she's like a laser. I use it daily at work and have only had to strop twice over a 2 month period.
Hope they get the issues resolved, that is an awesome looking otf
They can’t resolve issues without admitting that they have issues. Greg’s nugget won’t be able to process that
@CuttingBoardRx Fair enough, I will confess I'm not too familiar with Medford other than a few brief clips of Greg talking and some of your previous reviews. I appreciate the fact that they really prioritize American manufacturing and I hope they can begin to repair the brand image!
@CuttingBoardRx also just fyi, Microtech interceptor blade on combat troodon dropped this afternoon. I was able to hold one of the Gen iiis this week and they feel amazing
No it's not.
@@TeaDoubleE85 interceptor blade is on microtechgear website?
I ordered the Proof Strike 10f 100 Medford Praterion back in November 2022 ,They also made 100 Dagger Blade otf's so It will be close to Two Years before it arrives , I Hope they Fix all the problems First. That is a long wait ,Because i have bought a few otf's sense the One in 2022 The Big Deal ws no outside Hardware that has already been Done . My old Thumb is weak The lighting is okay but the knife is just okay. My favorite otf the Microtech combat trodoon is to hard, But I got The Gen 3 Combat Trrodoon it is Dual sprung and is easy Very easy to Deploy my favorite . I only Bought The Medford Proof Stripe otf was They only made 100 .can't wait .Thanks .
Mine is on its 2nd trip back home as I was getting a failure in the downward angle. The primary grind is different than what is shown on the site and after it went in the first time it had the spring sound.
Will see how it comes back and might order a tool for it since I don't have the but you do.
I just watched your video about it! Immediately I thought Aha! They took the “vulcanizing” out. It took a lot of will power to not call this feature moronic as it will inevitably work itself out of the spring coils and foul the knife.
You must have skipped through the part where I showed my unauthorized tool which I made out of a flat screwdriver bit. The screw engagement is only 1 thread so it should not be difficult to remove it. This btw is the second moronic feature - a fastener should be engaging 3 threads minimum.
@@CuttingBoardRx oh no I didn't realize that you created that tool. As I had seen similar ones when I was looking for them. I have not seen that hrc tester before very cool.
@BladeBanter these testers are harder to use than the standard ones. Your studio setup is very nice, great background
@@CuttingBoardRx thanks put it together with from Home Depot and Amazon.
I ordered one of these with the Praetorian style blade back in November of 2022, and I just received it yesterday, in July 2024. After opening it a few times, it started failing to close. I worked it manually a number of times and then it started working again. However, it rings like a bell. It is quite loud. I wonder if the "vulcanizing" material came off and stuck in a place where it was blocking the knife from sliding. Perhaps I should open it and see if that was the case, and remove any loose material so it doesn't jam it up again. Where can I get the pin driver tool (or whatever it's called) to remove that 6 pin nut thing?
@@1718bb you don’t need a special tool as only one or one and a half threads are engaged, so torque is not that great. You could modify a flat 1/4” screw driver bit. 2 prongs are sufficient!
I am almost positive is the rubber because it is acting exactly as was mine. Which, btw is running like a champ now.
Just get combat troodon and be done with it
@@justinhorn2864 I have 8 Microtech OTFs including the Trudon. It’s a knife. Blah. As a Microtech expert, wouldn’t you say that Cypher 2 is a closer analogy to Medford OTF?
So many Medfords! I love how you're displaying the Benchmade Adira box! 😂
Honestly, it’s been sitting there since the salt water test video I worked on last week
While it’s not perfect my Heretic Cleric II has zero blade rattle, zero switch rattle and yet the springs are completely uncoated. No grease or anything and it’s still completely silent when you shake it or wiggle the switch. (New outta the box it was dull as a butter knife though)
LOL any knife should be 1. Sharp, 2. Reliable, 3. Ergonomic, 4. Affordable and 5. Aesthetically appealing. A simple friggin’ formula! Yet even the top companies fail to deliver more than 3 out of 5! The only knife known to me as of now that checks all the boxes is Kershaw Livewire
@@CuttingBoardRx Would you believe that I actually sent it back after two weeks for a sharpening AND IT CANE BACK DULL? They had me pay for shipping and it still wasn’t fixed. Considering it was a $700 knife I would expect it to be able to cleanly cut paper. Grrrrrrr
Very interesting!
Glad you don't sugarcoat reviews. Seems like you have at least 10 Medford products. I would estimate that represents about $4000 - $7000. Quite a collection ! You are the only one I'm aware of that actually tests them as knives. There are a couple that appeal to me but I'll never buy one. Too overpriced for not being fully baked when new.
Also there is Greg.
There’s more to Greg than meets the eye
This guy spends a LOT of money on knives... It's a flex, I guess.
