My great grandmother told me when she was living in Europe, a man threw a boy into the pig pen for stealing his apples and they ate him. I thought it was a load of B.S but now I believe it.

We had a sow named rosebud, sweetest pig ever until she had babies. Even dad wouldn’t get into her pen until she weaned them

Thanks for sharing your information 😊we have started a small homestead in Slovenia and have two pigs.
Usually it’s me who gives them food and I am 110lb and each pig is about 300lb.
I have to go into their pen and I really have to be careful now.
Love the pigs though 🐷💜and we also have 16 hens and one rooster.
You have a great homestead 🫶🏻🍀

Oh also my grandfather grew up on a pig farm when they wanted to get the pigs to pull up a stump they would pound a bunch of ears of corn underthe stump and the pigs will dig under there to get them out

It's true! Our older pigs are a month away from butcher and they scare the crap put of me in the mornings when I go to feed them, we have a big milk cow and Angus steer I'm in with multiple times a day and they have nothing on the pigs!

Nope if your pigs are jumping its not enough food filling them I get my pigs to 300lbs easy biggest pig in the plant I had the leanest pig in there and when my pigs eat they leave a little food at the bottom, and they sleep. My rule is 4 pigs per pen they will eat. I sold my 8 of them and I made sure my butcher was paid and the rest went to my kids 4 wheeler to help it go by faster and easier. IF YOU FEED YOUR PIGS HEAVY they are better than dogs i have never had a pig escape ever. Happy pigs means easier life. They get bored. Feed heavy on a schedule. I walked out free food and profit still gave away Christmas ham out ever year

OUCH, that mouth injury! You ARE lucky that blow didn't fell you! You're absolutely correct about the inherent danger of raising large stock, and pigs in particular. Pigs of every species are notoriously savage beasts. They're not necessarily mean, but they can be extremely aggressive under the right (or wrong?) circumstances. I wish you every success, neighbor (I'm in NH, too, in the Portsmouth area). Continue well, and peace be with you. 💚

We just got a couple of Meishans!
I know they are one of those breeds that take 12-18 months & have lots of lard, but I chose them for their mellow, sleepy personalities & we use tons of lard for cooking & baking & sausage making.
They are our 1st piggies & they are our favorite animals on the homestead so far!

Good video. I'm all about taming them too. its easy because I only have a couple. But the other thing is I have oxford sandy and black pigs that are super tame. A deliberate choice on my part. Get docile pigs for your first time round.

I had to retag one a week before finishing, last batch. 115kg/250lb. My Tamworth friend told me not to even consider it. I'd bet bit. It was my first time so I asked my breeder. He said, distract with food and go for it. Barely a squeal and it was done.@@TheMindfulHomestead

I raise pigs just to get ahead in financial inflation but I will suggest you base on if all your life. When I load my pigs they love the sound of doritos lol I let them out man they love electric fence lol but a dozen donuts and doritos they load themselves it funny stuff. So suggestions don't feed your pigs at night before butcher you put the fav meal in the trailer they want the food pigs are easier than cows.

Most folks today don't understand the opening of The Wizard of Oz.
Dorothy falling into the pig paddock was a big deal.
Also, My wife and I are Real Estate agents in NH and we showed a home in the Greenville/New Ipswich area. When we pulled up to the home you would have sworn a turf company had done a botched job of rolling up the entire 1/2 acre lawn. My wife and our clients could not understand what had happened .I looked down and saw the pig foot prints and remembered seeing the neighbor's 2 pigs in their pen next to the shared driveway up to the house. It didn't take a genius to figure out what had happened. It was unbelievable to see how much lawn the pigs literally rolled up with their snouts looking for grubs and stuff!

the hogs they had back then were very different than the hogs today. The hogs in this vid are certainly under 225 . 300 is huge . They butchered there hogs back then at 300 . The hogs on wizard of Oz were packed in the pen like sardines and were over 350 . Yes that would be dangerous

    • @TheMindfulHomestead
      @TheMindfulHomestead  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

Thanks for subscribing! We don’t have any horses. Hay for horses would cost a ton with our limited pasture capacity. Not to mention the labor that their care would add to our plate. For our situation, they aren’t the best fit, and having a tractor that’s always ready and doesn’t get tired makes more sense.

Pigs are interesting, for sure. Ours will mouth you. They will lightly bite you, and if you pull back, they will startel a little like oh okay this food is moving. If you dont move and let them have bite number 2 you are bleeding. Lol, it is completely fair because we haven't had a pig we haven't eventually chewed.
