In terms of why the top speed could be down compared to your IRL footage, I could very much be wrong on this, but it could be due to the fact that the GT3s in iRacing uses the IMSA GTD/GTD Pro specifications for the GT3s and not the Fanatec GT SRO specifications that you may find on ACC. You need speakers and a subwoofer to have goosebumps from the sounds in iRacing. Headsets are no good. The sounds are all recorded directly from the cars, but the tone in a headset is just more dull. When I turn up my speakers to a level of the real life GT3, the sounds in itacing are the best! But then my neighbour is living next to a race track...
To be fair, almost all the really fast cool cars in iracing have the grossest sounding rev. While driving and shifting it sounds better, but revving sounds like ASS for ALL cars that have any speed.
I've raced GT4 in real life, and I have thousands of hours in iRacing and ACC. This video is a VERY good demonstration of the SEVERE weaknesses of iRacing that the devs refuse to fix. iRacing does some things well, but the things it does horribly can ruin a race in a flash. Tires do not go from 100 to 0 instantly from a little wheel spin, the tire slip physics are maybe the worst of any racing sim or game, cars are inherently stable, iRacing you can spin out at 10 MPH lol The cars also seem far more on rails than other sims, and the issue with this to me is that once the cars are unstable (wheel spin, lock ups, oversteer, understeer), the cars have an entirely different set of physics that make them unpredictable and too random to catch often times. Racecars are meant to be driven on the limit, and they feel good on the limit. iRacing feels unpredictable and bad on the limit. By far the worst thing about iRacing though is the fanboys on the forums and in discussions that can't accept any criticism.
It's a great video, and I appreciate the transparency. I would love to know from your experience how those GT3 cars handle cornering and breaking to what I experience in iRacing. I sometimes feel the car grip does not respond even at low speeds, like 70kmps. I feel my sports car in real life turns more in some scenarios. The second question is breaking. If breaking hard in a gt3 car, with the presence of an ABS, the tires are not very exhausted, and when the speed is around 20kmps, the car still takes time to stop. I guess this is much on unrealistic issues from latency to limitations so that the simulator stays within limits. In my normal sports car, at 20kmps, if I press hard to break, the car stops near instantly. I appreciate iRacing because it is so complex to simulate the physics while keeping the cars within their limits. For example, in real life, the car's top speed, acceleration, handling, and all road conditions should be maintained. This is why, while maintaining those limitations, something unrealistic happens. The future of simulation will be a brand new engine completely based ON AI-no need to do any math.
Gotta agree. I do love how alive the tyre feels in LMU and the braking at least in the gte makes alot of sense. Looking forward to comparing acc and LMU gt3s.

