I had a girl start chatting with me in the grocery store while I was shopping! She was really nice and I was enjoying a nice conversation with a nice stranger, but then it became clear where we were headed. An MLM pitch. She started asking questions about how self motivated I am and if Im a go-getter, talking about her great flexible job etc. I assume she figured I would say yes to her questions but I told her "Oh no, I'm actually REALLY lazy and easily distractable, I dont have any interest in killing myself to do any job, Id rather have less money and more free time". She ended up not even finishing pitching me because I assume she didn't want me on her downline 😂
It's funny obviously but it also made me REALLY sad. I was new to my area and I thought for a minute that I might be connecting with my first new friend. And now I have to wonder if anything nice she said was even true. Its really sinister and culty to me, and if I wasn't aware of the schtick, I definitely would have gravitated towards wanting a social connection!

I hate that. Your thought it was a genuine interactions, then got let down. I'm a very friendly, approachable person, to the extent that I have had strangers ask me for fashion advice, food advice, etc. completely at random. I also strike up chat waiting in lines. It grinds my gears that MLM people are using fake friendliness to fish for recruits. Maybe I should get a hat or pin that says "NON MLM."

    • @CaBobProductions
      @CaBobProductions ปีที่แล้ว

@@maryeckel9682 Same!! I'm just like that too. I'm usually wearing something like a graphic tee and have colorful hair, so if people are into that, they'll start talking to me about it. And I love that, I like that I'm approachable to others. Butttt I'm also overweight, which makes the health MLM girlies FERALLLL to pitch to. The perfect Before for their After.
Try to tell them you're content with your body and they just cant believe it, which is rude but on them and their body issues issues at the end of the day 😬

This has happened to me several times on IG, most recently it was a fellow childfree woman about my age. I thought she truly wanted to connect, as we do have several big things in common, but instead she's tried to get me to join her fitness challenges. Oddly enough, I haven't heard anything from her since I added "Not interested in your MLM" to my IG bio. I think that's personally the worst part for me....thinking someone wants to be your friend, but they really just want to sell you something.

Because I'm a makeup artist, I used to get hun messages all the time, but I put a public pinned post on my timeline saying that if anyone sent me a MLM message, they would immediately be reported and blocked. They weren't really an issue after that.

Regarding the first story, I keep thinking about James Welsh’s story about a colleague of his who used the tester bottles in their makeup store to do her makeup every day, and some bacteria or something in the lipgloss she used gave her awful scarring around her mouth. That story 3 was awesome. I love how she pointed out the undermining of her budget to pad the hun's budget. I'm surprised she got any calls after that. She made it very clear what she thought of those MLMs. She also pointed out a ubiquitous fact, which is, that women are doing this to each other. Women are the suckers to these MLM higher-ups, and it's not just sad. It undermines argument that women are capable, smart, and savvy. How is it that women fall for this so often? It would be an interresting study to see what motivates many women to turn to an MLM. I think it has something to do with feeling powerless.

"She got the car" I bet she really didn't tho, when I was in a mlm, the fine print basically says the Recipient finances the car in their name, and on months that they retain rank the MLM reimburses them the monthly payment cost of car, if they lose rank, they are fully on the hook for the car payments themselves!!! 🚗 👎

The line of the FB post that said men don't do this to each other really hit me, because they don't! I wish we could learn to work together as women if we're struggling, not use each other like this. My friends know I would always support them if they actually started a small business or didn't want to go out as a way to decrease their spending, but I will NEVER support them joining an MLM. Thank you for everything you do! ❤

I would love to see you review solar or pest control companies like Moxie, Aptive, or Vivint. They're absolutely everywhere here in Utah and the amount of money they make is insane. They basically recruit college students then send them across the country.
Other sellers in the companies try to navigate tax situations by basically setting up an LLC for yourself so that neither the seller or the companies have to pay as much taxes which is so shady! I don't have tax knowledge but I ran when my friend tried to recruit me.

Rodan and fields also encourages loaning out your full size regimens to prospective customers. We also had to build our own “mini facials” to give away, which consisted of one retinol capsule, one lip serum capsule, and a packet of a super abrasive scrub (the only sample available for purchase for most people). If I remember correctly, proper samples of other products existed but were given (or maybe available for purchase) only to higher ranking consultants, so I didn’t even have access to samples when I was in.

