    Hi Ian, As your in the deep thought process maybe plan a bit of undercover equipment storage on the north side of the nearest to the house covered yard. You already have wind and driving rain taken care of so gather up some hidden timber and 2nd hand crinkly tin sheets and make some jutty out rain protection. Also with all that land hiding behind the dung heap why not store hardcore etc. in there and leave the space next to the new bard flat, clean ready for an overspill car park.
    Well the things they make as blow up toys is amazing gives a whole new meaning to crutch.

    Move that concrete panel to the end of the lean too but not where they feed use a sheeted door there to clean out up through. Bars will.stop the calves climbing through the barriers. Clad down to the barrier top and there won't be much weather get tho then.

    Here in the South I noticed more northeasterly winds last winter 🤫. I appreciate the work is not cost effective but you cannot put a price on a contented cow. Who knows how much more weight they will put on becase of shelter. I think you are doing the right thing. At last in the winter gales you won't lie in bed feeling sorry for the cows getting wet while they eat! PS Can you not get a part grant for concrete

    • @FarmerP
      @FarmerP  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@freddeeks5496 Your right, last year I did lie in my cosy bed feeling guilty about them out in a shitty wet yard all winter. Sadly no grant aid for me here, I’m in a “low priority area” and don’t qualify for any part of the project. Without the added income from the channel, I would not be able to do it Fred. It’s you and folks like you that built this cover and the cattle and myself are very grateful, thank you. 🙂

    I still don't agree that the covered yard won't make you or the farm any money - think that over time you'll really see the financial benefit in less work, happier animals, better growth rates and things like that. And, always have to remember - aside from potential savings in fuel and/or machinery maintenance (less wear and tear), YOUR time is also worth something! People really tend to forget that sometimes. I mean, just imagine if you had to pay someone to do the things you do - just because you do most of it yourself and don't get any immediate financial compensation for it, it doesn't mean your work is really "free". That said, keeping my finger's crossed the concrete quote won't be too high and you'll get to do both yards this year - I imagine that would be a lot easier than doing it later when the cattle have been back in for the winter.

      @georgiaannbicknell6129 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes. I agree with s. m.1959 reference your time and the worth. You will have more space under roof in wet weather. Less wet feed and spoiled hay.

      @@s.m.1959 I don’t often include my own time, your right in saying I should spend less on bedding and labour, but the main driver for this project isn’t to increase production or earn more income, it’s to improve the welfare of our stock. I hope to save a dozen bales of straw a year, and an hour a day in wet weather. I suppose saving some is similar to making some, but if I crunch the numbers, it would take me about 23 years to pay for the project, which is why you folks in “You tube land” have really helped the farm out, without the income from your support, I would not be able to do it. Thank you. 🙂

    • @s.m.1959
      @s.m.1959 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@FarmerP oh I get that - you aren't doing it for the money, you do it for animal welfare (primarily). Just saying - all the other bits I and other people mentioned, that's the "unintended side effects." In any case, your humble attitude and how you continuously give credit to your viewers for their support is one of the many reasons I keep watching.
