It's not important, it's shown later, and showing it now is irrelevant, that's why the 2011 anime left it out. Everyone i've seen who gets told to react to either the anime or the chapter, either regret it, or don't care about the change. Waste of time.

It provides context for why gon begins his journey as a hunter in the first place, so I don't think it's a waste of time. It isn't "required" but it does fill in a lot of blanks down the road.

Either way, the 1999 or Manga version of events doesn't fit with how the 2011 version did things, and how things play out. Waiting until they show it during the CA arc is best for the 2011 version. No one remembers that character from episode 1 enough to care about him returning, not to mention he looks completely different in this version, causing even more disconnect. I stand by it being a waste of time. The last person I saw who reacted to that actually made a poll. The vast majority said to skip it, but they did it anyway, didn't find it necessary, and then they got spoiled on a later episode regarding that character. Nothing positive was gained.