Yo James great video. I was wondering if there's anyway i could get a hold of your Simucube software FFB settings? Having driven real GT3's, i would assume you have some decent settings..
iRacing need to get Race Sim Studios to sort out the audio. The RSS Assetto Corsa GT3 mods sound amazing and I prefer them to ACC. I can’t comment on realism but I find iRacing more natural than ACC. AC probably beats them both but I spend almost all my sim racing time in iRacing. If iRacing could address the sound and tyre issues they’d have the complete package.
@@Jaaames Nice! Their attention to detail is amazing. I have all their mods. Although I did spend a good hour trying to find a mystery rattle in my headset only to realise they had modelled the gear stick shake on the 1970 F1 car. I should have read the manual. 🤣🤣🤣
I maybe a bit off topic but how do you get +-180 fps on iracing ? Your graphic settings look very nice, what kind of magic settings or hardware do you have ? Thanks 😊
Its always very interesting seeing this perspective. Gotta give it to these companies making the sim racing games. They may not be absolutely perfect but it does give it a close feeling!
The sound is missing a bit of that anti-lag sound between some shifts. I also think a bit of EQ tweaking could bring out the barky, edgy sound of the real motor. They honestly might have had to mellow it out for ear fatigue reasons though.
Ref the audio, perhaps what we hear on the video of your IRL driving is being distorted by the microphone. It is peaking above 0.0db which compresses the wav file. This makes the sound more “gritty”.
It may sounds "wrong" in-car, cause you you need to change some settings. Your real in-car video has a sort-of in-helmet muffled sound. You can actually set this ingame in Sound, then "Ear Protection / Helmet Effect" and the microphone in-car also sound a bit "overwhelmed" by the sound. A lot of compression. You can also adjust that in Sound, right underneath the other one. Don't know if that latter one is replay only. Maybe. This might help.
Didn't they publicly say that the sound will get updated in the future, because they either had some problems, or they are updating their sound engine?
They all sound the same. Is crazy when you think how much money they have from renting all the tracks and cars in Iracing + subscriptions from everyone.
Awesome review James. Was hoping you'd do one! Try change the sound to XAudio2 instead of Default. It adds more depth to the sound. I recently changed and was blown away by all the extra bits and depths of the sound.
@@Seraver In the Sounds section of Options menu...look top left. Change the sound device out from Default to XAudio2. You will see a Default and XAudio2 for each of your sounds devices (speakers/headphones etc). Warning..its quite loud at first...you will need to adjust compared to the default where everything was basically full
you hear top much mid and top end in the engine don't hear enough of the lower grunt and road sounds. It's like i racing took the mid equalizer and cranked it. could just be me
I find the sounds in iRacing to be anemic. When you hear these cars in person, or at least on the TV, they sound powerful. It's not just iRacing though, many 'car games' struggle to get engine sounds right. It must be really hard to convert something so visceral into a digital sound and keep the authenticity. I think this car in particular could have been a bit louder... a bit more bark to it.
As a sound designer, I think the onboard sound in iRacing sounding "off" comes down to the mixing. iRacing has always sounded a bit tinny and sterile to me, but I feel like the source material itself is quite accurate. Nailing the sounds in a racing sim is kind of a dark art, at the end of the day it comes down to preference and what "feels" right. Compared to iRacing, ACC's onboard sounds have more presence in the mid-to-low frequencies and seem to even have a bit of distortion added, making it sound more aggressive and weightier.
If you are using the chip-set that is onboard your mother board you might get a "massive" boast in quality and aggressiveness from sounds in the game by getting a dedicated sound card. I just had this experience with the sound being "watered out" after my new PC build but by installing a dedicated PCIe Sound card it was like having a whole NEW game!
@@Jaaames It's true, most of the complainers of the sound in iRacing haven't got the systems or headroom to reproduce the fidelity we offer in XAudio. The ASUS PCI-E soundcards are really nice quality for the audiophile. A good surround speaker system with a sub and a buttkicker is an absolute treat. Thanks for your honest opinions. There is an update to the onboard to give it a little more girth without compromising the recording we captured with the Pfaff team.
@@greghill6117 I have to call you out on this. If the problem is the user's hardware, why does RaceRoom sound SO incredible compared to iRacing on the same hardware? Ditto for a few of the other sims. Is it because iRacing is only a actually TRYING with XAudio and is just phoning it in on DirectSound?
@@greghill6117 this honestly feels like same ole dev attitude going back to when it was Papyrus. If anyone says the tire model or sound or anything else is inferior, blame the user's hardware, claim they aren't skilled enough to drive the car, etc. I don't accept this by other developers and iRacing doesn't get a pass either.
@@greghill6117 This sounds a bit odd, a lot of us use decent, expensive USB headphones and the audio still sub par compared to the competition, I loaded up AMS2 yesterday and iRacing just sounds so flat in comparison, not sure what's going on but decent audio is crucial and iRacing audio is the weakest of all in the eyes of many people. Would be great to see some big improvements with regards to sound.
The real footage you played is a camera that’s not inside a helmet. Are you remembering the sound from inside a helmet when you drove or the camera footage you watched later? I assumed iRacing created the in car sound as it would sound inside a helmet which would be muted, and as you say, smoother. Just a thought.
It’s a good thought, my camera was inside a helmet tho. It still sounds considerably different even if you factor in the fact it may or may not have been inside a helmet.
The thing with the sound is James, iRacing's audio engine isn't particularly modern and honestly is one of iRacing's weakest parts when it comes to immersion. It lacks aggression and rawness in my opinion.
I really love hearing a drivers opinion on simulated cars. I do hope you can give the Mclaren Evo a try with the new Automobilista 2 1.6 update. The physics have completely changed in the beta compared to the main game.
@@antonlammers1454 It's really nice to drive now. They've taken care of the general slideyness, it's planted but it still feels more alive than a lot of other sims. There's a substantial FFB upgrade as well. They've also made a lot of improvements to the AI and updated the shaders and UI. It's like a different sim at this point.
One thing sims don't capture is the violence , bumps and shakes - in real life, sometimes you can be shaken around it is literally hard to see. Maybe this can be tweaked with setup.
As a long time iRacing user, onboard audio has been terrible forever. I honestly think if iRacing released now, in its current state, a lot of people would take a look and realise that compared to other Sims: - Audio is rubbish - Graphics are dated - 60hz ffb is terrible - Tyre model is objectively broken - Driving feels numb across a huge amount of cars - Netcode and car collision physics are plain bad - Many other issues exist, such as race start procedures that haven't been looked at for years. People would then weigh up the above against the pricing model and say not a chance. iRacing are in the position they are because of the multiplayer infrastructure they created years ago, it has little to do with the actual driving feel which is very dull across a lot of cars.
Yeah it's weird. That onboard noise has the absolute base note to it correct, but then all of the guttural noises aren't there. And the turbo whines and whistles are over-pronounced too. I really do wish iRacing got onboard noise better especially with gearbox noise like a lot of people are saying here.
thanks for an honest and great video! crazy to think that the tire model, one of the most important parts of a sim racing game, in iracing is so flawed, and has been for so long.
The problem is not that it is not being worked on, the problem is in the approach. They treat it like an ever expanding PhD research model. It is the iracing way though. They just nerd out on everything they touch. It is very cool in a way and there need to be people doing that, but it has its downsides.
@@TheLoucM Yep, given that the original AC has a more realistic model, for just one example, the problem has got to be in iRacing's approach. Overall, this issue with David Kaemmer's sims goes all the way back to the 1990s, actually. That was back when Papyrus (which became iRacing) were still using the old-fashioned 'brush model', long before they decided to reinvent the whole thing - for no apparent gain that I could ever find.
But the Iracing fanboys still defend it. They say there`s nothing wrong with it. They come at you with the numbers of players and Pro drivers that are using Iracing etc...😄
I thought it was me that was wrong. I moved to pc a couple months ago and iRacing tyres feel like they got grip that just dissapears completely in certain scenarios
When cars in iracing weave in front of you on the outlap, it always looks wrong how they steer. It looks like they steer from the middle of the car instead with the front tyres. Take a look at that. I think they have a tyre and a center of gravity or roll center issue in their physics, that would also explain why you can't save spins.
audio is flat, like most of iracing. it's not as harmonic as the cars really sound. IRL and in other games you get all the individual tones come through more clearly. in iracing, it's like it's all flattened out and mixed together like coming from a cheap 1 speaker setup or recorded on a lousy mic. oddly, when I was using a setup with transducers, it seemingly helped bring the cars alive, at least a bit mor, as they work off of audio. thanks for the review
so tyre model is still a big problem, shame is the last 2021 update before overhauling them actually felt really good for a change, then they became balloons again.
I think the biggest problem with iRacing still lies with the tire model, you slide a tire once and you have zero grip for at least half a lap depending on the track. It's frustrating.
yea as much as I enjoy iracing it's a bit like.. I don't even know how to say it high hp cars feel like monsters almost while iRacing is a bit like a cute plush teddy
I've always loved the Macca. I'm more AMS2 than ACC these days (but I'll never leave her completely 😊) I'm thinking LMU might be worth a go when all the DLC is released. Hopefully by then it will be out of early access.
Agree to your honest review. In terms of tyre physics, race feeling and sound ACC, rfactor 2, LMU and Raceroom are better. Sorry to say that, wish it is not so, but your irl comparison and your opinion shows. Thank you for your effort
@@gu3steezy like they are trying to improve their tire model 5 years or more ago? (no flatspots or punctures) or how they sell the new LMHd without a proper battery system compared to LMU or how they still use 60hz FFB (and only like 360Hz on some brands) while ACC had 400Hz since 2 or 3 years ago.

