I think the idea behind the manikin monster scenes were to show that other people were getting drawn into Silent Hill because of things that have happened in their own past. Basically that there were other stories going on in Silent Hill at the same time that were unrelated to the cult plotline. I actually liked this idea... I think some games are super-hard to translate, as the narrative is very “video gamey’, or the actual gameplay doesn’t really lend itself to a film adaptation. But a game like Silent Hill should be layup. Every aspect of the foundation is solid. And there isn’t the disconnect between narrative and gameplay that you see in a lot of other games. There’s no cognitive dissidence. It all ties in together cleanly. And even when you look at the stories and how the town functions (acting as a personal hell/purgatory based upon the ‘sins’ of the individual trapped/haunted by the town), the franchise readily lends itself to telling new stories, meaning you could take the town and workings of silent hill and easily apply them to a new protagonist without a ton of difficulty. And if you wanted to follow the storyline of SH1 & 3, it should/could be even easier, as it’s a very easy story to follow once you work it out. While this wasn’t actually “the worst movie/video game adaptation ever”... it certainly was the best franchise to adapt into a film, and they just screwed the pooch.
I had a crush on the lead actress as a kid, leading me to play SH3, then leading me to play SH1. So yes, even though I was already into survival horror, I never gave SH a chance before having a crush on the Heather from this film. So there.
Holy shit I completely forgot that Harry lives in this movie. The one time Sean Bean had every right to be killed in a movie and he wasn't. I haven't seen it since like 2015 and this thing is so bad I actively chose to believe that they still killed him off if only to say at least they got one thing right. But they didn't even do that.
So you guys hear the news? Christophe Gans said he is working on a new silent hill movie, (kind of like a reboot) this time being a 100% faithful to the first game, and his first choice for Harry is Carl Urban
Hey if it's not too much trouble can you make a video on Resident Evil 2 Remake Map layout. Like how the shortcuts are opened up after you get keys to certain areas. I've been quite interested in such topics but can't really find any video on it. Please consider this.
I’m sorry to hear about your losses at the hands of drunk driving, it’s a terrible thing and I agree with you on the sentencing. As for the movie, complete doo doo ass. Couldn’t agree more. They really could have done something great with it too. I didn’t like the first SH movie either but at least they tried. I think it suffered from being an early 2000’s film, the worst decade for horror. The director was probably trying to please too many people at the time. I think the next movie really has a chance to shine with the resurgence of indie horror and smart 70’s style films like Hereditary, Us, Get Out, Oculus, The Lighthouse and whatnot. Hoping they adapt the second game this time. It’s not my favorite but it seems like the prime candidate for a film adaptation. Now go watch the taste of this movie out with the Sonic movie haha.
@ 13.24 "the worst videogame to movie adaptation ever made" Nope. This movie is hot garbage to be sure. But you should watch any of the 11 videogame movies Uwe Boll directed and/or produced. And there are even a handful of others, better than those but worse than this film.
I did not realise those were all directed by him...I don't understand? Why does he keep getting the job of making these when he's clearly bad at it and probably doesn't even care about making them good films anyway? Is there some backstory on this? I've seen about half of them and they are seriously some of the most painful things I've ever watched.
@@Gaff. Because he took advantage of a German tax law that insured that his movies made money no matter how bad they bombed. They've since revised the tax laws and got rid of the loophole.
I consider this film to be a guilty pleasure of mine. You cannot blame everything on this movie because the first film deviated so much from the game, the writer/director here was trying to force thr story of SH3 upon a SH1 that was nothing like the game SH1. I blame both parties.
I'm actually kind of excited to see the upcoming Silent Hill movie, I wanna know if Cristophe is just going to completely retcon this movie or to try and remake it in his vision.
