- What can we say? We really love @TheDecemberists! This is one of our favourite songs by the band and one we've wanted to sing together for a long time. Hope you enjoy, and as always, let us know what songs you'd like us to do in the comments.

I'd love to see more Decemberists covers. May I request either The Mariner's Revenge or The Crane Wife next?
Mariner's Revenge is truly epic
Not sure how they’d manage the high notes though
Fun fact about this song. It was written about the Granite Mountain mine accident. An accidental spark ignited the oil soaked cable and turned the wood supported mineshaft into a chimney. There were 400 people trapped underground as the tunnels filled with smoke and air became scarce. The miners were often trapped in offshoots and had to build bulkheads to try and keep the smoke out and to keep the air in, but they only had so much air to survive.
For those interested, there is a monument dedicated to this tragedy in Butte, Montana at the site.
'Fun' you say :D
why was there an oil soaked cable in the mine?
@@Alexander-qg6rm lack of OSHA
To add more on
This was one of many WWI events in our Montana history. The miners came from all walks of life… Irish, Germans, Finnish, British, Swiss, Turks… all during a period which the copper they were mining was being turned into ammo cartridges against their home countries.
But they saw themselves as equals since they were all being exploited by the Anaconda Mining Company (who owned a lot of mines including the Speculator/Granite Mountain). Only two died from burns, both of whom went bravely down into the inferno to inspect the damage
I'd love to see a redition of Soldier, Poet, King from you guys as well as some banjo lessons for hog eyed man and other banjo heavy songs that you guys play
seconding the Soldier, Poet, King suggestion - or indeed any Oh Hellos song would be wonderful (I'm thinking a Longest Johns rendition of Like the Dawn might make me cry lol)
I"VE BEEN WAITING SO LONG FOR A DECEMBERISTS COVER!!!!!
Look up their cover of Eli the barrow boy ;)
Voting for "just JD's hands" videos of your songs (as guitar tutorials for those interested)
LOVE the Decemberist covers! One of my favorite bands covering one of my other favorite band? YES, PLEASE
Lyrics:
Get the rocks in the box
Get the water right down to your socks
This bulkhead's built of fallen brethren bones
We all do what we can
We endure our fellow man
And we sing our songs to the headframes' creaks and moans
And it's one two three
On the wrong side of the lee
What were you meant for?
What were you meant for?
And it's seven eight nine
You get your shuffle back in line
And if you ever make it to ten you won't make it again
And if you ever make it to ten you won't make it again
And you won't make a dime
On this gray Granite Mountain Mine
Of dirt you're made and to dirt you will return
So while we're living here
Let's get this little one thing clear
There's plenty of men to die; you don't jump your turn
And it's one two three
On the wrong side of the lee
What were you meant for?
What were you meant for?
And it's seven eight nine
You get your shuffle back in line
And if you ever make it to ten you won't make it again
And if you ever make it to ten you won't make it again
And it's one two three
On the wrong side of the lee
What were you meant for?
What were you meant for?
And it's seven eight nine
You get your shuffle back in line
And if you ever make it to ten you won't make it again
And if you ever make it to ten you won't make it again
And if you ever make it to ten you won't make it again
Can't say I was expecting this as a cover, but I'm excited for it!
Another fantastic song, chaps! Always love it when TLJ does a country song.
If you're still taking song requests from the comments, I've got one: I'se the B'y, the traditional Newfoundland reel made famous by Great Big Sea.
I'se the B'y that builds the boat and
I'se the B'y that sails her and
I'se the B'y that catches the fish and
Bring 'em home to Liza

All around the Circle!
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍 Finally, Johns and December join into a smoothie of music!
Absolutely love the covers you guys do, pls do Rocky Mountain high pls!!
I’ve really been meaning to get into The Decemberists and this is amazing! I’d really love to see you guys do “Royal Oak” sometime!
any song with a banjo is gonna get my attention, dam this is good. love it
Nice version. Personally enjoy the one by The Dead South a bit more, but, that's just me, and still a great rendition of it.
I loved that bit of Raggle Taggle Gypsy in there. One of my favorite folk tunes.
Good catch! I picked it out, thanks to you, when I re-listened!
