I‘ve lived in Berlin (from Canada) for the last 8 years and I’m still in love. An 80 year old woman in my local Kneipe told me Berlin is a city where everything is always changing and half the people want the change, and half of them want the past.
I moved to Berlin in 2004 from the UK. I was 29 years old when I moved there. Before moving to Berlin I rarely used to go out. Mainly because I simply didn't like the night life - however, that was in Leicester, so make of that what you will. It was about my second month in Berlin that I met a colleague at work who had also just moved to Berlin from Spain. Both of us hardly knew anyone so we decided to meet up in Berlin and go for a few drinks. From that night forward I realised what a special place Berlin was. We moved from one bar to the next, chatting to strangers having a laugh then finally ending up in some night club hidden down a dark alleyway only knowing about it from word of mouth. I never used to be good at chatting to women, but I soon found a new confidence from meeting so many new people and for me this totally changed my life. I lived for the weekend and those endless nights - sometimes going home with someone, sometimes going home alone. Those days are long gone, as I have a family now and certainly wouldn't have the energy to stay up till the early hours of the morning. But I wouldn't swap those memories for anything else. As a side note, I would say things have changed for the worse. Berlin has certainly lost its edge over the last 20 years and as most people usually comment, it doesn't take long before a good location is ruined by a bunch of influencers.
Please delete your comment or I'll report you, I'm planning on moving to Berlin soon , stop your propaganda, Berlin is getting better and better after COVID ended, do you understand that? It's far better than what it used to be before some years, go f yourself
This. Hasn't been poor since at least a decade. It's a major economic hub and we have lots of big corporations moving their offices here. It's now just a place for rich and privileged people who like clubbing a lot. If you're poor and don't like the night life, there really isn't anything for you here except for long commute times.
As someone who grew up here and has lived here for more than 30 years, I have a completely different view of the city and how it has changed, especially in the last 10 years and not for the better, unfortunately to the point where it is no longer worth living in. I think you portray Berlin from a very tourist perspective. Berlin is cool as long as you have the money or are just a visitor.
@@annakenyeres7171 this idea of there not being enough housing in Berlin is grinding my teeth. There are 126.000 unoccupied apartments in Berlin and this number is actually growing. This means that we are not facing a shortage in housing but we are facing a shortage in AFFORDABLE housing because these apartments are being turned into luxury penthouses for the rich.
I am a born and bred Berliner, and believe me, Berlin has become a Disneyland for artsy rich foreigners. They can still afford the rents compared to their rents at home, while the locals are pushed outside the city due to insane rents. You hipsters from all over the world enjoy the "affordable" living, but it's nothing but your personal bubble. Europe is not a playground, for God's sake. First victim was Prague, now Berlin is done, next thing is Bukarest, apparently. But there are real people in these cities, we are not the etxras in your personality show. Learn at least some words of the respective local language. Wow, I sound pissed.
Please stop moving here. I know you think it's incredibly cheap compared to New York and London. But we don't have affordable housing anymore and I can't survive these insane rent increases. Poor but sexy was 20 years ago, we're cooked.
@@kingmaker2603 You should study German immigration history before you say this. It started with Turkish, Spanish, Greek, Italian immigrants coming to West-Germany and West-Berlin after the war. And it never stopped.
@@kingmaker2603 What rubbish. Berlin was the only city in Germany where residents were exempt from compulsory military service. That's why it has always been a centre of attraction and a melting pot for people who didn't belong to the group of boring Germans.
Been living in Berlin for 10 years. Yes, lots of possibilities for self-exploration, with streets filled with lots of people who took self-exploration too far. Just spend a day on the subway and find out for yourself. It takes a toll on you. Many people borrow from their future to be here.
the Berlin you're advertising in this documentary is accurate in 2010. The current Berlin no longer serves the commoners and underground and has more clubs closing than opening. Gentrification and investment groups caused the prices in the city to soar to unknown heights and pushed locals and poor people out of the city. With many expats coming over to cosplay locals no one learns German here and they expect you to speak English but somehow complain when local city services can't help them. Everything used to be open really late but many places close sooner and sooner due to lack of customers. Sure it's a fun "let's pretend to be free" clubbing vibe for tourists but the city has really lost its edge and is turning into the same mainstream pay to play metropol that for example Paris, New York and Amsterdam and London have become. Is it all doom and gloom? No, because the diversity in people does add something to it all but the free Berlin that people think they know is dead and gone. It's now a refuge for edgy tourists and hipster expats and yuppie kids coming to play with their rich parents money. It is to say the corporate and expats have sooner bastardized than enriched the city, yet I do like how the city finally managed to offer card payment.... at least it's something.
Germany is the third largest ecomomic power in the world. Berlin is going to attract some hangers on so that maybe all that money will rub off on them.
@@DotsonaMap if you're rich, Berlin is great. If you stay here for two months, Berlin is funnn! If you've moved here at least 10 years ago and have an old rental contract, Berlin is not so bad. If you have health issues, Berlin is not so cool (try finding a doctor's appointment). If you are fine with copper-wire expensive slow internet, Berlin is fantastic. If you're ok with having to fax government offices, Berlin is vintage!!! If you're ok with barely functioning public transportation systems, you're gonna love it here. If you can pay 600+ Euros for a shared-flat room (while not making much money), it's your dream city. If you like the nomadic life and are fine with moving every three months until you find your dream flat in 5 years, you'll be in heaven. If it's time to renew your residency permit and you're fine with waiting for months until you can find an appointment OR can afford an expensive lawyer who's gonna do it for you while you're clubbing, sure Berlin is awesome. If you love talking about world politics, gender, human rights while sipping your expensive cocktail or snorting cocaine (bloody drug that is totally anti-human-rights), Berlin is the shit!! ;)
Not a lot of trust fund kids in Berlin and Bohemia is nowhere to be found. Berlin is raw, harsh, ugly, trashy and many people who lives here manages to make things beautiful and cute in all madness. It's not Bohemia -it's resilience and love.
I was born here in Berlin and have been living on Warschauer Straße for over 30 years now and in the last 15 years, in my opinion, the area has developed for the worse and somehow lost its old charm, like in so many places in Berlin. 23:21 The Domke butcher's shop is one of the few shops that have survived and gives me fond memories of back then, of the time when life was more carefree and you didn't have to worry about whether you would still be there in the next few years can pay the rent for the apartment you have lived in for over 30 years. Today I don't recognize a lot of things in my own city and I wonder whether it's even worth living here anymore, even if it's my home and it would be very difficult for me to move away.

