I'd argue that the klingon's space forces are all cavalry. B'rels and skirmishers, light cavalry meant to maneuver and harass. K'Tingas and Vor'chas are knights, cataphracts, the heavy cavalry. They charge through the enemy, destroying everything in their way before looping around and charging again.

Klingon tactics make sense when you consider that to them, offense and defense are the same. You search for opponents so you can find them before they can find you. You attack them before they can attack you. If they turn out weaker then you, you stopped them from becoming a threat in the future, and if they turn out stronger then you you found out on your own terms. To try to fight anything new you discover might seem needlessly violent to others, but to the Klingon people these warriors die protecting the Klingon Empire from now or future threats and as such are given honor and respect. Peace and being on the defensive makes them nervous, as all it does it give enemies beyond the horizon time to grow stronger. And it is why they will always seek to expand no matter the risk. This worldview of them translates into their ship designs, their weapons, their tactics, and every other aspect of the way they fight.
Exactly. Their invasion of cardassia reflects this philosophy perfectly. To the klingons it wasn't a war of conquest, but a defensive action. They wanted to strike at the dominion before they had solidified their supposed foothold. Thus defending against an enemy strategy. The fact that they were reacting to rumors and the martock changeling is immaterial. The klingons defend by attacking. They strike preemptively to keep their enemies on the defensive and off balance. This makes a lot of sense. By keeping the fighting within their enemies's territory it allows the empire to protect its own industrial base, as well as protecting its own civilian population centers. The only real disadvantage is that they increase the length of their supply lines. Unless they adequately defend the lines of supply, a clever enemy can cut them off.
@Matheus Cerqueira the Klingons tended to pick strong allies when they have strong enemies to contend with. During the 23rd century they had the Romulans as allies while they were in conflict with the federation.
These tactics remind me of Soviet battle doctrine. The Soviets, while in no way lacking in military academic thought and complex orders of battle, still used rather simple operational tactics. Their military hardware was usually less effective at long ranges, making them focused on closing in on an enemy. Their tactics might have seemed crude and inflexible, but were faster and simpler to implement even for less experienced commanders.
been watching a lot of TIK and the Military History Visualized youtube channels.. apparently, the idea of "endless hordes" of soviets during WWII was B.S. more or less, they did outnumber the Germans, but not at like 10:1 ratios. they used misdirection and concentrated their forces on an exposed enemy area, then when attacking would send More men in than would a western or German power, and thus achieve a breakthrough earlier, that while costly, would Typically save more lives and thus be more effective Overall, in the Long Run.. (or so i have been told by professional and amateur military historians..) however, i have no doubt, that in many desperate battles especially Early in the war, very Dumb tactics were employed by inexperienced, under trained, not qualified(not combat "MOS" perhaps??....) Soviet officers and NCOs.. This is just my opinion, backed up by what i have read elsewhere..
They also got rid of commissars pretty early in the war, sending them to be retrained and commissioned as political officers. And if you think they’re the same, they’re not. A political officer is an *officer*, meaning he’s trained to command and to support his superior officer while ensuring that the party’s plans are carried out. Commissars were largely civilians and often interfered with proper military planning, which is why the top brass eventually got rid of them. So I wouldn’t compare them to Warhammer 40K’s commissars

I think it would vary from class to class. The birds-of-prey were small, and meant to hit hard and fast. While they would have efficient shields, most of the available power would be allocated to the weapons, engines, cloak and life support. They also had heavy reinforcement structures built into key areas of the birds-of-prey. This would also indicate that they didn't rely too heavily on shields. The Vor'cha, k'tinga, and Neg'var were able to take a beating, but that seemed more from sturdy construction than shield effectiveness.
This carried over into the Starfleet Command games (which use the board game’s rules). The Klingon tutorial states that forward shielding is the heaviest, which is as it should be, because a true warrior faces his enemy
Romulans has their own birds of prey. Those looked different and didn’t have actual wings. They just had a bird of prey painted on the hull. Their TNG-era battleships are called warbirds. Although JJ Abrams also calls some Klingon ships warbirds.
@@artembentsionov I think the confusion comes from the fact that Klingon Bird of Prey was originally meant to be a romulan ship the klingon captain stole, it wasn't mentioned anywhere in the movie though and later movies and series made that 100% klingon design and an evolution of type of ship first seen in the 2150s (aka during the series Enterprise). That said the Romulan Bird of Prey does sort of have wings as the Nacelle pylons are wing shaped, the ship sort of looking like an arrow point backwards when viewed from the top or bottom.

