Interesting, this is a type of orchid I have not yet acquired so now I have a wee bit of knowledge for when I eventually do. BTW your balck and white cat was supervising kitchen time. He/she reminds me of our black and white girl who once ran our well dry by tapping on the touch faucet to watch the water go down the drain. We no longer have a touch faucet, we do still have the cat LOL
you should try growing your epidendrums in soil, my reedstem grows like a weed in soil in south florida also i just repotted it and all of the roots were healthy in the soil. Just make sure you buy good quality fluffy potting soil
We growth these things out here (in Southern California), either in pots or even the ground, usually with just a mix like cymbidiums w/potting soil. Often never repotted (since they can do in a soil mix.) I suspect your plant is just suffering from the scale. As Michael noted earlier, these things grow in clumps and spread by keikis more often than not. AFAIK, they are the most terrestrial of the Laeliinae. Old plants tend to end up not looking pretty.
I think this might be just what my 2 Epi's need. Both have good media and heaps of keikis. One has flowered in the past, but not recently and I just can't get the other to bloom at all. Ive moved them into a higher light position (gradually) they are both growing new leaves but some blooms would be nice sometime. Short sharp shock is due I think!
@@YnseSchaap Oh no!😄 It wasn't anything bad, honestly! The only thing I can think of was one word that might have upset their algorithm. My comment said you would need something to hack your way out of the room as your plants would grow really well with that light you have. The item I mentioned began with m ended in e and had and a, c, h, e, t in the middle. YT obviously didnt like that word. I wonder if they will contact me to tell me off. I wonder how jungle explorers would describe trying to move through the jungle on a YT video, "I moved through the jungle gently pruning the overgrown trees and bushes as I travelled towards the river".....🤣

@@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai I reckon it was that 'm' word that set YT off. Probably has connotations given the world we live in these days. Never crossed my mind it could a YT no no! Ah well all good now. Thanks.
Hi Roger I see both you and Ed are beginning to use coco husk in your mixes, do you think that most plants will grow in it as there could be a shortage of bark. Or just keep to certain types.
It can be used for most things but it does hold more water than bark so stays wet that bit longer. As long as that is ok for the orchid type, then it will be fine.
They grow fully terrestrial here in Florida (or in whatever). They tend to have a spreading habit as canes will generally flop over after they flower and keikis will spring up and take root.
It took Elvis almost 4 minutes to decide if he should eat or not 🤣
They have a special breakfast each day when I get up. I think he thinks if he sits there long enough, a 2nd special breakfast may appear?
@@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai Mine do that too 😁
...THANK YOU ROGER'S ORCHIDS🤗...
You're welcome.
My epidendrum has a penchant for aerial roots 😆
Thanks for sharing
You're welcome.
Your Epidendrum are thick and big cane.nice repotting.I'm not able to make them bloom yet.maybe some day.
They are often found growing in places where they get some direct sun - so try a higher light position.
@@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai Thanks.I will try to put more light for them.

My plant in the yard has 20 foot long hard white keikis. Trying to propogate. Can I cut them off? They're so messy! 😂
All of my epidendrums are growing in soil. I recently potted a lot of keiki’s. I have been very lucky with red and purple blooms, none in orange
This variety is one of the best 'oranges' I've seen.
It looks happy now
Thanks.
Could the old plant not still grow new roots???

They do get 'untidy' as they get more mature.
I've always loved this Epidendrum of yours, if it grows another keiki, would you consider selling it to me please? Much love Ju xxx
I'm hoping it grows from the base rather than puts out keikis but if one appears, you're welcome to it.
Nice repot 😁
Thanks.

what is the difference between coco husk and coco peat?
Coco-peat is crushed/shredded coco-husk which is chunks.
My epi is about to bloom but the leaves do look dehydrated. Do you think I should check the roots??? Thanks
Orchids will not thrive for long without good roots.
@@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai It seemed to recover. All is good, thanks so much
Nice repot🪴👍🏻
🐈😄couldn’t make decision what to do next😺
So ,no worries about loosing flower spikes after cutting roots?🤔
I've never lost spikes due to repotting.
@@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai thanks 🌸