@@21_Cabbage_ every time I see a Honda Civic with a dangling loud $600 exhaust pipe and $3K rims, I think hmm, I can buy a ton of knives for that! And then go ahead and do it 🤣
@@CuttingBoardRx I guess that makes sense. Thanks.
I never really liked out the front autos .but I do love side Open autos.
Check out the Ritter Hogues auto variants. I have tons of autos from 20 dollar gas station to 600+ microtechs & pro-tech yet the 200 dollar Ritter hogue has become my all time favorite.
Grease + pocket lint/dust = possible jamming occurring to the interior moving parts that can affect blade movement?
Hence an incredibly easy disassembly on this one. ☝️
Love this channel. Keep up the deep dives. And I'm starting to think alot of Boeing executives end up at alot of knifefe companies. Ugh.
Guns, guitars and knives 🤘
I ordered one about 19 months ago and still don't have it. I think I want my money back .
I’d love to see you take a look at the Benchmade Presidio ll (if you haven’t already).
The ting is the thing - but you're way off, that's a B at around 420Hz.
Excellent video!
I see so many medfords flooding DLT trading. Seems that they are prioritizing quantity over quality.
They never been focused on quality in the same way as, say, CRK are. The flooding is due to big retailers dropping the brand due to some public comments Medford made that were interpreted as attacking Chinese manufacturers.
DLT is definitely overflowing with them, they keep adding to it also.
Спасибо, хороший обзор. У меня combat troodon frag off издаёт такие же звуки. Оставлю как есть . Вы лучший обзорщик ножей.
So removing the ball and spring plus adding grease to the engine solved the lock failure? Great video btw
I was wondering if maxace otf will pass the tree of doom. Saw their youtube testing maxace nexus. Similar with your test.
you are the best brother im laughing my ass off over here !! love your evidence bag . i have the new microtech cypher and the new combat troodon put a little grease on my springs and no more spring sing ..love them
Microtech is not on my shopping list for now because of how they handled the RamLoc fiasco. Once they publicly acknowledge the deficiencies, I will return to the brand.
Did you buy one of Medford’s Black Cards out of curiosity?
Nope.
Medford is supposed to be known for strong locks... That genuinely surprised me. Though it wouldn't be the first ridiculously expensive knife I've seen that fails.
Ive seen praetorians fail.
Frame locks, all of them, fail under certain conditions, like battonning. But a firmly gripped Praetorian will stand up to most abuses due to its oversized frame lock bar. There are many things to love about these knives, especially the perfect HT but they are more of a cult item. I think Greg is putting much of his efforts to get out of the cult niche and that’s why some of the products feel rushed.
@@danbalcom8510 that REALLY surprises me lol
Heavy duty premium knife like Chris Reeves Umnumzaan? Isn't that tip lost somewhere in the tree of doom?
yes, on the 50th strike… thanks for the reminder 😢 cost me 200 bucks to replace the blade
You still classify it as a good heavy duty premium knife?
@@mel87123 actually you just gave me an idea for another video involving CRK knives!
50 strikes is nothing to sneeze at
I'm not the biggest Medford fan. But I do have the manual Nosferatu; I really like it, it's overpriced, but nice in my collection.
I like mine. He sure knows what a sexy blade should look like 👍
Greg should have consulted with you before making it production. At least it should pass the tree of doom 😅
He shouldn’t consult me, he should have consulted any mechanical engineer with test background. Like I said, once someone decides he’s the smartest guy in the room, mistakes will follow.
Yes!!!
The tree test has revealed total failure in a couple Chinese clones of Halo 5 and Halo 6. That collapsed like a movie knife.
Not surprising. Had a Praetorian close up on my hand, requiring stitches.
Next time you see a teary-eyed Greg Medford recapping some 10 year-old anecdote of an unnamed hero committing acts of superhuman valour with the use of his knife, write this comment on his live feed. That said, I bought 10 Medfords for badass looks more than anything else.
I ordered a strike proof in Merc in December 2022 and still have not received mine
That’s strange. He made several videos where he shipped out 24 knives at a time. He read people’s names and signed a couple boxes. Funny, cause one dude ordered 4-6 knives, probably angling for eBay bubba-rich profits. He should have seen that and send yours out first. Call him, though, maybe he’ll give up his EDC?
@@CuttingBoardRx I e mailed Amy she said I am number 63 on the dagger strike proof and she said they have only shipped 23 of the dagger watched every video as they came out my name hasn’t been called I never thot it would be years before I received it when I ordered I own 10 Medfords this one will be 11 if they ever get it sent out
@markjohnson6485 good luck and don’t be discouraged. Maybe yours will turn out perfectly.

It resonates close to b flat to my ear and keyboard.
