Brilliant Yeol Eum Son, brilliant Alexandre Baty, brilliant orchestra, brilliant Schostakovich. A circus lost a long way from home. But still with some "singability" in it I think. They still are playing their home tunes.
I'll admit that for me (and perhaps other older listeners) Shostakovich lacks the "singability" of a Brahms, Rachmaninoff, Mozart or others. Still the fevered, almost manic intensity of his inventiveness must be admired and treasured. Even more so, one is staggered by the creativity and talent of the Korean nation to nurture a group of musicians able to brilliantly present this very difficult composition without a conductor! Ms Son, as always, is a COMPLETE JOY to watch and listen to. What a blessing to be alive in this time to enjoy her many talents.
Since this was composed in 1933, you would have to be quite old indeed to bemoan the tonal vs atonal/dissonant musical argument. Its percussiveness is the point, and 'singability' never was for many composers after 1900 or so. I find it very melodic. In fact, myself; much that came after would ruin anyone's voice. But I agree with your other points here...