I was a Senegence/LipSense distributor for about a year back in 2016/2017, and while they had samples for certain products, their flagship product (LipSense lipstick) did not have samples and what samples there were, were SUPER expensive for distributors to buy, making it extremely cost-ineffective to do as a distributor. Ridiculous! I'm glad I "got out" when I did!

The story about drinking the cleaning product I know was used back home where there was a spate of kids being poisoned by drinking paraffin and other toxic stuff as people kept it in cold drink bottles or stored it in cupboards that were easily accessible by children. Companies then used it as a selling point that even if your child should drink the product they wouldn't come to any harm.

I clean houses for a living and I use the bathroom cleaner from Maleleuca because it’s very inexpensive (like $5 a month for the dozens of bathrooms I clean a week) and actually effective on soap scum. You are supposed to use it with a foaming sprayer to reduce the amount of product that gets in the air. Even so, I can’t just spray a shower and start cleaning without breathing it in and coughing, I have to wait a minute for all the stuff in the air to settle. I do like that it’s concentrated and I can add as much or as little water as I need, but it’s not “safe” to ingest or breath.
I don’t love any of the other products they sell and even I can’t purchase $75 a month in cleaning supplies. No one can. About once a year, I just sign up, buy a dozen bottles of shower cleaner and a few new mixing bottle nozzles and then cancel the membership. But, I can’t imagine a regular household even needing to spend $75 once a year.

I did have a membership for the last 6 months and recently cancelled it to do the exact same. When I cancelled it, the girl I was signed up under immediately messaged me asking why I cancelled. I told her I’d probably just place an order once a year or when needed then cancel my membership- boy was she PISSED. So now I won’t be buying at all 😌

When I was looking for new cleaning products being able to drink it was a selling point for me because that makes me feel better using them around my pets. They are so small and what is safe for me might be harmful for them. Things like strong smells/ essential oils. I also have a history of wanting to un-alive myself and had a plan to mix bleach and ammonia. The third reason is because the less harmful it is to people, the more eco-friendly it tends to be. There is a market for it. But it's niche. I recommend blue land, clean cult, Ms. Meyers, or better life cleaning products.

You want to hear unsanitary, in LipSense, they pass around tubes of lip gloss to try, everyone using the SAME DOEFOOT APPLICATOR! Ewwwww! No wonder I hear nothing about it anymore in the post-Covid world. My old neighbor sold Arbonne and kept hitting me up to use her sample kits. I HATED them. One was like rubbing Crisco on my face, it was so overly emollient, and when I said it didn't work, she gave me the acne kit and OMG it stripped my face, it hurt!

    • @KitKat10281

I was a LipSense distributor several years ago, and i always bought the disposable applicators off Amazon and these little "rings" you could drip the product into from the tester bottles, so i never contaminated my actual testers. It cost me more, but the idea of sharing testers disgusted me, despite the company's claims that the alcohol in it would kill any bacteria/viruses. I have a medical background, and I really don't think they were telling the 100% truth about the "sterility" of tester-sharing!

