    The content you create is amazing. The workflow is such an issue sometimes for the most simple task. Thank you for clarifying how this works. Autodesk leaves a lot to the imagination sometimes.

    As someone on the recieving end of a drawing like this, I would HATE! you to do a cutting list like that. Doesn't matter to me what the overall usage of material is. I want the length of each piece. Makes my job a lot easier when fabricating. It is afterall a cutting list, not a totals list ;)

    • @stevenguyen292
      @stevenguyen292 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree with you. Inventor let you set length per part or group together as an overall length.
      Overall length good for quick purchased but manufacture they love to see each part each length.
      too bad Inventor not giving the user an easy option to switch this feature.

    This is where SOLIDWORKS dominates, at the moment. their weldments works very well. Although there are a lot of improvements that could be made to it.

    Great videos. Could you expand on this one with cutting lengths and cut details in the parts list.....more of a cutting list really!

    The Isometric View in that drawing must have been designed by Escher.... melting my brain.

    Sir, now expand on this. Use "reuse part" show how much of a nightmare that situation is and can be. Oh, and if you happen to make a mistake and need to change the size but you really need to use that same "filename" ....banging head on desk now.....
    Excellent video as always sir.

    Thanks for the video, it has been very instructive about everything that I have finally learned to do the summation of linear meters of the profiles, I know that the partials of each piece could also be put on the list, Thanks

    Always look forward to seeing your videos Neil, your videos have always helped me out. i think one of your early frame generator videos was where i came across your channel. i have always found frame generator in Inventor a real pain compared to solid works, but i am an Inventor user. i just wish Inventor would adapt to the way solidworks uses Weldments and 3d sketches

    • @Neil3D

      What's the main differences in weldments and 3d sketches?

    • @jamiewicks2765
      @jamiewicks2765 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the reply Neil, it’s the user interface is far better on 3d sketches and the user experience it’s hard to explain in words and same with weldments it’s just better in solidworks, I am a big believer of your Channel and pleased don’t think this is a dig as all of your videos have been very helpful and useful and your is the best Autodesk inventor videos on the whole of TH-cam.

    • @Neil3D

      No no I'm actually genuinely just curious to know what it's like on the other side, funnily enough Solidworks won't let me play with their toys so it's a bit of a mystery to me what its like over on the dark side ;-)

    • @PeteBrubaker
      @PeteBrubaker 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      "Solidworks won't let me play with their toys" Nobody gets to play with their toys unless you pony up the dough, or you go back to university and provide them with a transcript or ID. In the current environment it's a short sighted business model that's probably going to cost hem.

    • @jamiewicks2765
      @jamiewicks2765 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow that’s really harsh Neil that solidworks won’t let you near there product. Weldments in solidworks as it’s called is all done in one environment I.e create a sketch then move to the weldment tabs and then click your frame members, inventor asked you to save a frame skeleton solidworks doesn’t and all the frame sections are done in one menu with multiple functions. You then have the opinion to then turn them into parts. In simple terms, solidworks has more functionality but inventor has a better user interface. Becuase I can use
      Both if I would to choice what software to design a frame gen or do 3d sketches I would use solidworks, and I could honestly say you would if you had the chance to have ago

    we need to add a column with cost that takes the length of stock multiplied to a cost per foot or inch. That would be co cool and actually useful.

    great video.
    Please! Make video about hierarchy in large assemblies, when many parts depend on each other.
    why the inventor is so much worse than solidworks and does not have a boolean operation in the assembly that affects the part itself. realization in fusion 360 in my opinion very well, but in general it's still worse than the inventor

    But what about material optimisation? If I need 10 lengths at 2.5 meters it would tell me I need 25 meters total. Now I tell my requisitions department to order 25 linear meters but the bar lengths are 4 meters long. Being smart they go ahead and order 7 bars at 4 meters, which would give me 3 extra meters. But the problem is I need 10 bars at 4 meters, because each bar has 1.5 meters of waste.

    Not sure if you saw my comment on the previous video, but this video was the answer to all my questions. Just watching you go through the process of manipulating the parts list helped a ton. Does that custom style persist across all projects?

    • @Neil3D
      @Neil3D  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep I did :) The custom style will persist across all your projects if you save it into the style library... I think I did that at the end of the video... if not, I've done a vid on how to manage the style library already. Alternatively you can just open your IDW template and create the table within that... that's probably the easier option for people who might not work in offices with other people!

    I would like to see a video on BOM structure assembly level. I need individual frames in my cutlist. I am sorting profiles by G_L for length. this way I can get plate thicknesses aswell so long as I name the dimension G_L and export it. BUT. The cutlist gets an "incompatible units error" fromt he frame generator as soon as I notch, trim or extend any frame member that has an identical length same profile PRIOR to CUTDETAIL trimming. I can't find info anywhere.

  • @taavikoppel1769

    How do I create the parts list style when I want to group items with the same length. So I would have:
    NR / LENGTH / ITEM_QTY
    1...4 / 600mm / 4
    5...10 / 800mm / 5
    But all of them are from the same aluminum profile. By default it is just showing:
    NR / LENGTH / ITEM_QTY
    1 / 600mm / 4
    5 / 800mm / 5
    But that just looks weird because it seems like items nr 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 are not listed. Especially if I have them displayed in the balloons.

    Solidworks user here and sorry to say it but that was pretty painful to watch. So much faffing around, especially with all the different files and naming etc. It's like it's not really geared up for designing with structural members. Good clear video though.

    It would be nice if AutoDesk would add in a prefix/suffix field within the filenaming window, so we don't need "2 days" to copy and paste. They have it for mirroring etc., how could the lose sight of this for frame generator?

    • @Neil3D
      @Neil3D  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      They put that into Vault, it can be done but it's a Vault Workgroup/Professional feature unfortunately

  • @taavikoppel1769
    @taavikoppel1769 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    By default it lists every single frame... not for me. It seems impossible to list the individual frames. It is just adding everything up in the quantity and in the unit quantity column it says "VARIES" I have been messing with this the whole evening. I need custom frames to show up correctly. For some reason the ISO frames add up the individual frame member lengths but the custom frames just show "VARIES" !?

    Is there any way to get individual member lengths with their end miters for all end treatments including trim to face and trim to frame, I know you can get miter information using the custom property "CutDetail" , but that doesn't work for trim to face or frame only "miter"?

    Hi Neil! 6:17 I've been renaming frame members since I remember (for other reason) but the "Display Name" doesn't change automatically like in your video. What gives??

  • @brinventor354
    @brinventor354 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why don't you use "weldment" and let the ERP sort out that the frame needs to be purchased? "Weldment" opens a whole lot of other functions in combination with Vault.
