He batted in the #4 slot, as a switch hitter who played great defense. I don't know the saber metrics stuff, but I personally saw Bernie get to line drives in the alley that looked like sure extra base hits and rob guys all the time. his speed was a serious defensive advantage. Another interesting fact, in the 2003 WS loss by the Yankees, Bernie led all players in avg, HR and RBI (wasn't a lot of runs, but still Bernie led both teams)