Hannah, I am SO GLAD that you talked the business model of Posh Mark and its well-disguised similarities to MLM's: I LOVED the app when I first started. It was fun, I met some great people who instantly became "friends", and the love bombing (Hey, Girl/Hun! You're amazing! 😊🤗❤️😘) I felt part of a close-knit social community whose members encouraged and cared for one another (I loved trading, & over time, a small group of like-minded "Closet Keepers" became my core source of communication. It was great for awhile--I learned so much about optimizing my selling potential, & we shopped each other's closets and just paid the shipping costs (plus the 20% cut PM took) for huge boxes of goodies. I soon began to notice many similarities between PM & MLM businesses: I was spending my own money on items just to to sell/trade, & even when I made a sale, I wasn't making a profit. As you mentioned, the PM culture involves including cute, engaging "Thank You" cards & adding extras/gifts with every sale, and the time spent just packaging shipments, along w/ the costs of packing materials (bubble wrap, tissue paper, multiple sizes of plastic & organza bags, boxes, packaging tape, stickers) all hemorrhaged from my bank account, as well as wasted HOURS of my days spent photographing each item in a creative way (another strong "recommendation" by PM) and writing long, detailed descriptions for every post that included measurements, product histories (adding that "personal touch" to give a story to the item, making it a special piece that worth the asking price (which had to be inflated due to the shipping costs & 20% fee that PM immediately took). PM also required (it doesn't do so in every case now) that you offer every potential buyer discounted shipping, so there was NO WAY you weren't going to pay. AND the site requires that you offer a discount from your listing price every time a potential customer indicates interest in any item. It all began to seem VERY shady to me: Because of PM's fees, mandatory discounts, & packaging presentation "guidelines", Sellera are compelled to over-price their items, knowing that a huge chunk of their earnings will immediately be pocketed by the platform. And PM constantly pulls both Sellers & Buyers in w/ level "incentives" like becoming a "Posh Ambassador" & sending curated lists of items chosen "just for you". Oh! And the rating/payout plan! Even if an item you sell is shown to be delivered (tracking info. is available for all sales & purchases), you have to wait 4 days to receive your funds--UNLESS the customer rates the item prior to that. If you're a Buyer, you are expected to (1) rate your purchase on a 5-star scale, THEN write an additional "comment"--which you quickly learn should be detailed, heart-felt, & chock-full of love bombs & emoji's. PM actually calls them "Love Notes", & they are part of the criteria to become an "Ambassador" (and they WILL remind you to add them to every rating--& they're counting). The social aspect is particularly insidious & keeps people "in the community"--even when it's obvious that they're losing money. Relationships are made that come w/ the perks of real friendships: You encourage one another, share personal details & life-events, trade from each other's closets, and joke about your mutual shopping addictions...until it isn't a joke anymore. I was accumulating a house full of cardboard boxes, bubble wrap, & tissue paper from constant deliveries that I wouldn't dispose of "because I'll use them". I also had a growing mountain of items I neither wanted nor needed that I had either traded for then didn't like, or bought on impulse w/ funds in my PM acct. (Another way they keep your money in their hands is giving you the option to have your earnings deposited directly into your site acct. instead of your bank, so it almost seems like "free money" to spend on the site. They even show you a little transaction statement showing that no money is coming from your bank account for the sale, making your purchase more exciting by almost appearing to be free. I would trade for items that I knew could be used in trading with a different person who may have had an item listed that I just HAD to acquire. Within my small trading community, cliques eventually (& inevitably) formed, rumors flew, & people began to pull some SUPER-shady ish: They would lie, cheat, & manipulate to get the items they (or their PM BFF) wanted. They would "forget" to include items that had been part of a trade w/o offering to ship it separately, or, instead of confirming that all items were accounted for prior to finalizing and shipping a trade package, they would send an insincere, flippant, cheerfully-worded note in the box claiming that (whoops!) they hadn't been able to locate the item you chose, or that it had broken, or they had traded it to someone else who had dibs on it and just totally forgot. These were often expensives items traded for an item of equal value, and since PM doesn't investigate trades (nor does it encourage them despite allowing the option), you are simply, well, SOL in this situation. SO, if the offender offers or agrees to do so, you either negotiate a substitute (which is NEVER what you'd otherwise choose) or take the loss (usually ending the trading partnership immediately, of course) once you realize that you had been manipulated through a calculated process that resulted in a valuable item being stolen from you by a "friend". No remorse, no acknowledgement of intentionally committing a hostile act (& a crime)--just an instant block to keep you from being able to leave negative comments on their page or warn others. Fortunately, this happened just a few times, but once should have been enough. There were red flags EVERYWHERE, and it began to significantly affect my relationships outside of PM, deplete my finances, hoard hours of time I could have spent doing ANYTHING else, completely turn my small house into a space with no discernable floor, furniture, or counters--just paths wide enough for walking made by shoving vast piles of PM fallout to either side (I closed my "closet" months ago, & I am STILL working through it all. Worstly (for me), I evolved in small, slow increments in ways that were carefully, deliberately designed to easily dismiss as "overthinking" when my intuition would prompt me to observe, assess, & recognize the existence of threats to my well-being that I knew to be real, proven, predictable, & avoidable. "Don't trust this person"..."This platform grossly overcharges its users while "strongly encouraging" its Sellers to personally "invest" in "their businesses" w/ a full & constant inventory of thank-you cards, stickers, organza & sealable plastic bags of all sizes, raffia, jewelry boxes of all sizes, bubble mailers, bubble wrap, tape, tissue paper, packing paper, a large assortment of (all brand-new & individually sealed, of course) face masks, lip balm, skincare samples, jewelry, organic tea, decorative pens, etc. for gift bags that were to be included w/ every order, in addition to the detailed, heartfelt card--All intended to convey gratitude to the customers & build relationships (aka lay groundwork for repeat business) via the specific use of even more "things" than they expected to receive. Everything is expressed with a tangible, touchable object that is intended to make "abundance ", "happiness", "gratitude", "generosity", "friendship", & "sincerity" synonymous w/ this one-stop wonder: "Posh Mark". And it works. Where PM exhibits yet another aspect of MLM's is its profiting by charging "Independent Contractors" ("IC") to use its "product" (the website) 20% of every purchase made from an endless supply of inventory FREELY PROVIDED to the company by unpaid IC's who are also increasing PM's profits even more by buying into the lie that they will be online business owners who just happen to operate on PM's site. Once convinced, the IC's are eagerly spending their OWN MONEY for all the supplies required to make their business successful (the criteria for such having been helpfully established & distributed by PM itself, eliminating any quesswork). The website layout, photo style guide, package presentation, level recognition system, marketing strategies, business practices, mandatory 20% payment to PM for every product both provided to and sold for the Company by its IC's, and, yup, PM's RECRUITMENT INCENTIVES are concepts that new & experienced Sellers alike are "strongly encouraged" to adopt as standard operating policies for the lucrative personal businesses they definitely own all by themselves under the umbrella of PM (along with the lie that PM is simply a helpful business consultation tool that provides resources for them, the business owners.)🙄 And when you leave PM (IF you CAN manage to get its claws out of your life), all your "colleagues" and BFF's disappear--POOF! I would argue that PM has every trapping of an MLM save for the upline/downline system, and I'm not completely convinced that it doesn't utilize a covert, well-disguised form of it. It perpetuates a cult-like atmosphere that keeps people emotionally tethered. It profits by attracting Independent Contractors to provide its marketing, supplies, and inventory, and its best customers are its Sellers. Hannah, I think Posh Mark is a duck.

