Join soprano Ermonela Jaho as she discusses her upcoming role as Cio-Cio-San in Puccini’s beautiful opera. Find out more at www.roh.org.uk/...
The event, hosted by Head Staff Director at Royal Opera House Amy Lane, will offer an in-depth look at Puccini’s heartbreaking opera and its history on stage at Covent Garden.
Lane will be joined by the star of this year’s revival, Albanian soprano Ermonela Jaho. Jaho sings the role of the tragic heroine Cio-Cio-San, the young Japanese bride of dashing American officer Lieutenant Pinkerton, who finds her romantic idyll shattered when he deserts her shortly after their marriage.
In addition, journalist Lesley Downer will offer a closer look at Japan in the 19th century and the role of the Sadayakko, also known as a Japanese geisha or dancer.
The Insights event will include several performance excerpts including the opera’s famous flower duet and 'Un bel di vedremo'.

Pinkerton says "Giocattolo" . Butterfly for him is a Toy....how you can you not blame him?

It is a story of a pure girl who lived in Bushido.

We should remember that, for two hundred and fifty years, Japan isolated itself from the rest of the world, with no foreigner being allowed to set foot on Japanese soil. This situation came to an end in 1853 when four USA gunboats arrived to force them to open their country to trade.

A lot of blah blah....everything of course is true but any soprano who sang or sings Butterfly grasps that by instinct....it takes a little bit more than that to be a credible Butterfly. Only a few gave an utterly convincing portrayal of Cio-Cio-san....Toti dal Monte, Maria Callas, Renata Scotto, Mirella Freni........by the way, horrendous rendering of "Fiorito asil"....

exactly, her talk is like a high school girl’s reaction of a TV show. shallow and boring.

so boring and shallow. is this royal opera covent garden? I thought this is a chi-chat about a daytime soup opera. no actual analysis of music whatsoever. they did not even scratch the surface of this opera.
