Dos Card Game Rules and Gameplay Demo

  • Dos is the followup to Uno, but the rules are a lot more complex. Once you know what you can do and what each move does, it gets a lot easier. This video will hopefully give a visual, learnable method to wrapping your brain around a rather headache-inducing rules booklet.
    RULES REFRESH:
    -Each turn you can play one card on each card on the center row that matches that number for a Single Match OR
    -You could play two cards whose numbers equal the number on any card in the center row for a Double Match
    -If all cards played on a center card match the color as well, you have a Color Match
    -For a Single Color Match, you add a card from your hand to the center row at the end of the turn
    -For a Double Color Match, you do the same but also each other player draws a card
    -After you have played your cards, discard all piles you played on in the center row
    -If there are less than two cards in the center at the end of the turn, place cards from the deck until there are two
    -After refreshing the center row, add any cards you are allowed to play due to Color Matches
    -A 2 card can be any color
    -A # card can be any number
    -If you can’t play a card on your turn, draw one; if you have a match available you may play it OR
    -If you don’t have a match or choose not to play one, add a card from your hand to the center row
    -At any time you have two cards, you must say DOS; if another player beats you to it, draw two cards at the end of the turn
    -First player to empty their hand wins! Add up the total points for each other player, and the winner receives all of them
    -Wild 2 cards are worth 20 points; # cards are worth 40 points; all other cards are worth face value
    -The first player to reach 200 points wins

    You actually explained the game a whole lot better than the instructions that came with the game itself. I was confused what to do with the discard pile since the instructions don't mention a single thing for what to do there. Thanks for the help.

      I think part of the confusion is everyone is expecting it to be basically uno, but it's actually not like UNO at all

    • @megarotom1590
      @megarotom1590 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The rules make about twice as much sense if you add at the top
      "This is not UNO, while the gameplay somewhat resembles UNO, it is not UNO, forget everything you know about UNO, before you read"
      Honestly it's not that the rules themselves are confusing, it's that you're not sure that you understand them
      (They are still a bit confusing)

      The use of the discard pile is to get rid of the cards that you matched, as you said this is not uno it’s actually not even similar except the look of the cards lol In uno when there are no cards left in the pile you turn over like crazy 8s this game doesn’t function the same !

    Just to clarify, "no color matches" means you cannot, for example, play a red 4 on top of a red 2 like you can in Uno. Otherwise, color matches are restricted to playing the same number, except the # which can be played on any number, and give bonus effects as shown in the video.

    • @TheJMaqExperience
      @TheJMaqExperience  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      kevin12567 Exactly. You always have to match the number. If you can match the color on top of that you get a bonus.

    • @tastybrain
      @tastybrain 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      There ARE color matches; he shouldn't have said that there aren't. However, what he meant is that you HAVE TO match the numbers to play. The rules say that you match the number "regardless of the color". If you DO match the color, then there is a bonus.

    I never liked Uno because it was sooo popular in high school and college
    that it seemed that's all anyone wanted to play. When we would play I
    would get bored and say, "Can I just add these 2 cards together and play
    them both for the value of the card on the board?" Well, it only took
    2+ decades for someone to decide to give us permission to do that in a
    game play ;+) A coworker got this game for me for Christmas and my
    niece and I just played it last night. I told her I should have watched
    a video tutorial first. This was an excellent video, however, I agree
    with many that explaining the "no color match" was a bit confusing. I
    got better clarification reading some other people's comments. Thanks
    to Kevin12567 (below) for a really good explanation. I'm ready to play
    again!! And to anyone looking for some other fun card games...go check out Phase 10, Skip-Bo and/or Sequence. In my opinion, hands down so much better than Uno or Dos...just saying. But I'm all for anyone who still wants to enjoy a game night the old-fashion way; unplugged from TV and electronics...sitting at a table with a card or board game!!

      adam jshy I personally love how fast and loose Dos is (once you get through five to ten minutes of practice games to get a feel for the rules). When you run into bad draws Uno can drag on and on, and Dos’ extra piles help to lessen that. Uno is still great because it’s so simple that anyone can play without a frustrating learning curve.

    wow, I did *not* know that that's how you play dos. I've always played dos like uno but you can add up to two cards from your hand to match the card in the middle (if it can add up). And if you did put two cards down, then the card on the top is the new card the next player has to match. One example from my assumed rules is that when there's a 2 in the middle, you can either put a number, two ones, the color that the 2 was made from the player who dealt the 2, or another two.
    I would like to play the official version, but unfortunately, the rules and set-up seem too new and confusing for new players and especially players who don't like to learn new rules (like many of my friends)

    In the second game at 5:21 you could have won by playing wild 2 and yellow 1 to match the yellow 3 (this will make a double color match making the opponent draw a card and you placing a card at the end of the turn), the red 3 to match the red 3 (making you place another card at the end of the turn) and playing the 9 and blue 1 to match the 10 and calling dos. At the end of the turn you place the two cards leaving you with 0 cards.

      This is absolutely correct. I was sucked into the lure of the 10-10 match because in my limited experience, it's much harder to get rid of them and if you put them in the center they're easier to match on. Completely missed that Player 1 could've swept both games. Well played.