I came from the future to say that this week, Christophe confirmed that it will be a SH2 film adaptation. So he's not touching whatever Revelations is lol
I'm not gonna lie, I actually enjoyed Adelaide Clemens' performance. I think she's a really good actress that gets put in really bad things more often than not. I find her portrayal of Heather to be just about the only thing I could actually stomach in the movie, and I wish she got a chance to play the character in a better adaptation.
Hey man sorry to hear about your losses. Ive luckily not lost friends that way myself but I agree that's a serious issue. I was on trip once with a friend, we went to watch our football team on the road. My buddy has family out there and knows a few people so we joined a big tailgate. After the game we hopped in one of his friends cars to catch a ride. I was smashed myself but I could instantly tell this driver was pretty much on my level and should not be driving us. I started speaking up saying we need to switch drivers. I was being persistent and would not drop it, every one was getting annoyed, calling me a "buzz kill". And trust me it's hard to speak up sometimes around new people but I was like I'd rather they all hate me and I make it home alive. They actually ignored me but before we even got out the parking lot the driver hit a curb. At that point everyone realized I wasn't just being paranoid and we pulled over and switched drivers. I believe if I had not spoken up, considering we barely made it out the parking lot, I may of not made it home that night
People love that pyramid head placement. But seriously you hit this one hard. My wife despises this movie, and I've never really been able to bring myself go check it out. I can just feel it will be disappointing and you've done enough to cement that. Great job dude!
Tbh the first silent hill movie changed my life. I was too young to play the OG games when they came out, so I discovered silent hill through the 2006 movie. I absolutely love it even if I can see its flaws (like the pyramid head nonsense). So I was beyond excited when they announced revelations. But then I checked who the director was... And I knew we were in for a disaster. I think the only reason why it's the worst film you've ever seen is that you've probably haven't seen other films directed by this man. It seems that all his movies are THIS bad. I must admit his SH is a particular level of shitty, though. I decided to act like SH revelations never happened and wiped most of it from my memory. You've reminded me how insanely bad it actually was. Thank you for this great vid and your whole SH retrospective series, it has been a pleasure to watch, and we share about the same views on the first movie so I was really glad to hear a more nuanced opinion on it. Let's hope Christopher Gans is gonna make something good!
I remember seeing this movie in the cinema. Fuck me its the worst film I’ve ever seen on the big screen. I’m amazed how fine I felt leaving the cinema, despite how shit the movie is. Also, Avalanche, your opinion on drunk driving is spot on, he should have got life
I discovered your channel recently by complete chance, and fell in love with your work ! I just wanted to thank you for the great survival horror content, and to submit a game for an avalanche review : rule of rose
I saw this in theatres too when it came out and while I thought it was bad, during the time while watching it, I thought it was good. Only movies I ever wanted to walk out of was Rob Zombies Halloween 2 and Fifty Shades of Grey.
This movie was so ridiculously full of plot holes and elements that made no sense that I almost drove myself insane trying to figure it out. Had to look up these kind of reviews just to reassure myself I wasn’t crazy, and found one of my favorite youtubers had it covered!
Revelation is really bad but damn it’s fun to watch still. Idk it’s just entertaining to me that I just deal with it. Honestly, I hope the rumors are true and Gans does come back to make a proper sequel to the first film. Maybe even completely remake revelation the right way because they literally retconned Alessa and Sharon becoming one at the end of the first movie.
I have to make a confession, apart from a few hours on SH1 I've never played any of the games, the control system was at fault (for me, not for anyone else), I couldn't get used to it at all. I have been aware of them and thought of it as a Lovecraftian horror. Having just blitzed the whole of your series on SH I have a much deeper understanding and enjoyment of SH and for that I am hugely grateful.
I didn’t have any problems with a convoluted and consensical plot of this film. It gave me mostly positive emotions, but only because I did enjoy the style and characters of Silent Hill 3, the game. The film tried to combine elements of both the 1st film and the game, as a result, it was quite bad as a standalone product. But because it gave a rather faithful live representation of characters, monsters and style of the game I like so much, I don’t see it as a slap to my face, but rather as a guilty pleasure.
