Wow! This is awesome. I was at RTC San Diego the next year (Aug, '81), and it brings back lots of memories. I'm glad you have these films - I came from the east coast and my parents could not attend graduation. Now my children can see it, too. Thanks!
WoW!!! This is AWEsome seeing this as you were right before me as I started Boot Camp around Jan 1st, 1981. I was in Company #903 in the Drum & Bugle Corps. But this video is the closest having been there a couple of months later. Thanks, for posting.
I was in Boot Camp at San Diego 1981 Division 5 Company 162. Yours was the closest to finding my graduation date. Thanks for the memories. Still hopeful for finding home video of my graduation. Lots of pictures but my parents didn't own video camera
I was there a bit earlier (Jan 1980, Company 906). ENCM Rice was CC. Started on worm island before moving over to main-side (near the chapel) for drill division barracks. Marched in 3 other graduations with the Recruit Drum & Bugle Corps before marching in my own graduation.
Company 80-160. July-September. Company commanders were GMG1 Parks and MM1 Cotrell. Thanks for posting this, great video and brought back lots of memories.
~very A J Squared Away~graduated 12February1973 from Company 001~under the direction of OSC Robert Cralson~we carried our piece at graduation and did the 16 count manual~what precision we all had~every company that was there~did not get leave tho~went right down the road to USNTC/SSC "A" School to be a commissaryman or cook~best job I ever had out at sea and got east coast then as all were being shipped to Viet Nam~but wound up in the Med at Black Sea at the end of my enlistment~
I went through there in March of 85. Company 061 we were the color company at graduation. My father was a WW2 Navy Vet and he also went through RTC San Diego in 1941, just a few years ahead of me lol! Sad that it’s gone now, a lot of history was made there.
I went through boot camp there from November 1980 to January 1981 with the 948th Company. Familiar scene/pictures. We were the specialty: flag team, band: musical players and brigade members. It was fun and thrilling for me and taught me alot then. MM1 Healy was our company commander.
I went to basic, for the Navy, as I retired from the Army, in San Diego. In 1984 and was in drill company as crack rifle RCPO. I am from Idaho and had never been further than Portland and SLC, prior to hitting bootcamp. I couldn't figure out why there were about 50 of us standing around the airport and it was like 2200hrs. Finally the bus came and we were off. I remember the bus passing over a bridge and pulling up in front of the reception area. There was a CPO with a gold/blue aiguillette waiting at the bottom of the stairs. He asked me for my packet and he took me over to an entirely different area. I thought, how could I be in trouble just riding the bus. Was something wrong with my enlistment paperwork? He asked if I wanted to be in drill company and he explained all that they do. I told him that I was a jock in HS and didn't play in band or wasn't in JROTC. He said it was due to my high ASVAB test scores. I loved the idea of doing parades and football games, so I said yes. I was the only one at that location and all of the other guys were off somewhere and I didn't see them again. Was placed in a different barracks while awaiting for the company to fill. It took about two weeks. I had never shined anything before and got very familiar with brass. It was everywhere...torpedoes, anti-aircraft guns, bells and more bells. We formed and I had a great time. I loved crack rifle and had never performed anything like that in my life. Great time in SD as well, as all of my schools were there, at FLEASWTRACENPAC. "A" school, BEEP AND "C" school...allowed me over a year to explore and have fun in the SD area. Best of times in the Navy, until going into the Army (as an E5) and my schools were at Ft. Belvoir, VA...over a year again and at the Smithsonian nearly every weekend.
Sadly, there's nothing but condos and apartments on the NTC side. Many of the recruit barracks are still on "worm island," currently being used by the fire academy. The "USS Recruit" is still there, and the Preble parade field where we graduated is now an open grass area. Company 230, Oct-Dec. '79
So cool. I graduated February 1976. Special company 950. I was a brigade adjutant. Got to carry a sword. We had to march carrying a rifle everywhere. Learn the 16 count manual at arms. Great memories
The same year (1980), a little earlier. Company 152 Company Commander Signalman 1st class Harris, June to August in Boot, then September - October at BEE on NTC side. Then off to GLAKES for EM A School and then Orlando for NPS 8104.
Graduated USNTC/RTC July 1968 Co 321 CC SF1 Dishmon. Completed at SSC Class "A" School August 1968. Retired in 1989 for 21 years of dedicated service 😊
Company 100, July 1978. Gaskill and Wilson I believe were our company commanders. So glad I joined the United States Navy. 65 now and missing my youth.
