This is the fourth of your videos that I've watched, and you've set the standard, as far as I'm concerned,. The composition of the shots, the quality of the images, the historical notes, the maps and the audio all add up to a wonderful experience. I've travelled over the West for most of my life, partly as a long-haul trucker on I80, so can really appreciate the scenery -- good times. Thanks.
Well done on this highly professional-feeling series. I have just spent my afternoon off watching them back to back instead of doing my household chores :D
Gotta tell you - this series of videos is INCREDIBLE!!! You've really done an amazing job here. My daughter lives in Rock Springs, which drew me to this particular video, and the rest of the series just fell into place. Excellent videography, maps, factual and easy-on-the-ears narration. This series is a winner!!!
Absolutely a brilliant series. I am from the UK so have never seen these places but with an interest in US railroading the narrative is very interesting and enlightening. I hope you do more.
Enjoyed the series. Nice work! In your narration, I really appreciate some of the extra details you offer. I'd like to see more of that--info about locomotives, cars, maintenance, etc.
Magnificent series. A small note. Every year around October, the UP closes Moffat Tunnel for about 2 weeks for preventative pre-winter maintenance, and the Amtrak California Zephyr is diverted around it from Sparks, Nevada, via Green River and back to Denver. You can still travel some of this route.
Having grown up in Utah and living near Ogden for years, I remember seeing Southern Pacific trains heading west to cross the Great Salt Lake and UP heading for Salt Lake to continue west on the south end of the Lake following I 80 out to Nevada. What is interesting to note that those 2 lines now merge near Wells Nevada. So UP can chose both lines to head for Sacramento going over the Serra Nevada mountains
I know with the seasonal rain taking out the tracks on the Utah border and the feather sub close because ofthe destruction of Oroville Dam up we'll have to reroute most of it's traffic to get into Roseville. Recently on the SP side of the Transcontinental Railroad the rotaries were brought out of mothballs is always good to see those big machines throw the snow off of the Transcontinental Railroad.
A spectacular video! I especially appreciate it since I am trying to capture "the feel" of the Union Pacific Evanston Subdivision on my N-scale layout. ...Roy
I may eventually begin to run one of the Kato N-scale steam locomotives heading up an excursion train on my layout, but for now, my layout is populated with modern diesels, that is, ES44AC's and SD70ACe's. ...Roy
I have abstained from any comments until the entire series were viewed. That time has come. So here they are. 1. Entire series was entertaining, informative, and actually fun! 2. Kudos to you for your effort. 3. Sly observation -- I won't say for sure; but I think you filmed the same eastbound intermodal train several times, and each time it was shown, the train was father west. If not, it sure looked the same!
Fun fact: this series was largely show in the opposite direction in which is was filmed. My father and I deadheaded from Michigan to Ogden, and then headed east over a week. So yes, that one intermodal, and oil train, too, are the same eastbound repeated in several distinct locations as me moved east throughout the day. There are some exceptions to this eastward rule, particularly around Sherman, but you're certainly correct in your assertion!
