- Charlie Brooker sets his caustic sights on video games. Expect acerbic comment as he looks at the various genres, how they have changed since their early conception and how the media represents games and gamers. Features interviews with Dara O'Briain, sitcom scribe Graham Linehan and Rab and Ryan from Consolevania.
Dara O'Briain may be missing the entire point of Gta if he's been driving around legally following the road rules
Graham Linehan was looking way too far into the Driver jumping out of the way of the car thing. Pretty sure it was only implemented to keep the rating low so they could sell their game to more people.
But... Vice City was supposed to be like a movie...?
This video is why I never finished GTAIV, and alot of new games in general. Just boring shit. Meanwhile I can spend hours in a game like Dark Souls or STALKER and not actually progress much at all but feel good about what I've accomplished in the game.
Games need to go back to being simple and not riddled with cutscenes and tutorials.
Or Heavy Rain, or MGS Or Max Payne series Or LA Noire and more. Narratives in games have really excelled in the recent years particularly last 5. I can understand Graham Linehan perception but I would only sort of agree if it was 10 or more years ago.
I remember seeing dara o brian doing a stand up routine where it was pretty much everything he said here, apart from some bits
"No Strategy Please, We're British"
AFAIK Pelit magazine in the 90s.
couldn't help but cringe at dara o'brien just shamelessly crowbarring his own stand up comedy set as it was told on stage
Yeah it reminds of an uncle who tells the same joke over and over thinking it's the first time we've heard it
I kinda like Maps by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
Price doesn't die in COD4...?
But... Price didn't die in Call of Duty 4...?
This was before mw2 where he was revealed to be alive
Stories are not improving...obviously haven't played Bioshock, Spec Ops: The Line, or Mass Effect
*****
Mafia was a 2003 game, if I remember correctly. There are probably tons of examples, but eh...
***** And the original Bioshock was already out. Additionally, I don't understand why the guy in the video was making the point that stories in games are bad, and then gave examples of good stories in games.
Uh... clearly you haven't read a book. These are not even examples of decent stories, just ones you have investment in the lore for, which is not the same thing.
A game would have to tie emotional response to game-play in a meaningful way in which no title yet to my knowledge has really managed unless you count visual novels. Only having any emotional development in cutscenes is pathetic, using film as a crutch when none exists in gameplay. Cutscenes are just terrible in the first place.
Warren Cash In my experience, Bioshock did this. The "A man chooses a slave obeys" scene made my jaw drop as the twist was revealed. Many people have said that Journey has effected them emotionally, and Mass Effect and Spec Ops: The Line.
@procedural55
To express my original point in another way, I can play the saxophone...badly. Better than you? Most likely, in fact probably better than 99% of the population of the planet who have never even tried to
Does that mean I should be on TV or people should be buying recordings of me playing? If I was on BBC1 for an hour every weekend at prime time playing crappy blues you wouldn't dream of questioning it right? Because you couldn't do it any better and that must mean it's brilliant?
@lockoshamface
I'm pretty sure the reason he can remember the name of the boss is because he researched it for the material. He does the exact same routine almost word for word in his stand up show.
Not saying he didn't play Gears of War, I'm just pretty sure he's not recalling the name off the top of his head. I played Gears of War and I can't even remember what the bad guys were called or the names of any of the characters.
@CommanderMantis
The day the world suddenly understands that you don't need to be able to replicate something to be able to discern it's quality is the day I can die happy.
I don't know how to make wine. That's doesn't stop me from being able to tell the difference between a good bottle of wine and a bad one. The ability to create something does not automatically give you a greater understanding of why it is good.
i'm not sure why some of you seem to be berating dara for what he's saying. i guess you're all under the assumption in games things simply have to be EARNED, but then you're just using the wrong verb. movies are seen, books are read, and games are PLAYED, not earned. there doesn't necessarily have to be a challenge, just an action. it's like the book suddenly turned into gibberish and told you "the book is encrypted! decipher each chapter!" and suddenly there's a challenge. and just as BS.
@procedural55
Yeah, that's a nice sound bite. Unfortunately it's bollocks, isn't it. I don't have the skills required to build a steam engine, that doesn't mean I don't understand how it works. In fact, thanks to people like the one you are quoting I probably have a better understanding of how a steam engine works than the people who originally built them 300 years ago
@somberlight To artsy? Really? Well, maybe in such a mainstream game. For me its just a nice song. It's not an all time favorite of mine but I kinda like it. I especially like the drums in it. I think the drums in most popular songs are totally forgettable, uncreative, unimaginative and could be played as well by a drum computer.
@blenderpanzi, if thats your thing, then thats your thing and i can't touch that, you know that. for reference, im more into ... ehh.. traditional female approach like ... hmm.. portishead comes to mind, check "roseland live" for the idea. "sour times" or "roads" is a perfect example from that record.
Graham says Driver is more realistic but in Vice City people will jump out of the way if they have enough time to perform a jump. If I'm driving a car at 100mph and you are less than a meter away of course I'm going to hit you.
Oh and Driver, just reminded me like that guy said :D Also Driver: San Francisco, it's a bit bizarre, but it's so much like the original and after Driv3r and Parallel Lines....well...it's just a huge improvement!
