  • Based on the Steven Spielberg film, the musical "Catch Me If You Can" reimagines the true life story of (now former) con man Frank Abagnale, Jr., as a 1960s TV spectacular, boasting a soulful Motown-with-a-shot-of-Sinatra score by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. Aaron Tveit, Norbet Leo Butz, Kerry Butler, Tom Wopat and Rachel de Benedet head the cast at the Neil Simon Theatre.

In my personal opinion, the score alternates between pleasant and bleh. Everyone makes goo goo eyes at Aaron Tviet but in reality the musical's score is really nothing too exceptional. Some songs go somewhere, and others just kinda tread water with no real reason to exist. Butter Out of Cream is a cringy song.

Butter Outta Cream is definitely a weird one. Some musical songs you can listen to whenever, but this one is not it. It only works to tell the story. I absolutely agree that the score is very hit and miss. The only songs worth mentioning are Live In Living Color, Seven Wonders, Goodbye and the one NLB sings (can't remember the name). Jet Set is appealing to the eye in terms of choreography, but the music itself is average too.
Aaron definitely carried this show, and he did a magnificent job at it, but he can't save the music. Loved his acting, dancing and singing. Loved the story too, but the music was really boring me at certain times. I skip over Fly Fly Away every single time I rewatch the show.

Butter Out of Cream is the whole reason Frank Jr struggles to stop stealing. Because he doesn’t want to be the first mouse

This isn't hate or disdainful but as handsome and talented as Mr. Tveit is he doesn't seem to carry the whole show charisma. Also, he doesn't sound his best here. I think it's the score. He sounded much better in "Next To Normal" Maybe some of the music was written around his voice? Yes. I know he was the lead in "Grease" live but I still don't he just WAS THE PART. Anyway, I hope he continues to succeed.

@bicth !!!!!!!! That's interesting to know about that note. Kerry Butler, who was also in this how seemed to have some pitch issues as well.

I actually think he did a wonderful job. He carried the whole show nicely, and I've heard him sing Live In Living Color, Seven Wonders and Goodbye multiple times and he always smashes it. I've only heard him go flat in Goodbye twice out of all of the videos I've seen, and it's a hecking hard song. LILC was brutal with the choreography, all that jumping. Have you seen the studio recording? He sounds like he was born to sing that song.
However, the overall score was kinda meh. Some songs are really boring and random. No matter how good of a job Aaron did, he couldn't save that. But you could really see how much he loved this show, his acting was incredible, he danced and sang his heart out. Did you know that in the entire 6 months of the show running, the Frank understudy didn't go on even once? Aaron was always on. He's a beast.
(and on the note of Grease Live, I know he faced quite a lot of critisism, some of it a bit too harsh, but I loved him as Danny. In fact, I like his Danny more than Travolta's? I know, controversial. But it's actually how I found him. As a huge fan of Grease, I was very sceptic about the live adaptation, but I thought he did such an amazing job as Danny that I had to check him out)

@@DeeFightingDreamer Wow! That is such a cool and knowledgeable response. You've converted me to Team Aaron. I actually didn't love Travolta in 'Grease' and Aaron did do it 'LIVE' and he is a MUCH BETTER singer so... I appreciate your insight and it's helpful to hear your opinion on the score. Seems like he did the best he could and gave EVERYRTHANG! ❤️‍🔥🦋😇🙌🏾