Evanston subdivision is an amazing place it is here that Union Pacific crosses the Wasatch Range. In 1869 this is where of the rails were joined. The Evanston subdivision is home of the Yards of Ogden 50 miles west of here the Golden Spike was driven into the ground since then Ogden has become the heart of the Transcontinental Railroad every train going to all corners of the West Coast go through this yard written on the side of the Depot is the city's motto "you can't go anywhere without coming to Ogden" known as The Junction City of the West Ogden has tracks running through it and all four directions on a compass the Northbound track heads to Butte Montana and Pocatello yard in Idaho where it connects with the OSL which goes to Portland. The westbound track goes over the causeway and directional runs with the Feather River route of Western Pacific all the way to Roseville on the Southern Pacific and Donner Pass East track is the Transcontinental Railroad itself which takes UP all the way to Council Bluff Yard in Omaha the South track is the Central Corridor which is operated by Utah rail and the Utah Transit Authority with Union Pacific and BNSF operating along the line via trackage rights this line goes all the way to Salt Lake where it splits into four additional tracks with the East line out of Salt Lake headed southeast to Roper Yard and then East via Soldier Summit to Denver the West track out of Salt Lake is the Western Pacific Line of the Shafter Sub it heads over Silver Zone Pass and enters Roseville from the North East Via Feather River Canyon. The south track and the southwest track go to the same destination Midvale Utah these are the Sharp Subdivision and the Lynndel Subdivisions Union Pacific uses this track and also BNSF via trackage rights to deliver cars from Los Angeles and Barstow this line is also known as the San Pedro and Salt Lake which stretches from Butte Montana to Los Angeles California and ends on Terminal Island in the San Pedro community of Long Beach. Freight along this line is mostly containers and domestic Freight most of the Manifest traffic goes to the sharp subdivision and is sorted at Roper all BNSF traffic is sorted at Provo with switching done by Utah Rail all Intermodal traffic is sorted at Terminal on the west end of Salt Lake which is the new yard that opened in 2003 to alleviate congestion at Union Pacific's Warm Springs yard on the OSL the former Intermodal facility is now home of the Utah Transit Authority Maintenance Center which is home base for the FrontRunner trains which are seen every single day except for Saturday and Sunday on the Central Corridor.
17:09 Grangerville is an important junction on the Transcontinental Railroad it is here the OSL begins and starts its trek to Portland Oregon. Trains bound for Pocatello Yard make their turn here before heading northwest passing through Kemmerer and Soda Springs before joining the North Ogden Sub at McCammon Junction where they directional run with the Utah Northern all the way to Pocatello Yard.
I love your videos, the content is excellent. I enjoy the hard work you do keep it up my brother every time a new video comes out I damn near trip over my own self just to get to my phone so I can watch it anyway good work Alex keep it up hope to see some new video soon.
This is a great video. I understand that due to operational changes UP made in the last two years the number of trains crossing this route each day has been greatly reduced.
Thank you for your hard work in bringing us this tour/pseudo-history lesson. Count me in as another avid supporter of your journey if you ever decide to cover the rest of the route from SLC to Sacramento.
39:19 The Yards of Ogden themselves this is the jewel in the crown that is the Transcontinental Railroad 150 years ago the Golden Spike was driven in the ground near here but since Promontory did not fit as the junction of the lines they moved it to here Ogden. It is here where UP tracks end and SP, WP, Rio Grande, Utah Northern, and OSL tracks begin every day 1 million trains going to ever corner of American go through here.
Can you do another video series of the Union Pacific's Overland Route Rawlins and Evanston Subdivisions with the cities that you missed like Tipton, Riner, Creston, Morgan, Peterson, Castle Rock, Aspen, Altamont, Carter, Thayer, Bitter Creek, Red Desert. Then another video series of the Union Pacific's Laramie Subdivision and Sidney Subdivision with North Platte.
A marvelous series! Your narration is spot on (even if your spelling and grammar in the opening segments is atrocious. Shame on you). I enjoyed every minute of it!. I will definitely be recommending this series of videos to anyone who wishes to learn about the Overland Route, and how important it is to the unification of the USA. A spot on presentation. Thank you!

Like very much, but I wish you would have shown a bit of Rawlins, like the yards/fueling racks and UP Consolidation 533 . If you take the 80 bypass, sadly you'll miss the town.
I would love to see the rest of the line west. Rest of Utah, through Nevada and California. All the way to the Pacific. Any plans of doing something like that?
I'd love to, but the west end is a lot farther from home and with traffic density less than the east end, it'd be more of a challenge to get all the shots I need, with the split lines and all. It's not impossible, but it is improbable in the near-term.
Ahh, I think you're somewhat mistaken. The western half of the Transcontinental Railroad actually terminates in Sacramento or Oakland (depending on your definition), not Los Angeles. As far as Cajon Pass, you're thinking of the Santa Fe's Transcon. Speaking of which, the Transcon is another distinct possibility to cover...it is certainly on the radar.