If this is the worst movie (and video game movie) you've seen, don't try watching Uwe Boll's House of the Dead. I watched it in a theater where at least 6 people were smart enough to walk out and demand a refund by the halfway point. I was one of the other 6 that stayed to poison my soul.
4:53 watching this scene from 2020, I almost had a death stranding feeling about it. When I watch this movie in theatre, I almost felt this movie could be much better if it were a Musical!!!!! It looked so strange and I didn’t know (as a long term hardcore fan of silent hill), if this was supposed to be a horror film or something experimental. But I had to say the nurses were awesome
I just wanna give you props for putting some of my feelings to words, while at the same time making a video I like that managed to draw out all my disgust towards this "movie"
I liked Christophes film adaptation, it was an adaptation that is arguably one of the best game to film movies I've seen. I get why some people didnt like it but as a stand alone film I enjoyed it and really got involved in the story it presented. It is clear Christophe has heaps of passion for the series and it's a damn shame this mess was his originals "sequel". I hope Christophe retcons the whole film with his sequel because even giving this film the satisfaction of a story connection in the next would be disheartening.
Worst video game to movie adaptation? While I agree this film is not great, have you ever seen House of the Dead? Now there's a dumpster fire I'd love to see you review!
Don't hold your breath for another Christophe Gans movie. He's a great director but is even more notorious than Guillermo del Toro for having announced projects get cancelled even days before filming, only managing to get 4 though the finish line in 25 years.
It's not the worse video game adaptation that still goes to Alone in the Dark but it had so much potential. If you watch the directors debut film Deathwatch (Silent Hill in WW1) you can see clearly why he was hired. It just unfortunate that the writing suck and so many characters where mishandled.
I was so impressed by the first SH movie that I was not only disappointed after seeing Revelations; I was straight up saddened and depressed afterwards, too.
the pop tarts scene is scary if related to their conversations about names not mattering while harry drinks his coffee with a awkward silence then giving sharon a gift the satanic occultic symbolism is the horror something sweet gift giving instant gratification and endless realities all piled on top of each other
Unfortunately I'll have to disagree with you this time around. I saw this in theaters and was so terrified that I had to be taken to the hospital. Even now I can't enter a Walmart without the fear of my eyes wandering over a pop tart biz and making me relapse. I consider myself a little bit of a horror movie Aficionado, but nothing has or ever will instill such an inescapable dread as pop tart head
I consider myself a pretty big Silent Hill Fan. I've enjoyed most of the games, both the original Team Silent Ones as well as the later entries like Homecoming and Downpour. I went to the theater to see the first Silent Hill movie and I thought it was, and still is, probably the best Game to Film Adaptations to date. However the writing was on the wall from the start with revelations that it was going to be bad so I didn't bother with it when it came out. I didn't end up giving it a try till at least 3 years after it came out, and by then I had heard so many people talk about how terrible it was my expectations were pretty low. I made sure to watch it in 3D, since at least if it sucked the 3D would probly still be kinda cool. And I have to saw when I was done watching it, I really didn't have any big problems with it. I know it's not a good movie but really not an absolute dumpster fire like everyone claims. Non the less I am glad to hear Gans is supposedly coming back to do another one. Fingers crossed.

Keep the greatness coming. You're always very insightful!
Thank you
@@AvalancheReviews no, thank you sir. U keep the passion for true survival horror alive. The real fans appreciate it
So you guys hear the news? Christophe Gans said he is working on a new silent hill movie, (kind of like a reboot) this time being a 100% faithful to the first game, and his first choice for Harry is Carl Urban
The only good things about this movie are Yamaoka’s music, the Lakeside amusement park looks cool, and Heather’s actress looks like her. That’s all.
@ 13.24 "the worst videogame to movie adaptation ever made"
Nope.
@@orinanime Haha nice. Is he a fan of any of these games?
@@Gaff. no. Just a fan of cheap licenses.
