The Limes - Border with the Barbarians, Germany | Treasures of the World

The Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes - Rome's border with the barbarians - stretches almost 550 kilometers across Germany. The Limes lay in the area of ​​today's Hesse, Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria and delimited the parts of the Roman province of Rhaetia north of the Danube and the parts of Germania Superior on the right bank of the Rhine to the east. Initially just a guard route, from the middle of the second century AD the Limes was expanded into an imposing border complex with palisades, ditches, ramparts and watchtowers, and in Rhaetia it was later reinforced by a wall. The crews of the more than 900 watchtowers had visual contact. The Limes was not designed as a military bulwark, but as a sophisticated surveillance and telecommunications system.
If the barbarians invaded, the more than 120 smaller and larger forts in the back of the border could be quickly alerted with light and horn signals. Their rapid reaction troops then cut off the intruders' retreat with a pincer attack. The Limes stretched straight through the landscape for hundreds of kilometers. A tremendous engineering achievement, of which only a few traces remain. The archaeologists' excavations provide information about life on the Limes. Based on their findings, watchtowers including palisades, ditches and ramparts were also reconstructed. The earliest and probably most famous reconstruction of a Roman military facility on the Limes is the Saalburg near Bad Homburg.

The Limes as a limit to prosperity - it shows how relevant the largest archaeological monument in Europe is.
In 2005, the Upper Germanic-Rhaetian Limes was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
UNESCO has been protecting the world's most valuable natural and cultural monuments as the "Heritage of Humanity" since 1972. The television series “Treasures of the World” tells of these places in impressive images.