@@pongmaster123 Possibly Berlin, but Zurich? Beautiful in many ways, but not cool and bustling. And when it comes to Berlin, I suspect it just had a sort of 'blooming period,' I have to say I find it slightly overrated, it's not like no other city has an alternative/art/creative scene. But yeah Berlins alternative and art scene does seem kind of big somehow. Many cities do not have such considerable areas dedicated to that.
you have no idea when you were not part of it. lots of berlin people came to zurich spidergalaxy to party in the 90ies, even MTV tried to get in, but didn't.
First of all for an American, an amazing tourism video on a European city! I think you genuinely spend your time here and did the city justice. A few remarks though, the video excluding Mauerpark and bits and pieces of Mitte mainly focuses on Kreuzberg-Friedrichshain. Not all of Berlin is like that. One remark which I would have loved in the video and which you might have seen in your time in the city, every district is like its own town with, it's own people.
I think all places we go to, we say "it was better when...", but it's honestly kinda cringey seeing how social media has infiltrated and made it mainstream the past 5 or so years. 11 years ago, when I first visit, and stayed for months every year after, I saw the shift. It was from a grungey place, that was still somewhat raw... very cheap, and still not on the mainstream radar. It was truly my favorite place in the world. But now, like every other great city, it has been watered down & while anyone can "be who they want"... it has attracted people who want to be cool, not people who are just themselves.
You have the exciting opportunity to find the next place that is that cool grungy original spot that is having its moment in time. This has always existed. Life is in constant change. Instead of lamenting what used to be, get excited to find what currently is.
Seeing your journey in the city of Berlin, I am convinced that Berlin is the coolest city in Europe, thank you for sharing an interesting video for us to watch,,,,
amazing piece of content for such a unique city. The analisis is very on point with great script and wonderful visuals, even the sponsorship with my dog is very well done 😄. Thank you so much for sharing ❤. I wish you all the success in the world.
This video is awesome. I was getting a lot of “checkpoint Charlie, TV tower” information from other videos. I feel like you gave a glimpse of the authentic culture. ❤
The Song „Schwarz zu Blau“ by the German singer Peter Fox describes that special atmosphere of Berlin very well. But Berlin is more than you show in your video. There are wonderful rivers, lakes and forests. And also posh and noble quarters with huge mansions in Dahlem, Lichterfelde, Wannsee etc. Regards from Berlin
Thank you very much for your somewhat different documentation. They delve a little deeper into the subject matter. I miss Berlin so much. The red vegetable with the meatball is called red cabbage. That's not sauerkraut! I already loved your Brasilia vlog. Almost nobody goes there except me. ; )
This view of the city is interesting. Lol I visit Berlin several times a year, and have honesty never spent much time in the Kreuzberg side of the city. The moral of the story is the city is so large, you can make it whatever you want it to be. There are parts of the city that you won’t see blue haired pierced folks. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Just saying, it’s a very diverse city.
You show the Kreuzberg hipster/alternative Berlin very well. However that is just one bubble, Berlin has more too it. E.g. historical architecture like on Museum island, old rich neighbourhoods like Charlottenburg, posh neighbourhoods like Prenzlauer Berg and beautiful parks like Gärten der Welt or Britzer Garten.
@@StandWithIsraelForever typical racist Israeli propaganda account. The IDF rapes and rapes and rapes, then parades their rapey soldiers as heroes on Talk Shows on public TV. It is beyond sickening.