I was about to write a similar comment. :-)
I'd love to hear them do the full Raggle Taggle Gypsy song. That middle bit was beautiful! The rest of the song was nice, but that extra was really magnificent!
@@thewiseturtleThat would make my day! It was my mother’s theme song for her radio show and I always think of her.
I first heard Planxty doing Raggle Taggle Gypsy back in the 70’s. When I hear the segue into Tabhair Dom du Lamh, the hairs on the back of my neck still rise up.
Please do a cover of the Mariners Revenge Song!
One of my all time favourites that I'd love to hear a rendition of would be 'Which side are you on?', I feel it has a haunting aspect you guys could absolutely nail! Great cover!
I swear I remember TLJ doing Which Side Are You On somewhere. But maybe I'm imagining it!
They need to do more of these workers songs. We need them now. Kids need to know where we came from.
John McCutcheon does a great medley of West Virginia Mining Disaster into Which Side are You On -- I'd LOVE to hear TLJ do that particular segue; it works really well.
YES! I've been hoping for Rox In The Box for a long time, and I was not disappointed. "This bulkhead's built of fallen brethren bones" gives me chills every time I hear it.
Every day that The Longest Johns posts is a very good day.
Every day that the post is a Decemberists cover is a double plus good day!
Now we wait patiently for a "The Apothecary" cover 😉
a cover of 'Over the Hills' form sharpe, 'Cornwall My Home' from the fishermans friends or 'Skull and Bones' from home free would be amazing.
I love King is Dead. It's such a good album. Think it was a real staple of the new direction of the Decemberists. (At the time. They've jumped into a few other genres since) So many good songs on it that I think could be Longest Johnsified.
That was so good! This is gonna get looped a lot. I really like the mix of all three stringy-plankies together, it sounds so good.
MY FAVOURITE SONG COVERED BY ONE OF MY FAVOURITE BANDS???!? words cannot describe my joy right now :'D
The bridge sounded like "Raggle Taggle Gypsie"! It just occured to me that this is one of the folk songs which you have not covered yet. Please consider it soon. With your banjos it would be a banger! ❤❤
When is the covers album coming out? Also could you ad my son john to spotify?
really want someone to cover Decemberist's Mariner's Revenge.
I've never heard this song, but I like it! Thats at least what I thought until it was solo time and everyone started playing raggle taggle gypsy, that really cought me of guard and now I love it! 😂😍
This style suits you guys so well! Absolutely adequate! Might I recommend any song from Goodnight, Texas? They have a lot of similar folky/rock songs that sound a lot like the new Voyage album, 'The Bank Robber's Nursery Rhyme' might be fun to start with or 'Dearest Sarah', but do have a gander!
Wonderful, as always! - Antiguan Graveyard would be very welcome.
Seconded but by God does that song make me cry.
Star of the County Down!
Bluegrass with some irish thrown in perfect. Such a beautiful mix of the 2 genres with kick but voices. I just can't stop listening to the longest johns.
Do you guys think you'll do more stuff from the Decemberists? How about "Down by the Water?"
Frank Little
1879-1917
We Never Forget
10/10, I absolutely love this song and this is an amazing rendition
Good cover! I love the Decemberists! The whole King is Dead album is great, you can cover more songs from it.
Once again this is a cover made for me, specifically ❤❤❤❤
Yet another reminder of the band's instrument skill! What a vibe.
Love Decemberists. Love this song. Love your cover. Terrific :)
I loved this. It''s one I've never heard before (apart from the Raggle Taggle Gypsies section). I'll be checking out the Decemberists (I've a feeling I might have a couple of theirs saved already, hidden in one of my massive folk lists), but I'll always stay loyal to you guys!
Hit 'like' within the first 5 seconds this time! Men and stringy things all singing 'xtremely supremely.
I really wanna hear you guys do "Soldier, Poet, King"
This is extremely adequate, boys.
Some suggestions:
Star of the County Down
Galway Girl
The Rising of the Moon
Heave Away
The Fields of Athenry
Juice of the Barley
Big fan of you guys!!
Daughter and I get to see you AND The Decemberists in Atlanta in May. Stars aligned.
Just so adequate!!!! You guys are great, I always look forward to your new songs! Keep ‘em coming! I believe you have come into your own as a trio!
