Today we are going to check out a little-known model called the Gibson Les Paul Custom Stealth which was a limited edition of ~25 guitars done in 2010 that featured a dark purple finish all over including purple painted binding and headstock! It also came stock with EMG pickups and a little stealth V-shaped plane on the back side of the headstock

This is definitely a keeper or trade for a cleaner less used model but only being one of 25 it might be tough.
I agree with the original modder as far as putting the 85 in the BRIDGE and the 81 in the NECK. The 85 is much warmer AND higher output, so it really belongs in the bridge, contrary to tradition. The 81 in the bridge is extremely harsh and ice-picky imo, unless you're tuned down really low. Then it actually works quite well.
I have a guitar with the EMG 81/85 set and I swapped them around a long time ago and I will always leave it, it's much more versatile and they are much more balanced together
I forgot to say this…Trogly does SUCH a good job with the history. I love it when he talks Gibson history.

85 was a bad sound in the bridge for me. I get how it's a bit too high output for neck position but it doesn't have enough bite in the bridge position. Ruined my chug lol
@@kentfranklin736 to be fair, I tried the 85 bridge in a friend's bolt-on Kramer, not a Gibson. In a Les Paul that's naturally thick and warm, I suppose it could possibly get too muddy, but in that Kramer, it blew any 81 I've ever heard away, at least in standard tuning or dropped D. I did enjoy the 81 I had in an Epiphone Goth V tuned down to dropped C though. That was my Rammstein "chugga, chugga" guitar! 🤘

EMG make killer pickups, the 57TW/66TW set blow a lot of other pickups out of the water. The hate is definitely unjustified
Yesterday, I ordered a 1980 Yamaha SA2000 in wine red from Reverb. It's essentially a rebranded ES-345. I was aware of this model before I was aware of the 345, and it essentially is intended as having everything the real article possesses for a fraction of the price. Love to watch you unbox one yourself, Trog.
so... this is basically a normal, run of the mill guitar for ESP. But it is a total event for Gibson? Jeez...

The 85 in the bridge works pretty well when it comes to people who don't want a higher output, but wants to give active pickups a try. & for fun, "I haven't had EMG's for 15 years...", technically, you have. You did play some EMG's for some of the models you've shown us before....
He said he hasn't had emg in about two years, not 15.

Cool guitar, like the look. Don't mind the lack of fret markers or the emgs (typically, I love ESPs so into metal guitars), but, woof, that sounded not so good dirty tbh. Don't know if it'd be better swapped back with the 81 in the bridge, or if its because they're the x series, or if its just your amp setup but either way was not good to my ears. Clean wasn't bad though, definitely spanky.

That stealth has a mark on the back see 4:59 where a guitar stand has reacted with the nitro, it's a bit like smaug's lost scale.
The red one the orange one and a yellow one are awesome actually if I had a mean to measure I would make a yellow widow with smoked natural sides back. There's a picture of one like that floating around online and it's literally the coolest guitar I've ever seen

The wiring doesn’t look stock. Emg equipped guitars back then had crappy tiny pots, no solderless. The solderless pots are a big and needed upgrade to keep the battery from draining though.

The main connector in the cavity is what EMG calls the "BUSS" connector. That is not a pre-amp.
A friend of mine have a lovely 92' LP Custom in Silverburst with factory installed EMGs. They are rare, but do exist.
Having a 92 silverburst custom in general is really rare as the color wasn’t in standard production at the time. Send some pics to my email when you get a chance

Does it matter if the adjustable pole pieces are on top or bottom of the pickup when installed? Got a SH1B and they are on the top according to the back of the pickup...wth?
I'm really not a fan of EMG pickups, but I think the Stealth is an interesting guitar. As for the lack of fingerboard inlays, they really are not all that important once you know your instrument. I rarely look at the neck while playing, so it don't bother me. It's a nice guitar and I like the widow's even better.
Indeed I agree if you can play with your eyes closed/without looking you don’t need the markers.
not a fan of the EMGs...and you could always get some of the noninvasive stick on fret markers if you needed to!!

It kinda irks me that the truss rod cover looked like they had it engraved at a mall gift shop. For that money they could replicate Les Paul's actual signature instead of fonts picked out of MS Word.

That thing is not a preamp, its the heart of the wiring harness, and stock on the solderless emg sets.

I noticed very dark fret markers on the edge of the face of the fretboard. Is that from the factory or something a previous owner did?

@@Trog No, there are strangely-placed dots at the edge of the face of the fretboard. Look at 11:17-11:19 as the light goes over the fretboard. I don’t think that’s typical.
Z is for retired. Chloe and I love this guitar. The colors are amazing and we like active pick ups too.
I have a 2012 Purple Widow and the side dots are definitely a problem. In case anyone's interested, I did contact Gibson and they'll replace them for $300.

You're not entirely correct regarding neck tenons. I have 2017 purple widow (so a third gen) and it has a long neck tenon.
There isn’t a clear date known when gibson started using long neck tenons in custom shop customs yet. It could also be that yours was custom ordered with those specs since most widow runs are simply that - custom ordered
I always stick the 85 in the bridge with a 60 in the neck if using emg, the 85 isnt as brittle sounding as the 81.
No fret markers is always the best, a proper clean look to it.

The 85 is actually a pretty good bridge pickup, it's basically EMGs answer to P.A.F, at least before the newer pickups came out.
And it will sound different with different heads, tubes, speaker and cable combinations.

I think I can speak for more than just myself that I much prefer to see you playing because I find that I can learn riffs from you, which is the secondary, but equally important, reason that I watch your show. Trogly, I watched Norman Greenbaum's video for "Spirit in the Sky" last night and noticed his Fender Telecaster has 2 knobs on the bottom of the pickguard. Tried to research it and found out Norman had a built in Fuzz box installed in it. Check it out when you can 👍

Widowed LPs always look like Chibsons or budget brand knockoffs to me. The EMGs aren't doing this model any favors in that aspect.

As a non guitar player: why is the bridge slanted slightly when they appear to be adjustable?
Richlite on a thousands of dollars Gibson is unacceptable, Pau ferro or Indian laurel is preferable, but IMHO no Gibson should have anything less than rosewood when you consider how much they cost.
Richlite is expensive and superior
Trogly’s show is CLEARLY a rich guy show for rich guy collectors. And that’s fine. But… the last two guitars you have shown…not so great.
It also does not help when you talk about the mod, collection or the other sites not having many offerings but having some some good 😌 players grade stuff.
My niche is special limited editions. Regular models just don’t appeal to me as much. Life is too short to have the same guitar as everyone else

The pick ups were put in the wrong locations. The 81 is the neck and 85 is the bridge. Somebody save this guitar. Trogly should know better.

I think it takes a Les Paul nerd to love the infinite variety. Like someone who likes wines wouldn't drink just one variety of grape, or someone who likes 'Vettes wouldn't just like one model. They might have a favourite but it would take time to try out different ones to discover that. I'm not a gig artist or a collector but I've owned 3 Les Pauls and still have two.

Those pickups seriously work way better reversed as the original modder put them. I also think the X series kinda sound like poop compared to the originals. Plus Trogly doesn't have a proper METAL amp, nor is he generally the most METAL of players.