I feel slip in iRacing vs Real life is much not so forgiving. I just feel like in iRacing it is just wayy too easy to spin out. Both in rain and dry conditions.
People, listen me carefully. While it rain and if free active practice is run more than 15-20 min, than there is no grip line, it washed out. All this wet low grip line in simulators is full sh*t. I talked you as an experienced rain multiple podium competitor 😉. This is impossible to have so much rubbered dry line in real life in car racing. This is very rare situations. At all, yor line in wet conditions is always changed, because of your tires grip and grip on track is always changes. Sometimes you even faster in some corners if you're going through splashes 😬
A lot of GT3 GT World racer who also tested ACC said that they brake the same. So it must be truth to it. I think a few years back they did virtual races that gives them real championship points.
Comparing how much camera shake there is in your real onboard footage to what you see in iRacing doesn’t make sense because your brain compensates for some of that and smooths it out to a certain degree. What you see is a little less shaky than what the camera sees. It is certainly possible that iRacing is still too smooth in that regard. Just pointing out that what you see in the real car is a bit different than what your helmet cam sees.
It's because iRacing lacks reverb... They want to implement authentic dynamic reverb rather than just a static effect on top of the existing audio. It is coming.
I found the comparison of rain grip level useless.. It super clear that the level of rain is way higher in the sim. There were also way less puddles IRL. Other than that, nice insights.
Iracing and other sims feel.dampenend because we usualy turn of all camera shake and head movement because we cant feel the car with our butt in sims we need better references for our eyes.
Just a short note on the car: iRacing is scanning and processing the cars of the IMSA GTD/GTPRO, this can have an effect on sound and performance. Still James opinion is valid and needs to be heard.
I find ACC does to make the cars feel more "Alive" is the shaking of the camera gives that affect. but i find it quite annoying in VR when its like that
The shaking is way more realistic tho. You got to remember they are doing almost 2gs of cornering, massive downforce with bumps all over the track. They get vibrated like hell in those things.
@@SuperSilvi1990 not really. Idk if you’ve been in a race car but I have with solid engine mounts causing the cockpit to shake violently, your eyes act like a gyro helping reduce those affects very drastically, so what you see in ACC you wouldn’t in real life, the is also why I mentioned VR aspect as maybe on monitor it’s fine to drive ACC like that but in Vr it’s awful cause it’s artificial screen Shake effect
@Off_The_Rail I have been in an actual race car for a ride alongs, and solid motor mounts are not the same as a fully stripped and fully solid mounted race car. Race seats are almost directly mounted in the car, and they have very thin cushions. Most of the suspensions use hind joints instead of bushings, and they vibrate. It's one of the reasons I respect racing drivers a lot. Sometimes, they can not see.... they just send it.
Thanks always enjoy hearing a real drivers honest opinion

