WOW, that Altamont stabbing/Who trampling reference was DARK and flew right under the radar. There's even knife slashes across his shirt, and shoeprints on her shirt.
Not exactly in the best taste.
A pre-9/11 irreverence. I was thinking that about a lot of the references in this. An innocence/ irreverence that kind of went away...

This was only 10 years after Kilmer filmed the Doors (released in 1991).. We are now 30 years removed from when The Doors was filmed. I feel so old now.

It's actually a line he says in The Doors movie. Not a historically accurate depiction but Val did a hell of a job becoming James Douglas.

This was absolutely hysterical! The little girl singing "The End" was laugh-out-loud funny. As previous commentators said, it really is wild how closely Val Kilmer resembles Jim Morrison.
That final band constellation in the... end is probably the most brilliant creation ever. A Sumo wrestler, a little girl in a blue dress, a sheep and a businessman talking in his cellphone... absolutely brilliant! Just a huge musical antimatter...

She was most original and unexpected gem by far. That was it for me. She and the sumo wrestler in that reincarnated line-up killed with The Doors’ The End. So surreal. Hilariously inspired!
The beginning of the song was good. She put a lot of feeling in it.
I love how the audience is just not getting this. Kilmer is still giving the Morrison role his all!
Rachel Dratch wearing the Who shirt with footprints all over it is one of the darkest jokes SNL ever did and it went completely over the audience's heads.

Holy crap ~ how have I never seen or even heard of this until February 2021?! This sketch is so layered and dark and hilarious while being a pitch perfect spoof of Behind the Music. Even stranger...do not quote me but I am fairly certain that little girl at the end is Jewel Restaneo. I stage managed A CHRISTMAS CAROL at MSG for years and Jewel was a child actor in the show for one, maybe two seasons. She has grown up to accomplish many things since playing a reincarnated Jim Morrison.
You are correct. Jewel Restaneo was also on SNL another time when Calista Flockhart hosted.
Thank you TH-cam Recommendations, took 77 years for me to see arguably the most well written and executed sketch in SNL History, The references to the famous dead fans (altamont, who trampling victim), Tracy Morgan doing the best impression I've seen him do lol, and that ending... 7 years later someone tell me that Kid is a superstar I haven't heard of... Top 10 All-time SNL sketches just perfect.
To this day ,I can't for the life of don't understand why Kilmer wasn't nominated for an academy award for his portrayal of Morrison.
Or as Doc Holliday in Tombstone .

I think it was because he was very difficult to work with off camera. Great Actor. Extremely talented. But it got to his head a bit. Industry people started hating him. I think I learned that in this documentary about the film he did with Brando, The Island of Dr. Moreau. That shows you the Oscars aren't based on merit. It's all Politics and Money.

This is actually the Beatles story: Jim Morrison & Amelia Earhart could be John & Yoko, Keith Moon is Ringo briefly quitting during the White Album sessions, and the bickering between both Jims evokes Paul and George falling out in the Let It Be sessions. Even the song The End as the band's last song establishes a parallel with The Beatles' final track on Abbey Road.

Weird that an SNL sketch ends better than it begins; it was dragging, but they nailed it with the R band and the girl.

Morrison only screamed that line because the original lyrics were, “fuck you all night long,” and they couldn’t play that on the radio.
He screamed "Fuck yooooouuu ALL NIGHT yayehhh", but they cut it off in the mixing process, fading in so you only hear "ooooo ALL NIGHT yayehhh".

I loved the movie , it was my first introduction to the doors .
When i was out in the city at night in the middle of the dancefloor i saw someone give a vhs tape to somebody else , i was like , for real ??
And i asked what the h... is this doing here on the dancefloor , a tape...
Then this girl said , you should watch this , you will like it.
I took it home , played it ...and the rest is history.

Possibly the smartest and funniest SNL skit ever. Especially the ending.
Side note: Loie Armstrong had collapsed cheeks from trumpet playing. The result was that sometimes when he played the horn, the cheeks puffed way out, like those of a frog.

Funny side story, sub - way back in the late 70's a buddy and I broke down along the highway(u-joint) and had no choice but to hitchhike home for parts and tools -about 120 miles - we couldn't believe it, right away a conversion van with a mural stops for us .We think,'great, party van! ' Instead this dude starts blasting speed metal CHRISTIAN ROCK, and quoting the bible in between 'songs'. Wouldn't allow drinking or smoking of anything, either. Not ungrateful, but jeez, total buzzkill!