They can have three ships of the same type or A D series cruiser with a pair of BOP’s to cover its flanks. The lead character in my novel commands a squadron of single nacelle Destroyers. In one battle against a “Triple triad”. 3 D-6 Cruisers each with their own pair of Raptors (Large Bird If preys). The Commodore, with his fleet of Destroyers first decides to “Pick the low hanging fruit” And strip the cruisers of their light support ships. This leaves the flanks wide open for his Destroyers to to buzz around them like angry hornets.
Ah, powerful, Heavy disruptor cannons are in the tips of the nacelles of the D-7/K' Tinga, per blueprints and the TOS episodes where they fired. Still maintaining the "triangle" of weapons power on those cruisers.
Excellent point. The vor'cha also had numerous disruptor banks in the wings and nacelles. Once again maintaining that triangle of weapons design approach, but making sure that even if that if the primary foreward battery was damaged or disabled, the ship still could fight effectively
Most klingon ships are well armoured especially protecting vital areas like the bridge etc so they are not weak in a prolonged fight and during the next gen era the klingons had vorchas to fill a all round combat role to support the faster lighter ships and also support the heavier negh var class ships that will provide heavy fire support for the faster ships and they have heavy weaponry and are very large well armored and shielded so overalp tng klingon fleet isnt just a fast attack forward facing firepower fleet but they are still based around that style of combat.
Lol I've played SFC for over a decade. Now I have no clue where that game sits on canon but the Klingon early ships always ALWAYS had a weakness. The rear shields. While the federation had a strong all round defense Klingon's during early and even to SFC 2 had shield greater frontal and a token rear shield typically around 40% of the forward pre reinforcement. I could take a frigate if I was lucky and boogie past her with full reinforced front shields, take an alpha strike from a D7 k'tinga losing 80% of my shields and the reinforcement and cut my engines to 7.4-8.0 (roughly 1/4 impulse) and use a high energy turn which flips me 180 degrees with a risk of knocking my engines out (with a good engineer you can do it twice with zero risk and 2 1/2 minutes between HETs) and alpha strike the rear shield. I used two of 3 torpedo tubes and would typically knock out 1/3-1/2 of it's engine power and 2-5 weapon arrays) taking a david ship vs. the Klingon goliath. You would of course then stay on the D7s rear pummeling it as you can. It's a tough fight but it can be done. You WILL be dry docking your ship post fight for repairs, but the lolz you get for eating a heavy cruiser with the smallest ship (fully upgraded) and sending that crew to Gre'thor (what honor was there attacking a ship roughly 1/3rd yours?)

At the battle of zama scipios legionaries defeated the elephants by allowing them to charge and they opened up channels in their lines to allow the elephants to walk through while they pelted the elephants and their riders with projectiles untill they retreated and actually disrupted hannibals forces as they fled. The numidians were the main reason hannibal lost at zama.
I know the b rell class ships are small assault ships with a small crew etc but i thought they were equipped with aft torpedo launchers so they can de cloak attack at high speed then as they fly past they launch torpedoes from the aft launchers. Perhaps i was mistaken.
I think you are overstating the idea that klingon ships are structurally weak. When you get down to it they really aren’t. They build their ships with reinforcing bracers and struts in key areas. There are ample instances of klingon ships taking huge amounts of damage and being able to continue to fight. The Bortas took heavy fire from 3 k’vort class birds-of-prey and was still able to punch back. The bird-of-prey that kirk captured in the search for spock took direct photon torpedo damage in her underbelly (the weakest part of the ship) and was still able to fight. A klingon raptor class scout ship was able to withstand the crushing pressure of a class 9 gas giant for hours.
Klingons have been a starfaring race since the 1940s, and yet humans caught up to them in a few centuries... after a global nuclear war and with Vulcans holding back the best tech. This goes in line with what that Klingon lawyer told Archer about Klingon society becoming more militarized and focused on honor above all (even the dubious honor of wiping out an unarmed refugee transport), while other professions are seen as lowly and unworthy
Lets see some Ferengi battle tactics. They'll probably think you mean "bribery" and get themselves killed arguing over how they'll write the terms of the contract.

Romulans and Thrawn are the PERFECT adversaries in my opinion. both are cagey, smart, secretive and cautious.