      I like this better than Uno because Dos doesn't go on forever like Uno does. So the rounds are much quicker. If you like Uno I recommend 5 Crowns which is a rummy style game. If you are playing just to players I also recommend Schotten Totten it's basically a 2 player card game with rummy and poker hands. Also if your parents like Monopoly they will probably like Monopoly Deal better it has the same feel as Monopoly but is much shorter and you feel like you have more control over your actions since no dice involved.

    hey mate I read the rules and it says that you have to make number matches as well, and the # sign can replace any number just for like "if there is a red 7 down, you can use a yellow 2 and a red # sign to make a match", so if the # is not red you can't make a match... like "blue # and yellow 2 can't match for a red 7"...the rest of the video is cool, actually helped me with those complicated rules... thx

    • @gboldero1
      @gboldero1 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, you can use a blue # to match a red 7 but it won't be a colour match, similarly a red # with a yellow 2 won't be a double colour match, only a red # on a red 7 will be a colour match, similarly two red # or a red # with a red 1-6 on a red 7 will be a double colour match.

    Thank you for explaining this, it really helps when there are examples, so watching a round or two really helps. The only thing I’m still confused on is when do you add to the center pile? And what determines how many cards you add to the center pile? Well, either way, I think I’m going to stick with uno, dos is too confusing for me.

    • @TheJMaqExperience
      @TheJMaqExperience  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You always have to match the number of a pile, but if you match the color as well you can place a card from your hand in the center row as a new pile. If you use two cards to match the number and they both match color, it's still just one card but all other players also have to draw a card.
      The other time you would make a new pile is if you can't (or choose not to) make a match. At this point you draw a card from the deck and have another opportunity to match. If you do not make a match, you place a card from your hand in the center row as a new pile.
      Dos is super confusing but also strangely intuitive once you get all the nuances under your belt. That said, Uno is a classic for a reason and it's way easier to understand.

    Hey - (trying to get my head around this game as well) - based on the rules at 2mins only a single card is added to the Centre Row and the Left (right to you) player would draw one

    They should include a link of your video on the next version of the game’s instructions booklet! Thanks!
    Question: the instructions say that when you cannot make a move, you need to draw, and then “if you can make a match after drawing, you may do so”. Do you interpret this as a) you can make a match by using ONLY the card you just drew; or b) you may combine the recently drawn card with another one your hand for a match?

    • @TheJMaqExperience
      @TheJMaqExperience  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Danilo Luna I interpreted it to mean that after you draw the card, you can use any card or cards from your hand to make a match.

    This game is pretty cool I like it better than Uno. The only thing I don't like is that when you refill the center row there is a chance that the card will be a wild 2. Only way to match it is with another wild 2 or a # card, so it's hard to combo off of it and becomes dead space for a while. Maybe I could house rule it that when a player refills the center row and a wild 2 appears he keeps the card and refills the row by drawing another card.

    Here's what I really don't get about the way they've structured this game: Applying any color match bonuses you received is the very last thing you do to end your turn. Why? If this happens *after* you make sure the 'center row' has at least 2 cards to start again FROM THE DECK, then how is this really a bonus or advantage? Sure, you get to discard any card(s) from your hand of your choosing to add to the 'center row', BUT...you've now given your opponent an additional option or two for their turn. They have more cards to choose from in the center row, and will more likely not have to draw a card from the deck, but rather will probably be able to play straight away on the center row, somewhere. Not much of an advantage or bonus. It would be much more of a game changer if the card(s) you opt to discard from your hand for your match bonus are what initially replenish the center row up to the mandatory (2) cards, rather than adding to cards coming from the deck.

      Ethan Spiro I believe it’s a self-balancing mechanic, to slightly even out the opportunities you get for having a crazy hand to start.

    • @janablanco3946
      @janablanco3946 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I completely agree! I think we are going to make "house rules" and play it the way you suggested. It makes a lot more sense, and then really would be a bonus for the player who made the color match.

      Ethan Spiro we played it like it says and half the time the game is over before you get to play the 2nd time. We were playing with 4 players Exactly like you said you get those color matches and now there is 4-5 cards in center and the next guy almost always goes out. Game is way to fast. Always shuffling cards. We played for 4-5 hours and never really got much better. So we changed it and if single color match you replenish center to 2 cards not the draw pile. If you get 2 card color match. Everybody draws 1 or 2 (we played both ways DOS is 2 so we made them draw 2 ) even just 1 card game lasts longer. In my opinion is still way too fast of a game

    Round one, you can’t just lay down a third center card unless you’ve earned a bonus. You would have to hold on to that card until your next turn.

    Can you use a # card in your deck on a 2 that’s already laid out and use the # card as a two ? And use the same color and the two to match your # card to make it a color bonus?

    • @TheJMaqExperience
      @TheJMaqExperience  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes to both. The Wild # card can be a 2, and the Wild 2 card can be whatever color you choose, so you can make it a color bonus.

    At 1:25 you say there are no color matches in DOS but then you make a color match?? I'm very confused by this one statement, otherwise everything seems clear. Otherwise, what is the point of the colors?

  • @henry__johnson
    @henry__johnson ปีที่แล้ว

    3:59 could you not have played 2x3 + 2x1 to make the 8 or can you only combine two cards to achieve a centre card?

  • @OhMy0695
    @OhMy0695 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    According to the instructions that came with the game, you can put down a card for every color match that you make in Center Row. Is that correct?

    • @TheJMaqExperience
      @TheJMaqExperience  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that's my understanding as well. So if there are two cards and you color match both, you discard both matches, replace them with two cards from the deck and then add two cards from your hand, leaving four cards in the center row for the next player to work with.

    • @missplott
      @missplott 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shouldn’t the other player also have had to draw a card after you had the double color match at the 2 minute mark? I thought the rules mentioned the other players having to get a card ??

    • @TheJMaqExperience
      @TheJMaqExperience  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      missplott The phrase Double Color Match refers to when you match two cards that add up to the number in the center row. In this case, it’s two separate Single Color Matches.