Perhaps, but I find the way he dismisses GTA VC the annoying part. Not saying it has the best story, but compared to Modern Warfare it's Nobel Prize winning material...
@blenderpanzi. to each our own i guess, i didn't. its.. ehh.. too.. ehh.. artsy? i dunno, i cant put my finger to it but i get a massive case of ..BLEH! from it
Or get him to stop talking... he dismisses GTA Vice City for bad story telling, but then holds up Modern Warfare as good example because of a moustache!?!?
Huh, that's odd. The new bog-standard Wolfenstein gets a whole section and RPGs and Strategy get a line? At least Adventure games didn't get the shaft that bad.
i find it hard to believe that linehan doesn't understand that the older gtas were all about parody. he seems to think that people took them seriously.
silly Dara, speed up and drive recklessly til you get to the toll booth then slow down at the booth,
then speed up once the bar is up all the way.
@WithCompany The guy's clearly not too stupid to play it, he's got a degree in theoretical physics! Although he's evidently not very good at them ;p
Anyone else instantly google the spanish influenza, hoping to stumble upon some sort of zombie outbreak history kept quiet? Only me? oh ok..
and many others :) It's probably true that for every good game story there are like 50 crap ones, but theres enough out there.
Oh man, he got his ass kicked by the beginnings of GTA4 and Gears of War, I'd love to see this guy play Dark Souls.
enjoyed growing up with GTA massive game play,it's for adults ;o)) played enough games,fresh air games are the best
I play games for the story. I've found that I also only porn parodies because I already know the character arcs.
I love Mass effect and gaming, but characters and plot are still very bad against a good movie or tv show.
Awwww, that sitcom guy is adorable! "Why are you talking like that to her? I don't want to play you."
Ugh.. just lost a lot of respect for Dara O'Briain because he wanted to play a beastie boys song...
Get Graham Linehan to play the Uncharted series for a good story =)
I understand his point about content but ,sadly for him, that is just the nature of a game...
I don't think reviews can be "gay", as they aren't living organisms.
niko went in an office one time
he did shoot someone in the face but thats not the point
Uncharted is a very good call, but only second best. the best is the Fallout series :)
Strategy games were one of Brooker's specialties at PC Zone in the latter half of the nineties. He's exaggerating for comic effect.
+Applemask Love to hear that, since this all heavily hits ah... well, it's like everyone is misunderstanding what a game even is.
Maybe Dara would enjoy games like Animal Crossing more than Gears Of War or GTA.
Broken sword blows the idea of games not having a good story out of the water.
@CommanderMantis Sitcom writing is more difficult than one would assume.
Ehh, strategy games are a lot like marmite, I find.
I don't believe that Dara O'briain is that bad at video games.
6:03 Sorry Mr Brooker but I have to admit I'm a little Hitler.
ME3 also has ultra easy mode so you arent denied content.
Wait 'til Dara hears about day-one, on-disc dlc...
10:00 Gabe? I think he means Chet.
The beserkers a She and she doesn't see anything.
I hadn't thought that way about Rock Band, huh.
All your base are belong to us
See, whenever I do that, I feel like a time-voyeur
I get in this kinda creepy mode and I think "I know how to manipulate your life"
makes me feel kinda creepy
:'(
I haz teh sads now.
I really liked the story in Alan Wake
Vice City is the best of the best :D
8:15 ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US.
Zero wing!
"Don't you move Bitch"!!! ahahaha
"ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US"
All your base are belong to us xD
"gabe who wrote left four dead"
ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US!
@AstraVex
Or Mass Effect.
apart from the ending of 3
Portal is one of the best games ever made in my opinion.....a fun game that needs you to think a bit, and hugely atmospheric. I love the music too, it's so dark and ambient.
In fairness he held it up as a good example for how much you related to the character with the moustache, and how it was strong enough that it was affecting when that character died. The 'tache just made him all the more epic.
I am a little armchair hitler.
or even bastion
maaAAaaaaaaAaAAAaaaAAAaapsss
Ped's jump out of the way on VC sometimes though :(
@Kanonite naw
what does lyotard or wittgenstein have to do with physics?
This Dara O'Brian guy should try Touhou.
Memories about how bad endings can be, sure :D
Portal o/
whats the music when the irish bloke is talking about the storyline?
I'm writing from the future! It's American Idiot by Green Day
@@LawrenceBarratt i waited 7 years for a wrong answer. I hate you...
@@babscabs1987 haha my mistake, thought you meant the bit where he's discussing Guitar Hero! Not sure about the others, hopefully you don't have to wait another 7 years!
@@LawrenceBarratt i meant the classical music at the end when he's talking about driver and GTA Vice City
7:50 until 11:45 Graham Linehan just makes an incredible amount of sense.
He doesn't make any sense nowadays.
The guy talking about gta 4 doesnt know that you can go on the wrong side of the road and speed in gta so long as you dont hit any police or kill someone.
I know I just posted on the part one of this video, but I thought I'd give it another try, but this part annoyed me even more. It's horribly subjective and the people talking about the games seem to miss the point of the entire gaming genre.
That's racist to reviews.