Pointing out the issues your society wants to hide will help, no matter how annoying they are to you. You are welcome. ❤
Berliner here. Great video, thank you so much for your analysis. Just an addition to the gentrification issue: the rents have doubled over the last 10 years and people are continually being pushed out of their houses towards the outskirts. In 2021 the rent movements in Berlin organized a referendum about expropriating big housing corporations and 60% of Berliners voted yes. Unfortunately the government is not interested in implementing it because they have close ties with the corporations (which is a democratic scandal). Politics are each time more conservative, police violence against protests, massive cuts in funding for cultural projects. Free spaces are shrinking, there's more privatization. Berlin is slowly turning into London and many people sadly have to or want to leave.
I live in the suburbs - takes about i.e. an hour to get to the Alex from where I live. I personally prefer the suburb, because it takes me to the state of Brandenburg in about 15 mins by bicycle. And the HAVEL river and lake (Scharfe Lanke) is closeby.
Berliner here too, and I agree.. but hey, I'm not leaving! 😃Berlin is changing yes, but it's still the coolest city in Europe.. and by far better than London (I lived there for 11 years)
@@hwfq34fajw9foiffawdiufhuaiwfhw I'd say people under 30 for a limited amount of time, cause it is just too expensive to live inside the urban area otherwise. I had entirely different motives to move to Berlin, as I had a girlfriend in East Berlin during the cold war. There was no 'trendy Berlin' at that time, but there was East and West.
Berlin might be great if you're under 30 and want to find yourself. You can then immerse yourself in the night scene and sleep until midday. As you get older and live here, you realize that this city has a negative vibe that can catch you if you're not careful. That may also be true for other cities, but without the great arts and culture scene and the large queer community, this city would be meaningless.
Sounds very naiv to think Berlin is just cool and nice. But it fits perfect the cliche of rich Kids with academic Parents who buy them flats at Kotti or kurfurstenstreet and kicked Berliners Out of ther places. Just to cry when the Party is over. Let me have my little Schadensfreude.
Hey, im really glad this popped up in my algorithm. This channel is dope AF. Im looking forward to digging through the rest of your content. Kudos, I love this type of content.
I loved Berlin when I visited in the mid 80's to early 2000's. There was a heady mixture of art and politics with a healthy DIY ethos, loved it. When I watched your video, I also could recognise some of those things and was pleased to see it still had it's grungy creative side. However reading the comments I can see there is a familiar tale of gentrification to tell too, so thanks to the commenters for adding their valuable perspective.

