My name is Bre. I took two years of small engine repair at the local college. When I left school, I fell into a wonderful job at a local small engine shop where I worked the counter for a couple years. In 2010 my husband and I opened up our own small engine shop in central Arkansas where I am able to work alongside my family and best friends. We saw over 2,000 pieces of small engine equipment every year, and answer 1,000's of small engine questions. We specialize in brands such as Briggs and Stratton, Kohler, Echo and Shindaiwa, but work everyday on MANY other brands like Stihl, Husqvarna, Honda, Craftsman, Remington, Red Max, Troy Bilt, Scag, Bad Boy, Hustler, World Lawn, Poulan, Mantis, Etc.. Hopefully, my experience I share, will save you Time, Money and Frustration in the future!

$4.3 million split between 116 people, not even figuring that lawyer fees will consume the majority of that amount; is only a one time payment of roughly $37,000 per person. Their pension from 1984 would have cost John Deere exponentially way more than that over the decades, so in the eyes of the John Deere bean counters this is actually a huge win for John Deere.

When I was a student at St. Edward’s University, my economics professor told us, “The sole reason a corporation exists is to increase shareholder wealth.” Wrap your head around that and everything gets explained. Investors expect to earn a profit for taking a risk. That is the core of free enterprise and when I worked for SLB, I engaged in the discount stock purchase program (becoming a shareholder myself) and also the profit sharing plan. I worked for SLB for 42-1/2 years and my risk taking paid off.

@Hugo-Hernandez it didn't my father's. They did change his medical coverage. That amounted to a decent cut.
He told me one time that since GE was such an old company and one of the first to have a pension plan, that GE's pension was self-funding. Meaning that the interest would cover the expenses. He said the problem was that the company kept finding ways to dip into the pension.
When he retired, I went to his retirement dinner at GE. A Union spokesman told all the retirees that the average life span of a retirees was 7 years. He said, "Some live more and some live less." He went on to encourage everyone to stay active.
Kind of crazy to work to retirement and only have 7 years.

They let go service reps in the same way. When I started with them in 1989, it was a family owned company. Everyone from the CEO down were on a first name basis. We were valued employees. Once the last family member retired, CEOs came in that had no experience in our business. The quality of the product nosedived. I was at our local Lowe's yesterday. Struck up a conversation with a guy looking at mowers. He was looking to replace an old Deere Z turn. He was looking at the Ariens and the Toro Z turns. He asked my opinion and I gave it to him. Stay away from Deere and Craftsman. The Ariens 52" deck with the Kawasaki or the Toro Time Cutter with the 52" deck and Kawai engine. Both very close in price. I don't know what he choose.

This is nothing new. I get the nostalgia factor of JD but guess what, shareholders are all that matter, and has been that way since the early 80's. This is capitalism 101, pay less for labor, costs, charge more for the product. Shares go up, CEO gets a bonus, wash and repeat.

Said this before, it bares saying again: when ANY US company lays off or fires its workers and moves to another country to hire cheap labor, they then havta import that product back into the USA to sell...import tax them to the point that it would cost the exact same amount to import that unit into the United States to sell as it would have to have just built/manufactured it here in the 1st place. When there becomes zero gain for a company to go where cheap labor and cheap materials are, guess what, they wont do it.

my lil ole 40k tractor couple years old wouldn't move and I had to take it to JD to be fixed right about the time I needed to cut spring hay, Jd said if I brought it to them it would be 3 weeks before they could even look at it ,which by that time my hay crop is over mature and lost most of its value, $650 just to plug it in to the diagnostic laptop and another $650 to replace 2 sensors. So $1300 and 3 weeks later I was finally able to start cutting hay

"Not enough demand here in America"? Who would be their biggest customer and how is moving their manufacturing offshore going to help with that? This has nothing to do with "demand" in America and has everything to do with cutting costs, while slapping their biggest customer base in the face.

As our economy tanks, it’s no wonder why Deere is doing this preemptive action. But it’s confusing when they claim it’s due to declining market demand for large farm equipment.
Then moving operations to Mexico and building another manufacturing facility. Of course cheap labor, far less government regulations and most likely, no labor unions to deal with which may lead to substandard working conditions. They could use an attrition process and temporary layoffs here and hopefully the market for Deere equipment will come back after the farming down turn is corrected. Employees have mortgages, families and health insurance needs.
A little humanity could go a long way at John Deere corporate.

Presidents are temporary, tax codes are forever. As long as the US has the worst tax code on the planet, companies will keep moving overseas. If JD can't sell in the US, they probably would end up just fine. And yes, Obamacare is a tax. 30,000 per year per worker to provide insurance is a huge problem.
