JFA would of been 21/25 if there wasn't 4 drops one should have been a TD....but either way....still put up 51....defense was dominant and I loved it...can't wait to listen all week long on the KREF app....long live the REF-ARMY -Beachbum Sooner
Defense did good. Love how they try to punch the ball out when tackling. I think the jury is still out with our secondary, because they weren't tested. They might not even be tested against Houston after seeing the score of their game. I think Lewis gave up a bit of a chunk play, and Mckinzie gave a bit of one around the outside. I didn't like seeing Mckinzie and Stutsman both whiffing on tackling the QB on one play, but Downs saved it by punching the ball out afterwards. Did anyone get flashbacks to that Florida game a few years ago when Lewis threw that guys shoe? Offense? I'm not worried about Arnold's abilities like some unreasonably are. I think he may be slow at processing and making decisions, but that should be expected for a _new_ college quarterback. He still displayed great skills. The part that's worrisome is obviously the o-line. I don't even have to go in to depth on that point. Still frustrated seeing our RB's running into the back of linemen for almost no gain, instead of attempting to bounce around when there's absolutely no gap in the middle to run through. It's like last year all over again in regards to that.. But Barnes, Franklin, and Tatum were able to get decent chunks once they were allowed to run outside. Thompson didn't show himself to be as good as people have been trying to sunshine pump ever since the depth chart dropped. Had a few drops. And he mind-bogglingly failed to get an easy first down when Arnold made that great pitch to him. All he had to do was step forward, but he instead went sideways straight towards the ref and a defender. Hester wasn't starter quality. Though Bauer had a TD reception, I'm surprised he didn't play a bigger role, especially given the lack of success with Hester and Thompson. The offense benefited greatly off of all of those short field positions they were given. They weren't as successful with sustaining longer drives, and if they had a set-back on the drive, it killed the whole drive.. And obviously 1/12 on 3rd down is atrocious and unacceptable. Especially against Temple. It may be that Vegas was accurate in their pre-season win total projection, by how the offense looked last night. They'll get crushed by Tennessee if they don't improve.
Gotta say, that was extremely well said and written. Thank you! And you're right, they MUST get better on the o-line before Tennessee. I think this defense is good enough to keep them in every game but they can't get manhandled up front and expect to win that game. Or the week after that, the week after that and the next week after that, etc.
@@tylermccomas08 Thank you! I appreciate you taking the time to read it, as it was lengthy. And I fully agree with what you said. I'm hoping for the best, but mentally preparing myself for the worst.
Tyler good analysis. I thought the pass coverage for OU was a little weak when it came to short to intermediate passes. Their QB at best was average and was still able to complete passes with guys wide open. Maybe OU was playing a basic package and didn't want to show their hand. Better get ready for Tennessee because those boys can play. Their defensive line can play.
Thanks as always, Chief. OU was pretty vanilla on defense. And that may be the case until the Tennessee. But we’re going to see some really interesting and different front and alignments. It feels like they’ll be as good as we hoped on defense. And yes, the offensive line has to improve before the VOLS come to town. Going to be extremely tough to move the ball consistently if the performance is anything like it was Friday. Just not good enough.
I mean its pretty obvious we closed the playbook after the first 2 drives and decided to not put alot on tape. I thought Jackson looked sharp just had some drops by WRs and had some plays where dude's cut back and lost yards instead of cutting up field. Running game needs to iron stuff out but I think they will Barnes and Tatum are gonna be hard to keep off the field.
All fair and good points. Tatum caught my eye, too. He’s a stud. Won’t be surprised if we only see his role increase as the weeks go by. Could end up being their best back.
Play the best players on the offensive line. Thats gotta get better and fast. Defense looked really good. Wide receivers gotta get better. Burks is a badass. I liked Tatum and Franklin running the ball. Keep Hawkins ready incase we need him. Gonna be a blast to watch this year. The biggest obvious problem is getting the offensive line going. Get em right Bill. BOOMER!!
This season is largely going to be dictated by how much better the offensive line can get. Because I like this defense and Deion Burks a lot. But they're going to have to consistently run the ball. Obviously. But the o-line will be the major talking point going into next week.
Concerned with the offense as a whole. Spencer Brown shouldn’t see the field again for a long time. Hester and Thompson, who we heard good things about this offseason, couldn’t separate and dropped passes. No explosive runs until garbage time. Not sure what’s going on.
No arguments from me on Spencer Brown. And on Hester and Thompson, they had an excellent opportunity to really show out and solidify themselves within the WR core. They didn't do that. I would guess Nic Anderson is back next week and we'll see what role those two guys have after some drops on Friday.
All of a sudden we have one of the best defense in the SEC when we were terrible in the weak Big 12. We always play good defense early and then collapse. Every year we say this. You're funny.
And I like that! Nice to see. I really think Bauer Sharp is going to be a big part of the passing game. Especially as wide receivers (unfortunately) keep getting hurt.
First game of the year and BV ain’t showing his hand. This was little more than a scrimmage and next week is gonna be a joke!! Houston looked terrible against UNLV. Their QB is slow, indecisive and generally inept. Their offensive and defensive lines are porous and we might see our coaches step it up a notch.
It was the defense 8 in the box.. the line played just fine... to run after run up the middle..when the defense knew.. and Arnold didn't have pressure on him the whole game... you are wrong
Are Davis BEVEL IN SPENCER BROWN CLONES??? Honestly, we were all led to believe that everybody was comfortable with the development of the offensive line came directly from BV??? The narrative is, they are injured and banged up and they are. The more important question and the cliché that everyone uses we trust in Bill should we trust the talent level maybe it’s more concerning

Well technically, the offense only put up 44 points. 😅
Thanks for watching! Appreciate you. Burks was fantastic but would like to see a lot more consistency from the other WR’s against Houston.

Keltner was especially good considering two pat snap/holds were off and he had to adjust mid kick. We have to clean that up.
SEC Special Teams Player of the Week!

The play calling was blah, O line trash, running backs average. Receivers drops, this could be a very long year
and it was the first game of the season...........
one stat that I really hated was the Running Backs had ZERO Receptions
Burks did
@@Wes-b7v He is a Wide Receiver
I would guess that changes as we move forward. Because I think Sawchuk, and others, could be good options in the passing game.

Very excited about the defense
Same. Opponent was bad but forcing the most turnovers in 21 years is incredible.
Concerned with the offense as a whole. Spencer Brown shouldn’t see the field again for a long time. Hester and Thompson, who we heard good things about this offseason, couldn’t separate and dropped passes. No explosive runs until garbage time. Not sure what’s going on.
Well they said it was a vanilla game plan so we hope that’s just it

We got a big ol TE that can get open and has hands!!!
And I like that! Nice to see. I really think Bauer Sharp is going to be a big part of the passing game. Especially as wide receivers (unfortunately) keep getting hurt.
Better hope that offense can score 35+ points versus Tennessee to have a chance.

Taylor, Tatum= HOPEFULLY JOE MIXON!!!
He’s going to play a lot. Really liked what I saw.
We won't know how good the defense is for a couple more weeks. But it's safe to say that the offense sucks.
It was the defense 8 in the box.. the line played just fine... to run after run up the middle..when the defense knew.. and Arnold didn't have pressure on him the whole game... you are wrong
What game dd you watch? Arnold had someone hitting him on half the passes or more
Bs he got sack 3 times that's pressure

The criticism on Spencer Brown is absolutely fair. It’s just not good enough. Count me as one that’s really concerned about the o-line.
Couldn’t agree more. We heard they’d be ready and they clearly aren’t.
