  • TABLEAU VS POWER BI // Tableau and Power BI have a lot of similarities when you look at them. But if you’re looking for a tool to implement in your business or want to learn data visualization, you might not be sure which one to pick. We’ll look at Tableau vs Power BI so you can understand how they compare.
    Data visualization is rapidly growing in popularity and with it has come multiple platforms to make analysis easy even in the absence of knowing a programming language.
    Let’s look at the similarities and differences of Tableau vs Power BI. We’re going to look at 6 criteria in this comparison. These are:
    • availability / use
    • ease of learning & using
    • quality of data visualizations
    • performance - or how does it handle large datasets
    • data sources
    • cost / ease of setup

      @@shubhankarchamnikar3314 I am a current reporting and data analyst. I have subscription for both DataCamp and DataQuest to enhance my knowledge for SQL and Python. Base on my experience, it depends on the project that you work on. My project deals with sensitive data and they dont want anyone to use Python because of fear of third party app's leakage. My PM does not believe much in technology. Most of the time I use Excel to store and organize data. Tableau comes in handy for data transformation for visualization. Its funny that I am the only understand the relational data concept in the project. I have a chance to talk to a FTE of the biggest social media. he told me that excel is still being used heavily in his team and they try to move on to SQL. The process is not easy because not everyone have the basic understanding. In the end, the employer hires you to get the job done so Its better to start with popular tool so you can communicate with the team. Anything more advanced like SQL or Python will add more value to the table later on. Its my two cents

      I think it is correct to say that Tableau can handle more data in the application itself - you can store/save/have access to larger data sets but it is true that PowerBI may have more options for connections to certain Microsoft house products that allow for integration of more data. I think this video was focusing on these platforms as visualization tools and ultimately Tableau is really much better on that front.

      I think on the visualization front, Tableau is just the best tool. Tableau can easily produce much more aesthetically pleasing and useful visualizations that make for a seamless user experience when integrated into Dashboards - PowerBI is clunky and not comparable in this way.

      I agree with tou here, Kirill. The beautiful integration with MS teams is also very nice. Tableau makes nicer visuals, sure, but they are harder to share and cost 6x power bi and don’t embed as well.

    • @andrewbarlow7985
      @andrewbarlow7985 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I completely disagree with her assumption as well. There are many ways to optimize the vertipaq engine in Power BI to handle billions of rows. For real-time data the direct query import mode will write queries back to the data source, which will be fast or slow depending on the data storage latency. You can also aggregate fact tables by different data granularities to reduce the size of the model. Overall the vertipaq engine in Power BI does a good job at compressing rows of data, but depending on the number of columns it can slow the model. As long as you only include columns used in the model and your data source connections fit the business case, Power BI is a very powerful tool for big data.

  • @ericet19

    Thank you for this, more then 2 years ago I chose Power BI. It was the right tool for me. The first thing for me was Power BI did not cost anything to have on the Desktop to learn. Tableau on the other hand wanted $$$ to download and learn. Paying for a tool to be able to learn it just does not make sense to me. After companies are moving from Excel to Power BI. Microsoft is doing a great job with Power BI. So for me, Power BI is the winner and with the Power BI Online service and all the different data source connectors it’s a great tool and getting better every single month with each update.

    Very good information.
    I started using Tableau a couple years ago and found it very easy to start using off the bat. About 5 months ago I started working with Power BI as well. At first, I found it a little clunky compared to the elegance of Tableau. Both have great features. After using Power BI, I think I honestly like it a little better than Tableau now. To me, the DAX language it uses is more robust and expansive than what is included in Tableau. When I started working with Power BI, I found myself thinking, 'well it doesn't have this feature or ability like Tableau' only to find that it does in fact.
    I do agree with the sizes of datasets that each can handle - Tableau can work with hundreds of thousands or even millions of records with aplomb. However, Power BI is able to have a live connection to SharePoint list data, something that still requires using an Extract in Tableau.

      I don't know enough about them to give an opinion. There are dozens - likely hundreds or thousands - of similar smaller operators offering more boutique solutions like they offer. Some are great and some aren't. I rarely recommend something that niche be a primary focus to learn unless you know the industry or company you're in/want to be in uses it.

  • @jesse6327
    @jesse6327 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Tableau is probably easier to use right off the bat for a non-technical user who wants to create some data visualizations. I work with both. Tableau, now owned by Salesforce, is an expensive product. Power BI on the other hand is free, and you don't need to have a subscription to use the Desktop version of the software. Power BI is much more powerful than Tableau from my perspective, because the DAX language is much richer and extensive than Tableau. I used to think there were certain features in Tableau that simply didn't exist in Power BI, such as LOD expressions. But there are; they are just called something different and coded slightly differently. As far as Tableau vs. Power BI in visualization choices, I have to disagree Jenn. For example, the clunky way to have to create a simple donut chart in Tableau is insane. Whereas Power BI includes both pie and donut charts. Plus, you can easily download additional visualizations, whereas with Tableau you're pretty much stuck with what you have, unless you're willing to pay.

    • @TheCareerForce
      @TheCareerForce  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm familiar with cognos but haven't used it myself. There are plenty of companies that use cognos though. One of the biggest differentiators between cognos and tableau or power BI is the entry cost for a company to set up cognos is usually much higher. So in general, you're more likely to see it in larger, established organizations that tend to have a lot of money to spend on their IT infrastructure. If that sounds like the type of industries that you'd like to be in, stick with cognos. Once you learn an interactive tool like this, other ones tend to be easy to pick up on so you could add on tableau or power BI skills later on.

    I do not agree with Tableau being better than Power BI for large data sets. When the connection is live vs import, it depends on how the underlying DB or datalake is implemented, how fast is that to query. But when it comes to import I found that Power BI is snappier, any filtering and slicing applied on the dashboard results in quick change to the visualizations.

  • @marketgrunt
    @marketgrunt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I'm BI app agnostic, However, I'm curious about the comment Power BI is slower and less able to handle data sets in the millions of row range. For me, this would be a key differentiating factor, and ultimately why businesses would prefer one system over another. But, it's not what I have experienced. I Import tables that are hundreds of millions of rows and have DAX queries which operate over these tables that take less than a few seconds. Further, from what I've experienced, Power BI, meets performance requirements, has a more diverse and integrated eco-system (Power Query, Power BI Online, Power Automate, PowerApps, SharePoint, Teams, Office365) and costs less.
    And yes, Tableau's visuals are better but, when clients want data in a table or, export to Excel, then visualization is not as high a factor as some would have us believe.

  • @marshal115
    @marshal115 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    I must say the description about Performance of Power BI is quite misleading because Power BI can handle trillion of rows if the data model has been properly set. Tableau is trying hard on handling larger data sets, aka the transition from single data table to Data Modeling, relational database, while power BI has been the emperor of this field for decades. If the performance of Power BI is slow for let’s say, 10M rows, then it should either be attributed to wrong design of Data Model or poor DAX syntax, the Power BI language, written by the beginners. After all, it’s all about the cardinality of the dataset that defines the performance of the model.

As both tools have in memory columnar database in built, they would both perform same. The additional benefit of using Power BI is that it is easy to move from self service to corporate BI, Data Lake Integration, Semantic Modelling etc. well supported in PBI. Overall, Power BI Data Models can be accessible in other tools as well like Tableau, Qlik, Excel etc.