No wonder my guitar skills suck! It totally sounds like an E to me 😂😅
Not an "E"🤣...but that's why you are one heck of an engineer and not a musician
@@mel87123 I should have asked Medford which note he’s trying to hit 🤣
I use silicone grease for OTFs
Why not Teflon oil?
@@helleranthony907 oops I mean just the spring for the twang and also the trigger so it rattles less. I can’t recall and may not of put anything for the interior mechanism sliding.
If I recall correctly it was widely accepted to just spray wd40 inside without even opening and actuating the firing and retracting a few times as a means of maintenance. (Microtech didn’t allow opening )
@WillEDC I don’t recommend any coating compounds on OTFs as they foul the mechanism. WD40, PB Break, these are penetrating solvents and any lubrication you gain initially dissolves the lube. Also don’t recommend
I don’t recommend using silicone grease on any knife that you may use for food prep. It’s toxic. I use mineral spirits-based butcher block grease for medium lubrication.
@@CuttingBoardRx where did you buy that? I do have mineral oil for the cutting board but never seen it in grease format
What I don’t understand is, every single knife retailer carries hundreds , if not thousands of Medford knives. They CANT be moving like that for retailers to keep purchasing them like that. When the Chinese racial controversy happened , I personally emailed DLT to ask if they were still going to carry his products and they stated that they would not order any new products, they would only sell their remaining stock which at that point in time, they stated was almost $900k worth of stock . However , it seems like they reneged on that promise as well as all of the other retailers .
Knife Center stopped selling them dead cold. But they still carry Shirogorov line. His shop is bedecked with “Made in Russia for the Russians” stickers, which is understandable, but we know where his taxes are going: bombed out schools and hospitals in Ukraine. KC is being selectively woke and not one reviewer is outraged.
@@CuttingBoardRx good, I’m glad they did at least but yeah the Russian thing is a tricky topic . I would like to believe that the majority of Russian knife makers don’t support the fascism and genocidal tendecies of their “fearless” leader but us Americans don’t know for sure unless they themselves are outspoken about their political views online or somewhere public. I think it would be a real travesty to shun genuine opposition to the Russian government that just so happens to be Russian and live there. If they are opposed to the war and don’t support it, they should have just as much right as any other maker/ manufacturer to have their products sold abroad.
Omg
@@GerstBladeworksdidn’t anyone tell you? It’s not safe to oppose the government in Russia.
They had to start selling again as Medford accounts for a large part of their sales and demand went up after the Chinese racial incident.
WTF! Glad I didn’t preorder one and have to wait 1.5+ years to receive it. Get yourself a Hawk Deadlock. Enough said. Mic drop!
Deadlocks are amazing buy not immune to mechanical issues. I have seen a number of them have to go back due to issues.
Those are overpriced as well. There’s no reason why a knife like that should cost 3-5k . That’s absurd
Entry table price is $1,800 for a Ti Model C with standard cf inlays. You should be able to get the aluminum ones for less.

Grease, my friend! It fixes it all!
Any otf knife is bound to fail.Hopefully not when their brand new tho.But i gotta say..i have collected and use alot of knives over 43 year period and medford knives are by far the most well made hard use knives ive seen.So anyone who says there garbage just dont know what theyre talking about, not in the slightest.Btw great videos
Every single Medford I owned or handled has been simultaneously great in some way and screwed up in some way. Except for ASK slip joint, which is perfect in every respect. Why? The regular Medfords are made mostly by hand or on the very old-school machines mostly by young metalworkers who are being trained on the job. The ASK slip joints are machine-made on modern high volume equipment. All are ridiculously priced.
That seems to be the story with alot of things.I just dont think its fair if your spending insane amounts of money on something they shouldnt have an inexperienced person building any aspect of it.
Today we have the internet. We can search for the best money/value ratio items. This goes for almost everything. Before i would pay high dollars for a mediocre Medford knife, i would order a fully custom made knife from a less known maker with better quality for maybe even less money.
@@Lion_Hamza don’t tell it to me, tell it to Greg Medford, he has a TH-cam channel too
It's Bb
My Medford Smooth Criminal is dull as a butter knife, has basically zero detent, abd the general fit and finish is gas station knife level.
I live outside of the US, so it's a waste of time and lots of money to send it back, which would likely be pointless anyway since Greg will probably claim it's fine. Who knows if I even get it sent back. Although at this point I'm not even sure what to do with this trash.
What a total waste of money.
I traded that model for a Spydie McBee, which is always on me now. ‘Cause nobody ain’t got no time for that! On the same day I traded the 187 Warthog for a brand new CRK 31 Sebenza with wood inlays and satin finish blade MagnaCut. You see, Greg IS helping the community to own the next level knives!
@@CuttingBoardRx haha, yeah, I guess from that perspective he is!