Tires do not go from 100 to 0 instantly from a little wheel spin, the tire slip physics are maybe the worst of any racing sim or game, cars are inherently stable, iRacing you can spin out at 10 MPH lol
The cars also seem far more on rails than other sims, and the issue with this to me is that once the cars are unstable (wheel spin, lock ups, oversteer, understeer), the cars have an entirely different set of physics that make them unpredictable and too random to catch often times.
Racecars are meant to be driven on the limit, and they feel good on the limit. iRacing feels unpredictable and bad on the limit.
By far the worst thing about iRacing though is the fanboys on the forums and in discussions that can't accept any criticism.
Great honest reveiw mate ,made really well with the rea onboards and stuff ,cheers
Glad you enjoyed😎
Im looking fwd to the LMGT3 Mclaren in LMU
Will be better no doubt because of LMGT3 spec. With iRacing we are stuck with IMSA.
Yeah I’m very intrigued to see what the LMU GT3’s will be like
It's a great video, and I appreciate the transparency.
Its Amazing you get to have this type of comparison. Cheers to you mate!

Have you done something similar with ACC? Cheers for the video.
I haven’t no, I only did this one as it was new content in the recent iRacing update

Gotta agree. I do love how alive the tyre feels in LMU and the braking at least in the gte makes alot of sense. Looking forward to comparing acc and LMU gt3s.
Same!

Wow, small world!
I might be doing something cool with RSS in the near future👀
@@Jaaames Nice! Their attention to detail is amazing. I have all their mods. Although I did spend a good hour trying to find a mystery rattle in my headset only to realise they had modelled the gear stick shake on the 1970 F1 car. I should have read the manual. 🤣🤣🤣

Your graphic settings look very nice, what kind of magic settings or hardware do you have ?