It was a very shallow dive into Berlin. She has shown a tiny fraction, mostly adorned by tourists. Shown were the places which more than half the local populations actually avoids. It's the inner city. The city of Berlin has so much more to offer.
@@martinwagner4960 A deep dive does not imply someone is swimming long distance down there. It is a quick up and down, that is what I implied. Compared to other travel shows I have watched about Berlin it is a deep dive for a one episode show.
As I drove into Berlin ten years ago It reminded me very much of Detroit. Glad Vegas was playing, I stayed in a tiny room that cost a small fortune. Over the next four days, I had a blast !
Berlin is a hippie fest born out of overcorrecting of past mistakes. The content and the style of your videos is of very good quality, I am guessing this will become a much more popular channel in the future.
First time coming across your channel, this was VERY well done, shot and you're just effortless in this. I've subbed. Honestly, i've seen blogs but this has like high quality vibe to it. I've been to Berlin and although I don't like cloudy, dark, moist like places with grange like vibes, it was okay :)
Thank you, so glad you enjoyed it! I think with Berlin you have to know someone or exactly where to go, otherwise it can come off as sprawling and uninviting. I disliked my first visit years ago but this time around it became one of my favorite cities anywhere.
@@DotsonaMap You're so welcome, you're super talented. I am very outgoing, I met a few people literally the first night lol we hanged out they showed me a lot of places and I loved the history aspect of it. I went to Spain after and THAT is a vibe :) I didn't want to leave Barcelona.
We're glad you guys had such a good time in Berlin! It's an amazing city, with such a long, complicated history. There's so much to do and so much to see that no matter what type of video you make, you're not going to please everyone.Your video definitely made us feel nostalgic. Berlin will always be my home away from home (and it is quite literally Anja's home 😂). Like every city, it continues to change and evolve, both in positive and negative ways. Berlin is basically a great city. You give great insights and I recognize every part of the city. I myself lived in Berlin for 20 years, only at an even more beautiful time than it seems now. Berlin is an inspiration for visitors and when I see the pictures I get homesick. But living there is no longer beautiful. The hype remains both positive and negative. Thanks for showing.😍
I came here 16 years ago. I saw how Tourists destroy the soul of this city. Berghain was never popular until the hype. Berlin became pretentious, dirty, commercial, DANGER shiiithole.
I’m sure there are changes that aren’t necessarily for the best, but compared to many parts of the world the quality of life and level of freedom and security in Berlin is pretty damn good.

This is such a beige view of the creativity here - you're romanticising the DIY and showing an under 30 perspective of this city. Should have done more research outside of Kreuzberg and the 'ten best things to do in Berlin' websites you designed your trip around.
It’s not she showed the bright side, where are all the homeless? Where are all the berliners that are losing they apartments because of American companies like: Google, Tesla, and Amazon. People are rotten in the underground trains, and the Arab and Turkish community Fades away because u all wanna eat smash burgers instead of Döner.
as someone who doesnt feel or dress hip, berlin doesnt really appeal to me. if im honest i dont like the "style" ..i read about self expression and whatever but how come everyone looks the same ?
Ah, you can dress however you want to in Berlin, and that includes everything from pajamas to high heels and hijabs. You can wear your jack wolf skin or normcore and it’s totally ok. The video only shows techno-core. Trust me, I’m out rocking my Paris sweatshirt and sketchers here everyday. I’m free to be boring and I like that.
It’s funny, I lived in Berlin 15 years ago and visited the city since than regularly. The documentary could have also been shot back than, the Turkish market, the Berghain bouncers, Kreuzberg as the „new“ hip district - it has all been there 2010 and before already. This continuity is quite nice to see actually. The city might change a lot but the heart seems to remain the same.
@DotsontheMap Great name for a nomad/travel channel 😎😎Don't fade Belgrade, Serbia 🇷🇸 FULL of unique experiences. Way more thrilling surprise than Berlin too!
When I visited Berlin, I stayed in the northern suburb of Leegebruch. I would catch the train into the city from Oranienburg. I had the peace and quiet of more rural community but could get straight into the city centre within half an hour.

uhm ... I don't know in my op. it was poor and sexy 20 years ago, nowadays it is a hipster trap - especially nollendorf.. kreutzberg etc etc.. Plus I would not call it "poor" anymore, try buy a house in Charlottenburg for less than 300k euros... I have friends who bought a house in wittenbergplatz for 70k back in the day. But it was cool until it lasted, sure! Nowadays u wanna look elsewhere in Eu... dunno... Bucharest? If u are still around EU try looking at Eastern Europe. Tallin also... Lisbon was also great but not anymore. The cool factor lasts for 10 or 15 years then it becomes commercial. in the US as well right? I mean there was a time when the Burning man was cool... but that was a loooooong time ago ;)
An apartment 20 years ago at Wittenberg square for 70000€!???? What was that??? A 1 room apartments with toilet in the yard!??? . For this, even 20 years ago, you could buy just one "garage parking space" in Berlin in Schöneberg or Charlottenburg. In Tallinn or in the Eastern Bloc countries in general, there may have been, 🙈!
👏These first 4-6 shots (especially the foggy moon time-lapse of the Fernsehturm) are incredible! Imho they look spectacular and expertly set the mood for this city report!! Got me hooked and curious right from the start until the end. And that's how you won a new subscriber (from Berlin) ...click
Berlin may be great as a tourist attraction for those who like to throw a few pills at a rave party. For living, this city is dull, gloomy, full of passive aggression and people with beer fumes. A nightmare.
Yes. As a german, i refer to berlin as the shelter for all the disorientated peeps, no matter your socio econimic status. The egomaniac hippies are as worse as the trust fund yuppies and new rich millenials paying 70.000€ rent every year at prenzlauer berg in their 150 sqm flats. But you can get great food in berlin, vist museums and art galleries. Thats about it. Dirty shit place with a few highlights

