Billy Joel actually heard this song one night in a dream he had and after he awoke he recorded the melody and words on a handheld tape recorder he had beside his bed.
I discovered Billy Joel’s genius when I was 11 in 1977. The two songs that crystallized in my mind as life affirming were Anthony’s Song (Movin’ Out) and My Life. These masterfully written, performed and produced songs led me to other songs like Just The Way You Are, Don’t Ask Me Why, It’s Still Rock-n-Roll To Me, all the way to the iconic An Innocent Man album. Billy Joel sang about pretty much everything in the human condition. The song Second Wind was an anti suicide song. The song Why Should I Worry was inspired. I was surprised when Billy Joel stated in an interview that the song Uptown Girl was written as an orchestral piece. I would love to hear and orchestra play Uptown Girl. Who knows? Maybe Billy Joel might compose orchestral pieces someday.
I have a memory from late 1993, my pops was holding my little sister dancing to this song when our mom was gone. He put this on the record player. I can remember looking up at them laughing and smiling. REST in peace ✌️
This reminds me of my memory with Message in a Bottle by The Police. My dad died in 2016 during Christmas time, 8 days after my Birthday. Even though it's my favorite time of the year, It's always hard in that aspect. My Dad and my uncle look very similar (as some brothers do lol) and Christmas 2022 rolls around. There were 2 musicians that my dad especially liked. U2 and The Police. So when they gave my uncle a record player to play all the Albums in the attic, quite a few of my dad's as he left some of his belongings when coming to the U.S. so when they brought out The Police's album "Reggatta de Blanc" and played Message in the Bottle I couldn't help but go to another room and cry, it was happy crying though.

It was in beginning of June 1994. I was driving on Interstate 89N, just passing West Hartford heading to Barre, Vermont. It was already after midnight and I had realised nobody in the USA was speeding like in Sweden (25% över the limit). Consqenly I was far behind my schedule and becoming dangerously tired. Then River of Dreams came on the radio. The song was like an energy drink, I became alert again and reached Barre safe and sound. When I was about 3 or 4 I would try my hardest to turn on VH1 and jam to this song when it would come on. This and We Didn't Start the Fire are my two favorites from Billy Joel.
This was the first cassette tape my dad got and I listened to it in my room in my sony walkman front to back every day for weeks before he finally asked if it was ok for him to pop it in the new tape player in his truck😂. I loved Billy Joel from the first time I heard him on the record player in our house when I was 6. It's been 30 years since those days. I just stumbled across this and it's like I went back in time. And I have always thought this song was great so maybe a dream but it had it for yrs and yrs...to this day i still have this crazy memory and remember this song!!!
This is my fave Billy Joel song. Used to play a lot when I was kid, always liked the image it produced in my mind :) The backing vocals are excellent too
One of my fondest memories of this song was singing it at the top of my lungs while working a solo shift at a grocery store. I was downstacking banana boxes and slinging them around like nothing

we're doing this song for show choir at my school and I have a solo during the intro with all the oooh's and aah's
July 2020 still remember every word ♡ Thank You Billy Joel
When I was about 3 or 4 I would try my hardest to turn on VH1 and jam to this song when it would come on. This and We Didn't Start the Fire are my two favorites from Billy Joel.
My lovely friend Carol just sent me this song ❤️ We're both awake at 2 am. Her in Brissie, me in Sydney. Carol, I love you ♥️♥️
My favorite Billy Joel song and one of my childhood favorite songs.
Music is like a time capsule.
This is the only Billy Joel song that I do like...
Piano man is great too
Since I was like 15 i have sworn I have this memory of this day and I remember hearing this song in it and not one person in my family has ever remembered this day or memory or anything like that day happening or anything like it at all!!! And I have always thought this song was great so maybe a dream but it had it for yrs and yrs...to this day i still have this crazy memory and remember this song!!!
This is my fave Billy Joel song. Used to play a lot when I was kid, always liked the image it produced in my mind :) The backing vocals are excellent too
Billy's voice is heal and rehabilitation to my soul
This song from Billy is great.
Billy Joel is my main man. Simply the best.
I don't think i'll ever get tired of that intro
One of my all time fave 90s gems..such a classic for me..loved it here in the Philippines..👍💿📀💖🇵🇭
Just now I woke up in the middle of the night and got this song stuck in my head. :)
One of my fondest memories of this song was singing it at the top of my lungs while working a solo shift at a grocery store. I was downstacking banana boxes and slinging them around like nothing
I absolutely LOVE this song!!! Mr. Joel has made great music but this is truly my favorite, I never tire of listening to it.
I just had a dream last night and this song was playing as the theme song 🎵 thank you
