      @@prodbyjharee This. Down 10dB at 23Hz means calibration software can just barely correct the response (before considering the room) and you lose 10dB of headroom everywhere else.

    Hey so I just bought this sub and paired it with my kali audio LP-6 monitors. I somehow have less bass than I had before. I followed all the directions and hooked it up right, blue light is solid and everything. I turned off the studio monitors and just left the sub on and played some 808's through it. There is sound coming out but it's just incredibly quiet. I even tried cranking the gain and still crazy quiet. Any idea of what's going on here?

  • @ANSWERTHECALLOFJESUSCHRIST

    I haven't dealt with Kali Audio, but I haven't trusted the company ever since I saw how they rate their speakers, just like Pyramid and other bottom of the barrel audio companies.
    Calling it a 1000W subwoofer is not a lie, but it's a misplaced truth.
    They use the peak power number so it looks more impressive to buyers, instead of using the continuous power number, which matters the most, and is 500 watts according to them.
    It's like bragging, for example, that you can bench-press 315 pounds.
    Sure, that is your max weight for a few reps. You didn't lie, but it looks more impressive in practice when you show you can bench-press 225 pounds for 12 reps even if the weight is less.
    I highly respect companies that aren't afraid to market their products upfront by their continuous power ratings. They have nothing to fear because they're confident in their products, that not only will they deliver, but they will also over-deliver.
    Not hating ot being negative, but just letting people know that the practice is shady, has always been shady, and serves no purpose to customers.

    • @kaliaudio
      @kaliaudio 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      It's a fair point about power ratings. We are positioning this as both a studio and live sub, and all of the PA subs in this category list their maximum power over continuous. So if you're doing an apples-to-apples comparison vs. an EV or Behringer sub, this will be the same number.
      We are very careful not to inflate our specs. When we say 123dB, we mean it. When we say 23Hz, we mean it. We encourage independent verification of the specs that we publish, and we will be sending a unit to Pro Sound Testing in Indiana next week so that we can publish 3rd party CLF data.

      @@kaliaudio Thanks SO MUCH for responding! I respect and admire that as a company, you're paying attention to the concerns of potential customers. This has certainly increased my confidence. God bless! 😁👍
      EDIT: Since you mentioned that it can be used as a live sub, will one of these subwoofers output enough bass to at least noticeably fill a small church with 7 foot tall ceilings?
      I am the audio/video guy at a really small church, and I have already convinced my pastor of spending on proper equipment.

    • @brunosco
      @brunosco 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kaliaudio Someone mentioned the 23Hz were at -10dB, while the lowest frequency at +/-3dB was actually 30Hz. Isn’t that misleading?

    • @kaliaudio
      @kaliaudio 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@brunosco 23 Hz at - 10dB is exactly what we publish. There are several reasons for publishing both a +/- 3 dB number and a -10 number. +/-3 lets you know how low the subwoofer plays flat in an anechoic setting. -10 is a gauge of the lowest usable frequency that the sub is capable of. That lower number makes more sense in real-world conditions, since interaction with walls, the floor, and even the ceiling will help to reinforce the low end. So even though it only plays flat down to 30 Hz in a test environment, you can reasonably expect it to get down to about 23 Hz at reference level when the sub is playing in a room.

    Is the 23hz with room gain? Thinking about putting one in each front corner, but I want to get to 100dB, maybe 110 at 20hz. Maybe 4?
    Is there any hiss on this? (Shouldn't be, as the low pass filter should get rid of higher pitched noise.)
    Also... What Genelecs and Focal's can it pair with? I have a pair of 8260 monitors.

    • @kaliaudio
      @kaliaudio 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      23 Hz is the -10 response. You're not really going to get the driver to get lower than that. The woofer itself doesn't make any noise, but there is some noise on the passthrough.
      This will pair well with any Focal or Genelec monitor with a max SPL under 117 dB

      I wonder (perhaps it's complex enough topic for an entire video) how do you approach (mind-wise) videos like this one - kind of review/endorsement/opinion thingy:
      it's rather obvious companies do want make the best product but earn money and fun further developments, being genuinely "worried" about your opinions, as you can either help them or harm them long-term;
      while on the other hand you seem "overly" hyped about the gear (which I believe is not the matter of false marketing, but rather an honest joy of getting hands on new gear);
      what's your attitude to potentially receiving a gear truly marvellous which would make your current gear an obsolete/joke (literally)?
      past years I've discussed with many manufacturers/developers an increasingly more difficult situation of deciding whether to "grab" new enthusiast people to employ, or keep them aside as knowledgeable potential customers - what's your opinion about this matter?

      Same thing with lower frequency response. It takes a lot of power to get all the way down to 20, which ends up being costly. As in all of our products, we're aiming for a balance of performance and cost to give our users the most value for their money.

Its hard enough getting two speakers to work well in a room let alone adding a 3rd one and also making sure its working in conjunction with the first two. The added crossover has negative consequences too. Finally, as a hip hop guy, I've never felt a need for it when a good pair of 8 inch monitors can do the job. I just put a bit of engineer's eq on my JBLs (a 2dB smiley face eq to counter my personal taste) and my mixes are translating well.

    OMG Kali, don’t give a -10dB rating as your marketing default! It’s a crap industry spec that should be abandoned and only acts to reel in people who don’t understand how specs work. Not something i want to see from a company I’d prefer to respect. Also, where’s your frequency response graph? The rest of the specs are meaningless without it!

    • @kaliaudio
      @kaliaudio 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      We've got a sub cued up to send to Pro Sound Testing to produce the frequency response graph.
      I hear you about the -10. Unfortunately, this is the spec many of our competitors use, especially in the PA space. I'll point out that we also have the +/-3dB spec (30 Hz) published right below. Our goal is to allow apples-to-apples comparisons vs. our competitors so that people can choose the right system.

    • @glenallan6279
      @glenallan6279 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I hear that. I work for a pro audio speaker company and the industry is a pain. We can easily publish only the -3 rating because the subs are stupid good down to the low 20s, but recently we caved and started listing peak SPL because of being afraid average people would see our numbers and think we weren't competitive. So i get the pressure. It's another fake metric that needs to go away as well.
      At least you do put the -3 rating in, which i can't say is the case for not just a few of the other makers. Even worse is when they put the rating at -10 but don't actually say it's that until you read the fine print (not in the specs).

    I'll be honest. was hoping this would have been a bit cheaper - it's double the price of a set of LP6's, I can't justify that expense - why try and do everything? Just be a good studio sub for the LP6 and maybe save some money.

    • @stevenswall
      @stevenswall 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      How cheap? They's probably have to make it smaller and go less deep too, which starts eating into the point of a subwoofer. What extra features would you remove that go beyond "studio sub."

    • @AndyNicholson
      @AndyNicholson 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@stevenswall The power for starters, it's like you trying to open a door with a sledge hammer, totally not required. You can't tell me that marketing it for LP6's with 1000 watts of power makes any sense. The crappy old sub I'm using with them right now is 250 watts and it NEVER goes above 25%.
      "There are some great 18-inch subs out there, but the 10 and 12 inch subs that are available don’t play below 40 Hertz" - absolute twoddle. I'm not sure if it's any good, but Presonus Temblor 10 gets good reviews and goes to 20 Hz at a little over half the price, M-Audio BX10 is cheaper and goes to 20, and they both have similar features. My cheap-ass one goes to 28.
      The JBL sub is the equivelent of a single pair of 306 mk2's. Yamaha on the same level for a pair of 7" monitors, but this is TWICE the cost of a pair of LP6's - how is that even competitive?

    • @NickBirge