Well, at least in my country (neighbor), everybody, when we were in our 20s, saw Berlin as super vibrant, lively city, literally: "student dream city" xD (for partying, meeting people, meeting all different hmm sub-cultures, artists, alternative bla bla bla), but after reaching 30s, we realised that for many of us, it is just rather hmm dirty city and actually not that multi-dimensional as we thought. Actually, it seems ... divided. Divided by the people who came here, having no intention learning German, expecting everybody to know English, and the German people who just ... seem like they try to live a normal life in this wild city ;) Hauptbanhof Station, which I saw first like probably 2010 and was incredibly hmm mesmerized (so big etc. :), so many floors, trains etc. ), now it's just a rather dirty (and dark - really, the light there could been better on every floor) station, with some shady people constantly trying you to sell something. Not a good impression. ps. Don't want to bash ;) but honestly, judging by the title I would prefer any central Europe capital so much more (Prague, Warsaw etc.). I mean, it's not my intention to bash some city :) - everybody has full right to love the city he/she likes :D , but I do know that it's just not for me. I always had this feeling that it has this facade of being incredibly hip, hipster, cool, open etc. but whenever i was there, i actually felt more hmm lonely than in other cities.
The documentary missed out on most of the cultural gems of Berlin such as the museum quarter, the free classical concerts outside the Brandenburg gate and even the amazing parliament building. There are so many beautiful palaces around the outskirts. Let's not forget about the thriving vegan community in Berlin.
Yeah it does feel like that it's hasn't been focused by the government to make it more interesting or impressive like other capitals but still stunning.

Curry wurst is the best street food! Lived in Berlin late 70s early 80s with Pan Am fam and recall lots of old lady's that loved Amercans ( air lift ,JFK) It seemed 50/50 with half disliking Americans and the other half loved us. Another thing that stuck was when I was 18 a friend and I came across a protest and talked with some young Germans apparently protesting American involvement in the Middle East. One of them ended up poking me in the chest saying "You should be ashamed to be an American!" It stuck because back here in the states most people seem to forget we are all still one. Here we seem to be divided but out there in the world we are all simply Americans like it or not.

that's happening everywhere buddy
@@kingmaker2603 What rubbish. Berlin was the only city in Germany where residents were exempt from compulsory military service. That's why it has always been a centre of attraction and a melting pot for people who didn't belong to the group of boring Germans.
Been living in Berlin for 10 years. Yes, lots of possibilities for self-exploration, with streets filled with lots of people who took self-exploration too far. Just spend a day on the subway and find out for yourself. It takes a toll on you. Many people borrow from their future to be here.
wow.......
Borrowing future happiness as i always say
True. You better have a firm grip on reality to survive here.
What a profund comment
Couldn't have said it better.
the Berlin you're advertising in this documentary is accurate in 2010.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts
Berlin seems like a place where trust fund kids cosplay Bohemia.
then don't go, genius
Not a lot of trust fund kids in Berlin and Bohemia is nowhere to be found. Berlin is raw, harsh, ugly, trashy and many people who lives here manages to make things beautiful and cute in all madness. It's not Bohemia -it's resilience and love.
it is exactly that place

@@d.ad.D.D.D seems like other people in this thread disagrees with you, so what is the truth

Fair! Guess we’ll have to come back and tell a different story about the city next time
@@DotsonaMap yay, another cringe story.
Wonderful. You really catched the vibe, especially with the awesome video footage all around Berlin.

This view of the city is interesting. Lol
I visit Berlin several times a year, and have honesty never spent much time in the Kreuzberg side of the city.
The moral of the story is the city is so large, you can make it whatever you want it to be.
There are parts of the city that you won’t see blue haired pierced folks. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.
Just saying, it’s a very diverse city.
Thanks for the video 📸
Thanks for watching Brian!
Why not the Muslim neighborhoods? I heard that the care the women get there in the streets is top class!

Berlin might be great if you're under 30 and want to find yourself. You can then immerse yourself in the night scene and sleep until midday. As you get older and live here, you realize that this city has a negative vibe that can catch you if you're not careful.

Actually, it seems ... divided. Divided by the people who came here, having no intention learning German, expecting everybody to know English, and the German people who just ... seem like they try to live a normal life in this wild city ;)
Hauptbanhof Station, which I saw first like probably 2010 and was incredibly hmm mesmerized (so big etc.