@@orinanime Sounds about right.
Recently rewatched this. It's better than I remembered
I consider this film to be a guilty pleasure of mine.
You cannot blame everything on this movie because the first film deviated so much from the game, the writer/director here was trying to force thr story of SH3 upon a SH1 that was nothing like the game SH1.
I blame both parties.
Yeah he complains about the second film being so inaccurate and yet the first was just as bad in regards to lore. Lol
This entire production looks like a direct-to-video Hellraiser sequel.
4:25 Thought that jump scare was funny.
We need more pop tart jump scare ratings
the only part of this movie i like is the monster designs, and only because steven kostanski did the makeup and practical effects for them.
How is that this is a new video and has comments from a week ago?
all I can think of is patrons who got to see the vid as unlisted or something? quick google search haven't returned anything clear.
@@tomasmorkunas3781 yes that's right. He says patrons get videos Early
The movie is so shitty it muddied space time.
Also, Avalanche, your opinion on drunk driving is spot on, he should have got life
I was really hoping this would be the review for the first silent hill movie before this one. I try to pretend this one never happened
I discovered your channel recently by complete chance, and fell in love with your work ! I just wanted to thank you for the great survival horror content, and to submit a game for an avalanche review : rule of rose
Kit Harrington was born and raised where I live, Acton in London Uk
Thanks for reminding me that Johnny Mnemonic deserves a rewatch for no other reason than to see Dolph Lundgren utter the phrase "Jesus time!"
I saw this in theatres too when it came out and while I thought it was bad, during the time while watching it, I thought it was good.
Only movies I ever wanted to walk out of was Rob Zombies Halloween 2 and Fifty Shades of Grey.
When as re u going to do a evil within retrospective
This movie was so ridiculously full of plot holes and elements that made no sense that I almost drove myself insane trying to figure it out. Had to look up these kind of reviews just to reassure myself I wasn’t crazy, and found one of my favorite youtubers had it covered!
I hope avalanche talks about what he feels about the announcement of there being a two new SH games and a movie.
I honestly think the first SH movie is good even from just a movie stand point but because it's a VG movie everyone's image of it gets tainted
It definitely had a Lovecraftian horror feel. My personal favorite.
I gotta give you props for making through this movie. I turned it off after that scene at the mall, I couldn't even believe how bad it was
I didn’t have any problems with a convoluted and consensical plot of this film.
That showdown between the big bads at the end was more farcical than Freddy vs Jason.
What the hell are you talking about lmfao
Awesome video! Never watched the movie but I really enjoyed your commentary on it 😂
Don't ever watch it. You'll regret every minute you waste on it.
With a name like Revalations, you should come out of the movie with less questions than when you came into it.
Worst video game to movie adaptation? While I agree this film is not great, have you ever seen House of the Dead? Now there's a dumpster fire I'd love to see you review!
Pop-Tart jumpscare.
The whole nurse fetish line made me laugh
Everybody wants to be draconian until it's their ass in the defendant's chair.
When this movie came out I was so disenfranchised from the whole series I gladly never watched, and never will xD
You know nothing John sn.... Vincent.
Great vid. Glad you got around to it.
The nurses are computer generated in this movie 😑😑😑 just thought I'd throw that out there.
I was so impressed by the first SH movie that I was not only disappointed after seeing Revelations; I was straight up saddened and depressed afterwards, too.
Bro this film is amazing , the pyramid head scenes was let alone enough to make me want more
Welcome to Racoon City vs SH Revelations? YOU CHOSE...
the pop tarts scene is scary if related to their conversations about names not mattering while harry drinks his coffee with a awkward silence then giving sharon a gift the satanic occultic symbolism is the horror something sweet gift giving instant gratification and endless realities all piled on top of each other
“Appears to him through a mirror... as you do...”
Classic.
Man the amount of STUPID in this movie is unbelievable like after the pop tart jump scare it's all down silent hill from there.
