Then the premise of the roast is that you don’t know who you’ll be paired against to roast, so improvising and going off superficial stuff like looks is almost a requirement. The comedians shouldn’t have agreed to this and they defend the shows (so some fault is on them), but Dennis basically set them up to fail with how he’s running these things.

So here’s my thing. I was a fan of Def Noodle’s’s’s when he had the cat ears and the goofy glasses and the cross-eyed reactions to stupid. When he doffed the character and promised he was dedicating himself full time to standup comedy, I was cautiously optimistic. I’m a longtime fan of standup; just recently remembered that an “Evening at the Improv” was a club I used to go to and not just the name of a show. The shows I saw went so fast and so funny I can barely recall any of the jokes. Even an actual guy I knew, who had a regular gig I only saw once, had so much funny going so fast I could only grab and remember one of his jokes (The Beatles as a surfer group. Big hit: Hey Dude.) What I remember from Def N’s “comedy” show was basically a bunch of F bombs, some of which got him banned off a platform bc they were even worse than the usual F bombs; and a whole lotta references to, how shall I say, eatpussy-eatpussy-eatyomamaspussy-Detroit-pussy. Also the camera work was just nonexistent. Dennis? Hon? What you are calling a “comedy club”? I’m calling “the room off the janitor’s closet at my junior high.” “..with a brick-paper backdrop.” I am more disappointed than entertained. Honestly.

On comedy central UK the roast battles were no holds barred but had black, queer, disabled and other underrepresented groups. Some of it was brutal but the funniest thing I have ever seen. It was on a completely even footing. When you can watch a stand up comedian with cerebral palsy left unable to speak because she's laughing so hard at a joke someone made about her drooling you're doing it right. This is not that in any way.

Def Noodles sounds like a crabby teacher, "I won't move on until I have everyone's attention" (I say as a teacher). Just saying, it's a minimally efficient tactic and is always a mood dampener. Except that teachers know not to shove their students when they get frustrated. And there is a lot of potential to ease tensions and de-escalate situations with comedy, but it requires skill and practice.

So here’s my thing.
I was a fan of Def Noodle’s’s’s when he had the cat ears and the goofy glasses and the cross-eyed reactions to stupid. When he doffed the character and promised he was dedicating himself full time to standup comedy, I was cautiously optimistic. I’m a longtime fan of standup; just recently remembered that an “Evening at the Improv” was a club I used to go to and not just the name of a show. The shows I saw went so fast and so funny I can barely recall any of the jokes. Even an actual guy I knew, who had a regular gig I only saw once, had so much funny going so fast I could only grab and remember one of his jokes (The Beatles as a surfer group. Big hit: Hey Dude.)
What I remember from Def N’s “comedy” show was basically a bunch of F bombs, some of which got him banned off a platform bc they were even worse than the usual F bombs; and a whole lotta references to, how shall I say, eatpussy-eatpussy-eatyomamaspussy-Detroit-pussy.
Also the camera work was just nonexistent. Dennis? Hon? What you are calling a “comedy club”? I’m calling “the room off the janitor’s closet at my junior high.”

On comedy central UK the roast battles were no holds barred but had black, queer, disabled and other underrepresented groups. Some of it was brutal but the funniest thing I have ever seen. It was on a completely even footing. When you can watch a stand up comedian with cerebral palsy left unable to speak because she's laughing so hard at a joke someone made about her drooling you're doing it right.
This is not that in any way.

I feel it's important to mention that Salvo was invited there specifically by Dennis. Not just by his "haters pull up or shut up" comment, but like Salvo individually was invited.