Its always very interesting seeing this perspective. Gotta give it to these companies making the sim racing games. They may not be absolutely perfect but it does give it a close feeling!
As sim racers in 2024, we are pretty spoilt!
Both yours and broadbents/steves cars being added in the same patch is pretty insane
Yeah what are the odds😅
It may sounds "wrong" in-car, cause you you need to change some settings. Your real in-car video has a sort-of in-helmet muffled sound. You can actually set this ingame in Sound, then "Ear Protection / Helmet Effect" and the microphone in-car also sound a bit "overwhelmed" by the sound. A lot of compression. You can also adjust that in Sound, right underneath the other one. Don't know if that latter one is replay only. Maybe. This might help.
Didn't they publicly say that the sound will get updated in the future, because they either had some problems, or they are updating their sound engine?
they said that they weee gonna upgrade the sound engine in the future
I can also tomorrow is gonna rain? Maybe not…

They all sound the same. Is crazy when you think how much money they have from renting all the tracks and cars in Iracing + subscriptions from everyone.
Nailed it
Yeah was thinking that, they do all sound the same
Awesome review James. Was hoping you'd do one! Try change the sound to XAudio2 instead of Default. It adds more depth to the sound. I recently changed and was blown away by all the extra bits and depths of the sound.

A bit more bark would have been good, indeed.
Hmmm never heard that before, interesting.
I feel like the one game that really gave that violent sound was Driveclub
Let's see if LMU brings some relevant GT3s...
🤞
Yeah sound shiud be improved on iR alot! They should leave option to choose exterior sound when you are inside car, why not!!;)
The real footage you played is a camera that’s not inside a helmet.
First time I took it out I thought the same thing, wanted the ACC soundtrack lol
The thing with the sound is James, iRacing's audio engine isn't particularly modern and honestly is one of iRacing's weakest parts when it comes to immersion. It lacks aggression and rawness in my opinion.
What Overlay is James using?
I really love hearing a drivers opinion on simulated cars. I do hope you can give the Mclaren Evo a try with the new Automobilista 2 1.6 update. The physics have completely changed in the beta compared to the main game.
So you tried the 1.6 in AMS2 ?
Wish I could get on that beta. I am itching to feel 1.6
@@HDRGamingHub Yes. I'm a paddock club member so I have access to beta builds. I've been testing it for months.
Interested to give this a go
One thing sims don't capture is the violence , bumps and shakes - in real life, sometimes you can be shaken around it is literally hard to see. Maybe this can be tweaked with setup.
So with TC 1 & 2, are these just 2 preset set points or 2 different ways TC is getting applied ?
As a long time iRacing user, onboard audio has been terrible forever.
I honestly think if iRacing released now, in its current state, a lot of people would take a look and realise that compared to other Sims:
- Audio is rubbish
- Graphics are dated
- 60hz ffb is terrible
- Tyre model is objectively broken
- Driving feels numb across a huge amount of cars
- Netcode and car collision physics are plain bad
- Many other issues exist, such as race start procedures that haven't been looked at for years.
People would then weigh up the above against the pricing model and say not a chance.
iRacing are in the position they are because of the multiplayer infrastructure they created years ago, it has little to do with the actual driving feel which is very dull across a lot of cars.
Couldn’t have said it better
Agreed. They have a malicious business model. They fix you up with content you just rent and a monthly/yearly fee. 😅
Well said
So very true
the sound is somewhat similar but i think they need to lower the gearbox sound a little bit and make the incar downshifts a bit louder
Would love to see you do a video in VR doing iRacing. Hopefully you can get your hands on a Bigscreen Beyond VR headset, and do both at the same time!