Probably graduated about the same time. Saw this was Company 206, I was in 204. My next 2 barracks room numbers were 204 also. I'll never forget the number 204.
Company 947 November to the beginning of January 1980. Straight to Hospital Corpsman school after Boot. Boot was was a little longer due to time off during Thanksgiving and Christmas. 947 was the drill company, I was on the State Flag Team. Carried the Arizona flag. Best time in the Navy was 8404 at Pendleton. Lot of regret for not staying in and staying 8404.
I was there from Nov 05 1980 to Jan 03 1981 with Company 948 with MM1 Healy as my company commander; we were the specialty too; I carried the state California flag. I'm trying to remember if we both of our companies combined to march in the parade field several times. I remember those times.
It's been so long,I graduated June 27th 1980, Company 110,Company Commander Was Chief Gunners Mate High,, And PO1 Deluna,, We were the 2nd graduation unit to wear the white jumper With the legging., They were the best of times.
Company 098, 1980, own the record for piss flags that will never be broken. Was in the best shape of my life after that period with all the pushups and marching parties we were awarded.
I too was in 098 in 1980. All those barracks steam parties, marching parties and three hour "short tours", like you, built me up into the best shape as well. Our CC didn't want to be there, for sure
I was in RTC San Diego, CA Company 925 from June to August 1980 part of the Crack Rifle Team. I'm still looking for a Company graduation picture. Thanks for the post.
~I was in Company 001 from 20December1972 to 13February1973 with OSC Carlson~we marched with our piece~and good reason~we learn the 16 count manual arms throughout basic inside and out~next stop was Service School Command down the road~then most of the class went to Viet Nam and one guy and myself went to the east coast~I got Newport~he wound up in Boston~at the end of my enlistment I was in Soviet waters in 1975~pretty hairy stuff indeed~
I am so happy to see this, I was in company 026, graduation was the proudest day of my life and they warned us not to go to Tijuana, guess what? I remembered I was picked as flag bearer because the other flag bearer made a left flank when the platoon made a right flank, well, I made a right flank when the platoon did a left, you look so silly doing that, guess what?
Company 163 in 1978 May I ask what program you used to put this vid together with? It brings back so many memories. I can't believe they turned this beautiful base into condos! PS I hated those blue working uniforms. They replaced them with the cotton dungarees and shirts after a boiler tech got lit on fire while firing up a conventional boiler. The polyester in the uniform melted into his skin. I can't imagine what his time in the burn ward was like while they peeled the melted plastic off of his flesh.
The original was a super 8mm film, I had it in my closet for 30+ years. We sent it to a lab in California that specializes in transferring old films to digital video. They also enhanced the colors and did a very good job. After I got the digital files of the film footage, I put it together on my Mac using standard iMovie which is included with any Mac you buy.
My time in Boot was Jan 1966. The CC was a disaster. He thought it was his job to embarrass and humiliate the recruits as much as possible. He promist me Recuit Commander but gave me nothing except to clean dirty pans in the galley. After Boot of 13 weeks, I went on to work in three Admiral Commands. I had a lot of fun in the Navy after my miserable experience with that awful CC, who was a Ist Class ship's plumber. I would like to forget him.
I was, I forget. April 1979 turned 17 in February, was in SD 49 days later. I was a pathetic case, the Navy straightened most of that out. I see here they ditched the "TJ Cabbie" dress uniforms and returned to traditional Whites and Cracker Jacks.
Company 921 , Drum & Bugle Corps 1975,,good memory , except for that screwed-up Uniform the Navy was experimenting with in those days that made us all look like Good-Humor Ice-Cream Men in those damned Tropical Whites ,,Ha! Try marching smartly & playing Anchors Away on a two-valve with that frkn stupid CPO hat that blows-off with the slightest puff of breeze! Ironically they didn't see their way clear to switch back to the traditional Crackerjacks & Dixie-cup till literally just Months after I collected my Honorable & went home in '79, witch after spending collectively 2 years, 9 months & 12 days at sea I really didn't see any point in reenlisting just for the privilege of wearing.
Shipmate, Company 206 looked great that day! Very proud to have been part of this amazing experience!
My dad graduated there 8/8/80. My son is now in the Navy and will heading to SD after deployment. Thank you for sharing! 💙⚓️

What is the confederate flag doing out there?
I think they put it there on purpose back in 1980 because they knew it would trigger woke people in 2022...
Actually, it's a state flag. One of the southern states; Mississippi, I think.