With so many of these MLM's claiming medical solutions, have any of them been sued because of those claims? For example, claiming oils are better than taking prescription pills for mental health & that person ends up killing or committing suicide. I'm sure the people who love Hannah can give better examples than I can. Believe it or not, I've never been approached by a boss babe or gotten a "Hi Hon" email.

See that’s one of my biggest pet peeves I don’t buy products solely on brands I buy what works for me. Such as my cleaner, toner, Serum and moisturizer are all different brands also I change up for works for me. I have extremely sensitive and dry skin that I have to be picky on what works I wish I didn’t cause yea honestly it would be so much easier but that’s why I do love ULTA

Can I just say- NEVER use even the testers you see in lying about a store. Literally, never. The employees don't have time to monitor them and people do weird, gross things (like put an entire tube of lipstick in their mouth, dry it off on their shirt, and place it back. Yes, I've seen it all.) The only time I will ever use a tester is when it's fully controlled by an employee. It's not out for anyone to use, it's touched only by the employee, and none of the nozzles or dispensers ever come in to contact with my skin or theirs.

My upline encouraged me to use full size products as samples in Arbonne as well. She pitched it to me as a way to help hit my PV each month, and it was only after leaving I realized it was also for her to hit her QV goals. I let close friends and family use mine but if I was giving it out to anyone who I wasn't really close with I would give them one of my ridiculously expensive samples 🤪

MLMs have always reminded me of school fundraisers. Beg your friends, family, and coworkers to buy overpriced junk that they don't need and could get elsewhere for better quality and less money. And they'd always gather us in the cafeteria or gym to give a presentation about how awesome all the prizes were. They'd tell us how you should get your parents to bring the catalog to work and church, and how to safely go door to door. The presentation would get me all hyped up for prizes that were just as junky as what they were trying to get me to sell.
