Disney's Practical Guide to Path Tracing

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 15 ส.ค. 2024
  • Path tracing is a method for generating digital images by simulating how light would interact with objects in a virtual world. The path of light is traced by shooting rays (line segments) into the scene and tracking them as they bounce between objects. Path tracing gets its name from calculating the full path of light from a light source to the camera. Light can potentially bounce between many objects inside the virtual scene. As a ray of light hits a surface, it bounces and creates new rays of light. A path can therefore consist of a number of rays. By collecting all of the rays along a path together, the contributions of a light source and the surfaces along the path can be calculated. These calculations are used to produce a final image.

      IF you're working on anything important, you should save it to a backup copy about every 30 minutes. You can keep overwriting the same backup file ofc, so you don't end up having a million different versions of the same thing. However, if you really want added security you can. For any program, CTRL + S(for save) or CTRL + SHIFT + S(for save as) is your friend. Get to know it well. It is a good friend. once you get used to the shortcut it will make your life much easier, trust me. 10 years of music production and probably an HOUR of lost songs later, I can safely say I don't lose any of my projects anymore because of these practices. Making backups of anything you're working on that is important is so, so beneficial. You might think my advice is trivial now, but if (or rather, WHEN) the time comes where you lost hours of hard work from an error - you'll be thanking me :)

      Very nostalgic. Between the music, fonts, the narrator’s voice and accent, the subtle static in the audio,and the non-CG appearance of the scene, I was starting to think that path tracing had a different meaning in hand drawn cell animation and this was a restored video from the 50s.
      It didn’t make sense that animators cared that much about the physics of light so I also questioned my sanity until the computer with a modern flat screen display came out.
      Very well done.

      Ray tracing works the same way. I’m not actually sure what the difference between ray tracing and path tracing is. Maybe other steps in the rendering process are different. Or maybe it’s just a different name for the same technique.

    • @SimoneBellomonte
      @SimoneBellomonte ปีที่แล้ว

      @@zemoxian They just explained it though, ray tracing traces light from the sun, ending up wasting precious computational time, but it's also much more accurate, while path tracing traces from the camera, tbh I'm not sure if that's the only difference because if some rays don't even reach the camera then technically it shouldn't be any less accurate, just faster? So feel free to correct me if I'm wrong or anybody more insightful than me knows more. Meh I'll just google it on wikipedia and see:
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Path_tracing
      So apparently it has nothing to do from where the ray starts, so yes path-tracing is indeed just a more advanced version of ray-tracing.

      Banana Warrior Thank you for your opinion. Here is mine.
      If there's another option, I'd rather enjoy every second of my days, even while pushed to my limit, than spend most of every day doing nothing I was interested in. I wouldn't even be good at the uninteresting thing, which disturbs me. No passion and no fun every day for the rest of my life just to fill the endless need to replenish my body... It's not about living that matters; it's about what you do with it that matters most. Loving and supporting others is what I'm passionate about. (I typed this using Window's on-screen keyboard because my keyboard broke to present you, and everyone else reading, with an opposite opinion to know about and consider)

      Another perspective: tons of passionate game developers get burned out due to how overworked they are, and they don't want to working in games ever again. From what I've heard, the animation industry is even worse in that respect. If you work in an environment that makes you hate doing what you used love, then there's a problem.

    Great cute video. The only critique I'd have other than over-doing it on the bad sound to make it seem old would be that light doesn't actually behave that way. Light spreads out in waves that go in the direction of rays and the rays are not always straight. For that small scene most if not all rays would seem straight enough but light travels different through different media. This video was a huge over-simplification.

    • @vylbird8014
      @vylbird8014 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a huge simplification that's used in rendering. To simulate light with a full wave model would not be at all practical - the processing requirements would be staggering. Modeling light instead using straight rays can produce an image which is almost as good, but doesn't take decades of computation to render.

  • @JustWasted3HoursHere
    @JustWasted3HoursHere 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    If the light source(s) and certain objects in the scene are not going to move, their texture characteristics can be "baked" so that the lighting calculations do not have to be done for each frame. "Baking" basically means the lighting and surface characteristics can be made as part of the object and can be viewed from any angle with the correct look. There are also many other tricks that can be used to save processing time (such as not rendering the backsides (opposite side of objects from camera) of objects in some cases).

    • @kdmjf12000
      @kdmjf12000 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Giovanni P. Path tracing is a specific way of utilizing ray-tracing. NVIDIA’s RTX is hardware acceleration for ray-tracing task including path tracing. There is a demo video from a university project of Quake 2 fully path traced using RTX tech just a few days ago.
      The compute power currently available is still too weak to run modern AAA photorealistic title fully ray-traced. Path tracing is the next logical step if we want to do fully ray-tracing game. (Although there are other similar methods) It is basically an optimized method of doing deep ray-tracing (multiple bounces) by attempt to only shine the rays that’s needed; however, it is still very compute expensive and could result in very noisy image is the compute power and/or the denoiser are too weak.

    • @NattalaChao
      @NattalaChao 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** While the creator of Mickey is no longer alive, Disney has still invested a lot of time and money into keeping Mickey relevant and successful. Therefore them keeping the copyright makes sense because otherwise all that investment could be capitalised on by anyone once Mickey entered public domain. There would be no incentive to keep beloved old characters alive and relevant if all that work ended up being used for someone else's benefit.

    • @NattalaChao
      @NattalaChao 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** People would still go to see a Fox made Mickey Mouse movie though so they would still be investing resources that would then be used by competitors.

    • @NattalaChao
      @NattalaChao 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Don't abandoned works already enter public domain though? Though I do think they stay in copyright too long- there's some stuff from like 20 years ago that the creators don't care about anymore that should be public domain. IMO if there isn't a legal version provided then there shouldn't be a problem obtaining a free version for yourself. Although once every year seems excessive, maybe once every 5 or 10? For companies with a lot of licenses the paper work would be insane if it's once a year.
