It was an old game show on Nick, during the 90's. It involved kids getting points from high scores in games like this one. There was also a virtual portion of the game, where the kids would enter a room and actually be a character in a video game simulation
The last time I played this game - in college, way back when - I beat the game on one quarter. Took about an hour, IIRC. One of the matches against double opponents the clock was at 1 second left when I got the 3 count. My score was... ~800K +? Something like that. The key was beating the hell out of the monsters as quick as possible, then running around destroying everything for radiation bonuses and stuff. Once you've destroyed what you can, then pin them. There was a bit of a cheat... if you knocked an enemy down, you could predict which way they'd roll before getting up. If they were above the midpoint of the screen, they'd roll down; if below the midpoint, they'd roll up. It allowed you to be waiting for the monster just when it is getting up - and unable to counter a lunge attack. Arcades were such a fun getaway.

Ah yes, the good ole days of gaming! I'd play this religiously at a local pizzeria not too far from where I used to live! I wouldn't mind a this gen makeover of this....I know we have those Godzilla fighting games out, but I want a new version of THIS!

this looked better than it played (never really was a fan of the SNK arcade games). but at least in their other games, i knew how to play them and i knew why i lost lives or whatever. in the king of the monsters I and II, it seems as though the player has very little control over the outcome of the moves- when you grapple, it doesn't seem to matter how hard or fast or furious to mash the buttons, the outcomes are pre-determined. i never could figure out what the deciding factor was in each grapple/move/throw etc.
SNK is still around, they released King of Fighters XIII 3 years ago, and they're making plans on King of Fighters XIV, and a new Samurai Shodown (Both 3D graphics, but I'm sure they're gonna stick with traditional 2D gameplay, as the last 3D Samurai Shodown had terrible reception from fans and critics)

Awfully nice of people in the waterfront district to put up a retaining forcefield. Sure they take a lot more “destrAction” there but they keep the downtown area suburbs safe
If i makeca spiritual successor to this im doing a combination of it mixed with mortal kombat & godzilla movies. Half the fun of being a giant monster is breaking things and eating the military.
