    Happy July! If you're spending any time outdoors this summer (or ever, really), make sure to cover those tattoos!

  • @Hanniebones
    @Hanniebones 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Another helpful tip... if you have a new tattoo in the summer and you want to be able to still dress cool, but can't slather it in sunscreen just yet, wear a UV protecting compression sleeve over it in just a size too big (so it's not actually compressing) Absolute life saver!

    • @Inkademic
      @Inkademic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This. Just cover the thing (compression, aside) and that's all that matters.

    I live in New Zealand, during summer the ozone hole over Antartica gets bigger, and, yeah, we have no ozone layer. Sunburn in 5 minutes.

    • @Inkademic
      @Inkademic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Awful, right? I live in the southwest of the US and, while the UV danger here is really high, at least it's too hot to stay out in it for long. 😅 (I can't believe I'm painting that as a positive)

    Just noting that UVA rays can penetrate clothing, so it’s worth it to look into UVA protective clothing!

    • @Inkademic
      @Inkademic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very true, thanks for mentioning it! I did forget to say that in the video. A dry, white t-shirt has a typical SPF of about 7, so thicker fabrics or fabrics made specifically for UV protection are useful for high exposure.

    I have burned a new tattoo on a hot overcast day, I had a long sleeve jacket on mostly but took it off for short periods for a little relief during cloud cover. There is small blisters in some areas and some lines appear raised, any advice?

    • @Inkademic
      @Inkademic  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yikes! Well, based on the research I did and what I shared in the video, if it were me I'd just keep up with the moisturizing, try not to let any clothes rub up against it (the abrasion surely couldn't help), use a cool, clean compress if necessary, and take an anti-inflammatory. It sounds like your skin is just angry and depending on how it heals you may need some touch-ups but that's really just a guess. That's the trouble with overcast days: they can be much more dangerous for UV damage.

    really love your channel, man. very informative & as well giving a scientific approach and not just passed info from one of your buddies. LOL with that being said! I read somewhere that fluorescent light can also cause some fading? Is there any scientific proof? Thanks!

    • @Inkademic
      @Inkademic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My inclination is to say there's no reason florescent lighting would be any more specifically tattoo-damaging than other light on the visible spectrum (which is to say, really, not at all). Would need to confirm, though.

    I sold an item to a guy off marketplace the day after I took my Saniderm off my arm. I wore a longsleeve shirt with a sweater over top because I keep reading that UV rays penetrate through clothing. His e-transfer wasn’t working and I ended standing there in the sun for an hr to fix his damn phone so that he could e-transfer me. Is that bad? I’m feeling like an idiot for even going outside at all, and I already hate the sun. 🤦‍♀️

    Great video! I just got my upper arm done about 5 weeks ago and have been looking to the right sunscreen to use to protect it. Do you have a preference of chemical vs physical sunscreens? Is there any data on chemical sunscreens interfering with tattoos in the long run?

  • @user-ct2mm8if6w
    @user-ct2mm8if6w 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    What I'm wondering is... Will a hotter day (hotter sun) be more detrimental to a tattoo than say a sunny day in december and it's not so hot? You still get the UV rays and I'm not sure the hotter climate actually has a significant bigger impact on the tattoo. Thanks for the in-depth vids!

    • @Inkademic
      @Inkademic  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd have to dig into it a bit but I'd actually presume overcast days can be worse for you because you don't notice how much UV you're getting. (Like how sunburns from overcast days can be so much worse than ones from really sunny days.) That said, the UV index seems to be higher in hotter areas so it may just work out that way (but not because the heat, itself, is making it worse). Good question, though!

    What is your recommendation for dealing with pimples or other skin blemishes that pop up after a tattoo is healed and/or during the healing?

    • @Inkademic
      @Inkademic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Keep the area clean and leave them be. You should never try to scratch or pop a pimple regardless of its location, really. On a tattoo, it can cause infection or scarring, both of which can mess up your ink.

    How about shaving on a tattoo? How long should you wait to shave that area?

    • @Inkademic
      @Inkademic  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question and one I want to tackle at some point! I never shaved over a tattoo until I started my sleeve and now I keep it shaved (at least when I'm going out in public 😅). I wait a full two weeks before I even consider shaving over a new tattoo. If I can go longer, I will as shaving won't damage the tattoo at all from my understanding (it being under the skin and all) but you can introduce bacteria because razors are, despite how they make look, quite jagged.

    • @medelmontesinos6621