Yeah it's weird. That onboard noise has the absolute base note to it correct, but then all of the guttural noises aren't there. And the turbo whines and whistles are over-pronounced too. I really do wish iRacing got onboard noise better especially with gearbox noise like a lot of people are saying here.
They won't get anything better if people keep paying for iRacing despite its numerous flaws.
Sound is similar but its a bit weak and clean vs the onboard you showed, kinda like they took the sound which the engine on a dyno

thanks for an honest and great video! crazy to think that the tire model, one of the most important parts of a sim racing game, in iracing is so flawed, and has been for so long.
The problem is not that it is not being worked on, the problem is in the approach. They treat it like an ever expanding PhD research model. It is the iracing way though. They just nerd out on everything they touch. It is very cool in a way and there need to be people doing that, but it has its downsides.
@@TheLoucM
Yep, given that the original AC has a more realistic model, for just one example, the problem has got to be in iRacing's approach.
🫡
Your IRL onboard sounds like the McLaren GT3 from ACC
When cars in iracing weave in front of you on the outlap, it always looks wrong how they steer. It looks like they steer from the middle of the car instead with the front tyres. Take a look at that.
I think they have a tyre and a center of gravity or roll center issue in their physics, that would also explain why you can't save spins.
Never noticed that before but I do see what you mean, now I can’t unsee it😂
audio is flat, like most of iracing. it's not as harmonic as the cars really sound.
Welcome!
so tyre model is still a big problem, shame is the last 2021 update before overhauling them actually felt really good for a change, then they became balloons again.
I think the biggest problem with iRacing still lies with the tire model, you slide a tire once and you have zero grip for at least half a lap depending on the track. It's frustrating.
Not like that anymore
looks like ACC and RF2 got a better real sound
do you try to helmet sound onboard?
the only sim that feels alive with high FFB is RF2 , no doubt about it
yea as much as I enjoy iracing it's a bit like.. I don't even know how to say it
high hp cars feel like monsters almost while iRacing is a bit like a cute plush teddy
😂
Do you feel the car feels more real on iracing vs acc?
ACC
I've always loved the Macca. I'm more AMS2 than ACC these days (but I'll never leave her completely 😊) I'm thinking LMU might be worth a go when all the DLC is released. Hopefully by then it will be out of early access.
Agree to your honest review. In terms of tyre physics, race feeling and sound ACC, rfactor 2, LMU and Raceroom are better. Sorry to say that, wish it is not so, but your irl comparison and your opinion shows. Thank you for your effort
No sorry, iR is pretty bad, not only in terms of tires. What you said is true
I think this is becoming a more and more popular opinion. The only real thing iRacing has for them now is their multiplayer base.

I think you'd best stick to ACC if you want as close to the real GT3 EVO experience. The car just seems super dull in iRacing.
Yeah I agree
if we were to combine the good elements form both iracing and acc i think we would get an insane game
I just bought the C100 Mk2 ;-)
So what is still wrong with tire model?
Can you compare this to the other sims as well
I feel slip in iRacing vs Real life is much not so forgiving.
I wonder if you added a muffled sound to imitate having a helmet on if it would sound more realistic.
Bro with one hand is quicker then me with two hands and driving assists enabled
😂
@Jaaames am I really that funny
It does sound more guttural in real life.. but let's be honest, I'm not gonna drive in IRL and iRacing has the best overall package ;)
Fair point, overall as a sim it might be the strongest, when you take everything into account.
So do you or do you not smash brakes to 100% in a real life gt3? Some real life drivers say they do
A lot of GT3 GT World racer who also tested ACC said that they brake the same. So it must be truth to it. I think a few years back they did virtual races that gives them real championship points.
I think I’ll make a video on this soon
Your feedback is so welcomed especially from the sim community🤘🏻🏁
Awesome feedback!

Was always going to be tricky to make it completely fair as there are so many variables, thank you though! Glad you enjoyed.
Game sound doesn't have as much wind sound and its not as throaty/raw.
Iracing and other sims feel.dampenend because we usualy turn of all camera shake and head movement because we cant feel the car with our butt in sims we need better references for our eyes.
Good point, I always turn off camera shake & head movement to make it easier to see things & be consistent with my vision
iRacing patched the in-car sound issues today.
McLaren 720S GT3 EVO
Improved in-car engine sounds and added new transmission and drivetrain sounds.
Just a short note on the car: iRacing is scanning and processing the cars of the IMSA GTD/GTPRO, this can have an effect on sound and performance.
Still James opinion is valid and needs to be heard.
Good point☝️
@@SuperSilvi1990 btw I’m not saying the car shaking isn’t realistic it is, it’s more just your eyes have a way of reducing that while in the car
I always turn off camera shaking even though it adds immersion because it’s annoying as fuck and surely makes you slower
