Literally 1 or 2 people mention Peter Erskine on drums! The guy is playing his ass off throughout, and he's a fantastic drummer. Sad I never got to see them live!!
Nothing but great drummers in WR but Erskine brought a whole different feel to the group, to me. So tight, focused and light. Nobody ever sounded like that.
@@musictoddstuartfletcher yeah man he had a cool sound! I was lucky enough to meet him once at Berklee right around the time he recorded part of the Steely Dan album "Still Alive In America"! We corresponded a bit through Email after, nice guy.
How great Zawinul was. The mid keyboard is a reversed one on the first half of Black Market, with lower keys on the right and higher keys on the left. A beast.
Seeing this truly amazing jazz ensemble ,was an incredible experience for me I believe it was the Black Market Tour.Again totally amazing, these musicians are or were a quartet of extreme musical excellence,no doubt!...
I was listening them in Helsinki same year. Fantastick band. 1982 I meet Jaco in Pori Jazz Festival and it was very funny. We weer drinkin a couple drinks and Jaco tells me his Finnish mother. Grate guy was him. R.I.P
Live at Stadthalle (City Hall) Offenbach/Germany, Sept 29, 1978 53:14 Jaco Pastorius' bass solo: Dolores / Portrait of Tracy / Third stone from the sun
Joe famously inverted the control voltage for pitch from one of the ARP2600’s so one of the keyboards would play “normally”left to right, low to high pitch. The inverted keyboard played high to low, inverted from normal. What a genius!
Joe’s lead synth appears to be tuned “high to low” (moving from left to right)! That’s wild! As many times as I’ve seen this song performed, I never noticed that!
Joe told keyboard magazine that he experimented with a reversed keyboard and composed this specific melody from “Black Market” on it. He said that it was useful to challenge himself creatively.
JACÓ PASTORIOS FABULOSO UM DOs maiores baixistas do mundo pena ter tido uma trajetória muito breve wayne ja se foi e Zawilnul tambem fica o legado dessa que foi uma das maiores do jazz moderno
Saw this great band at the Manchester Apollo in 1978 (still got the Tee-shirt). Unfortunately I was sat near Jaco’s bass speaker and that was all I heard.
One of the greatest bands of all time. Back in the day (I'm 68) even my friends who didn't particularly like Jazz loved their music. Not even 3 minutes in and a commercial? Piss on this channel.
Can't just sit back and relax because damn advertising!!! Can't TH-cam just put adverts at beginning and end instead of interrupting every bloody music video?!
That's his famous "bass of doom". He modified a fretted bass by pulling the frets out and filling the gaps with epoxy, so it looks like it still has frets.

If I am not mistaken, Erskine called his drum solo “Fred and Jack” in honor of his two grandfathers.
@@davidzack8875 ok
Jaco had a time machine, he was so far ahead of everyone else.
Jaco Pastorius /Wayne Shorter/ Joe Zawinul/Peter Erskine/Manalo Badrena

I seen Zawinal Syndicate and Victor Bailey did his song Can it be done, his tribute to Jaco, back in early 2000's Western Australia.
Listen to 830 live he plays his arse off🎉

He was a real genius!
His solo a few minutes near the end of "A Remark You Made" nearly knocked me out of my chair! What an incredible musician!
This is one of the many WR tours I saw. It was incredible. They played looong. It was GREAT! RIP Joe, Jaco, Wayne
Wow “A Remark You Made”!!!
The musicianship unparalleled.
Absolutely incredible. Thank you so much for posting this. 55 years young, have been listenig to WR since I was a kid. What a way to start a Friday.
I've been a fan of this great band since '73 when I heard the "Sweetnighter" LP.

Saw Weather Report in 81 with Jaco at the Palace in Columbus Ohio. Awesome show!
Yup saw them on the same tour only at Pine Knob, MI. Go blue! 💙
Saw the same tour (I think) in Perth Western Australia with Jaco. His bass solo drove the audience crazy

Joe Zawinul is playing the melody in the opposite direction on the keyboard, as he was explaining in the documentary on him.
Joe famously inverted the control voltage for pitch from one of the ARP2600’s so one of the keyboards would play “normally”left to right, low to high pitch. The inverted keyboard played high to low, inverted from normal. What a genius!
@@bobfrye448 Yes, as per the Zawinul "documentary".

Joe told keyboard magazine that he experimented with a reversed keyboard and composed this specific melody from “Black Market” on it. He said that it was useful to challenge himself creatively.
He inspired me to do the same on a Roland D-50 back in the 80s. It is indeed rewarding - you play quite different solo lines.

In Slang Jaco reminds of Jimi Hendrix.
That’s no accident. He quotes “Third Stone” extensively.