Raggle Taggle Gypsy cover when?
Hell yeah, another Decemberists cover!
Another banger lads. Keep 'em coming.
Great stuff! If you come to Minneapolis a day early you might be able to get into their show up here- your tours are crossing paths...
Luv it! 😊 y'all sound great & enjoyed hearing mandolin in there too❤. Ya get a zillion suggestions of songs-this one reminded me of a lady from Kentucky who has passed, (I got to see her live as a kid, it was wonderful) but her song 'Black waters' (run down through my land) by Jean Ritchie , might be one I can imagine you guys doing justice on ~
Still waiting for the Changing by John Mayer cover. It is a shanty I swear!
Adding this to my repeat 100x list
Adequate 😊 Please could you consider Marques by Hughie Jones of The Spinners? I think you chaps would do a beautiful job of it
Sounding fine, Gentlemen! Can't wait to see you live in September.
Greetings from Montreal. I'm looking forward to seeing you folks once again and if you haven't done this one yet, you might want to give Train Leaves Here This Morning by the great Gene Clark a whirl. Thanks and see you soon.
There is a video I saw on TH-cam of the LJ where Robbie is sitting on the floor shirtless and playing the bass. I can’t find it! Any help out there in YT land!
Funny, I think I heard this in Hardspace Shipbreaker as background tune.
I wish that this had made it onto the new album! Perhaps another “C-Side” compilation?
So wonderful
Oh this is sooooo good. The Decemberists are my favorite and your style of music is my favorite style of music!
ONE OF MY FAVORITE SONGS !!!! Got to hear the Decemberists do this live about two years ago, I’m at work now but already know I’m gonna love your rendition!!
EDIT: AND I DO INDEED LOVE IT!
You need a couch songs album :D
An unexpected but very welcome clashing of two of my favorite bands, I love it
I've never heard this one before, but it's already stuck in my head and on repeat. Most adequate, as always! ❤
this was a great one. id love to hear either stan rogers' sailors rest or nathan rogers' version of three fishers
That was rather funky
Was that Raggle Taggle Girl shuffled in there?
What instrument is Robbie playing?
A mandolin
i wondering what music tool that robbie is using
I wonder if I'm the only one who likes this music in their performance
Isn’t JD also playing a bass drum or something like that since I see his right leg stomping
It's his kick drum.
Did Andy always have those tattoos? Never noticed them before.
He got the ivy leaves done over the winter, I believe.
Looks good on him in any case.
1:56 😊🥰
Adequate 😊
Sick song!
Brasilllllll
I do love the Johns introducing me to new bangers (and some old classics and artists I haven't heard) via covers. Very adequate! I love this one.
Impeccable 👌
Insane!!!
I want them to do Norman Blake’s Billy Gray.
What a crossover, my la(n)ds
DO THE "THE BIG HEWER" AND "WHITE SQUALL"! (It would be adequate.)
"The Big Hewer" would actually be extremely fitting. It's also about miners!
One of my favorite bands covering one of my other favorite bands? Sure, I'll bite.
had an unbelievably bad day but this completely cheered me up again
oh the NEW HARMONIES!!! i always love seeing your take on decemberists songs!! 🩷
This was great!, not my favourite but still fantastic!. These couch songs are some of my favourites 🌊
I've never heard this song before, but now I love it! You guys are amazing!
As a Montanan, I approve
i love how john and john and john play
I'd really like to see a cover of The Log Driver's Waltz
ADEQUATE! STOMP! And I can't even begin to express how grateful I am that you continue to provide us with content while y'all are on tour. I can't imagine the work it took to get all of these done before you went!
Most adequate!
And it's one, two, three,
What are we fighting for ?
Don't ask me, I don't give a damn,
Next stop is Vietnam;
And it's five, six, seven,
Open up the pearly gates,
Well there ain't no time to wonder why,
Whoopee! we're all gonna die.
so wonderful as always
Yes
Cant wait
Hell yea
What a tune! ❤
I hears me some ear gold.
We gettin the rocks in the box with this one 🗣🗣🗣🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Love the Dunn Cow Inn/Ragle Tagle Gypsie mashup.
