The Brammo Empulse electric sport bike, starting at $16,995, is powered with a 40-kilowatt permanent magnet AC motor and 9.3-kilowatt-hour lithium ion battery capable of 100 miles per hour and 121 miles per charge in city riding.

Am I the only one who thinks electrics sound cool? It's like a ghost screamin' down the highway man!
When it was first announced, they had 3 models - the least expensive one had a 6kW battery pack and was $9995. They dropped the bottom two models because of low demand. Also, they added features that their research showed buyers wanted. Mainly, the 6-speed transmission was what ended up increasing the price and the time in development. Yes, it's expensive. Love the looks of it, though.
God, we really need a MAJOR revolution in battery technology. It's amazing how slow that area progresses compared to all of our other technological advances.
Anyone who comes up with something that's actually viable should be given a Nobel Prize and all the funding they need.
fair enough, even on a 50 cc scooter doing 33mph I've had a few near misses with drivers thinking that 20 ft is enough of a gap at a junction. and 50cc scooters can be quite loud (running wide open all the time, small silencer etc.)
I will stay with my st1300 with prices like these. Make sure to post a video once you get yours Big Baller!
That's a motor, by the way. ;) I don't think it sounds tooo bad. I actually prefer the electric whine. It turns heads!
This bike is amazing, if it was available as a cruiser with the same performance and range in the UK, I would be putting a kidney on ebay to get one ;-) I love it!! Fantastic, I have damage to my right knee and can't bend it fully otherwise the sporty stance would be everything I would ever want and need. As it stands I need a bike where my leg is almost straight, hence the cruiser preference. Great job I wish someone would take the idea up in the UK.

Saw race version at Daytona this past weekend. How does 167MPH sound. It won the electric bike race aganist a very good German entry and one from Australia. Very impressive lap times undwer 2 mins..
The Tesla Roadster of motorcycles. Like the Teslas, anyone lucky enough to manage to get one will no doubt feel they are fully satisfied - and then some. Of course Brammo also offers a budget ev cycle that performs adequately enough for non highway riding.
I understand, dude. But I still prefer the combustion engine with 4 cylinders. Sounds coolest!

HAHAHA the sound! When he set off...it sounds like a fucking R/C car, don't know what I was expecting but I almost spat my drink out with laughter.
It cost a lot to adopt that IET technology. Not to mention it's fair share of carbon fiber. The batteries are all brand new specifically for this bike. What you would paying is an early adoption price, just like Tesla roadster owners. People thought their cars would be crazy expensive but their new models are 50% cheaper base price.
And let's not forget the lack of maintenance.
With the economy as it is, I can see why you'd be disappointed, but if you can afford it any time soon, reconsider.
Belt drive might help it not sound so noisy and honestly, if you want to be covert, gas never works. I think I would be more turned on to a full size bike if it did around 150 miles despite any hill you hit.

They do say 120 mile range at city speeds. That's realistic. If you want to drive it 70 mph you're not going to get as much mileage.
Nice idea, looks and performance, but this only makes us riders more vulnerable for accidents (not being heard by other traffic).
Whats up with the pull-tabs on the side 1:26? First it was the yellow battery packs that stuck out like a sore thumb only to be replaced by the top of a six pack. designers: less is more!
nobody hears you at a junction and you get killed in an accident. there's an important reason why vehicles make noise.
and when a car company states their car gets 6L/100km or 50mpg or whatever you actually hold it against them if your car never achieves this? they are talking range in best conditions, that includes driving style. would you buy a car that said 'well, you'll get at least 5mpg, but 50 if you drive nice...'? the problem is that even with electric motor's high efficiency, battery range is still pretty poor, so its like a car that can achieve 400mpg or more, but only has a 0.25g fuel tank.

i'm betting that brambo have to use the exact same standards for testing as any other car company... if you rode it nicely you'll get close to the 100mile claim. (well, I'm only guessing here). 100wh/mile is pretty conservative really, I mean electric cars get about 250wh/mile, and most electric cycles get about 25wh'mile. even hammering my own ebike I usually get better than 40-50wh/mile, and thats riding it like I stole it. I really dont think its an unrealistic claim.
18000. And no charge plug? There are no charging stations in most the US. Or I've never seen them.
In what way besides possible top speed and distance does this get out performed by a ninja 250r? The 0-60 time on the ninja is 7.7 seconds... how is that even close to the empulse's 5 seconds? And how much faster really is the ninja at the top end? And honestly in the US where do I need to be able to go faster than 100mph? The price is steep but the cause and product warrant the price IMHO.
The bike costs more because they want to present it at a "high quality level"?
If that's the reason for the increase of price, I think I will look at the new Zero S instead.
The Zero S has nearly similar specs, no fancy "6 speed" to justify an unnecessary increased cost just to pad up their bank account, and whole lot cheaper.
100miles sounds pretty doable on 10kwh, and 100mph is doable on 40kw. what would be nice is if zinc air or lithium air batteries can be developed to be reliable. then that 100 miles becomes nearly 1000. alternatively the bike weighs half as much for about 400miles range! its kinda funny though to think I know of a guy with an electric push bike that is faster than this bike, by a big margin. range is crappy though!

Do what about it? Put in a little speaker to fake "vroom vroom" noises? It's the sound of an electric motor; not sure what you people expect.
So I have to wait at the mall or airport for 3 hours just so I can get enough charge to get home? No thanks.
1 hour 15 minutes of road time and over 3 hours of recharging HELL NO !
Why can't electric vehicle companies get serious about adding artificial, optional enginesounds? It is NOT a very difficult task.
funny thing is if its a 3ph motor you can hook a speaker up to any one phase and it will actually sound kind of like a grunty engine with no exhaust. better get a high voltage speaker though! /watch?v=MT5Ew-5ykXM&feature=plcp to get some idea of what I mean... or search for 'ebike with engine sound - test ride'. It was done as a joke, the speaker blew after a few min but still... funny to hear.
for me, it does not fully sound like the future yet, and obviously not like the old

If i have the that money i would buy it. Think about how much money you give to feed your Triumph and you will realize that this bike is a lot cheaper. :)

Actually, it is. BMW is in a fight with american courts right now because the see it as stupid. And I'm loosely quoting. Anything rolling at low speeds is going to be relatively quiet, and even at freeway speeds, the cabin noise gets so loud, your driving is more dependent on visual cues.
