Penn State fan here : SMU has a good coach and donors with deep pockets, so you’re in a good situation. Furthermore, you’re in the ACC, which is one of the weaker Power 4 conferences, which will help your team tremendously with an easier pathway to the CFP. All things considered, this was your first year away from the Group of 5 teams so I think even getting to the CFP is a massive success. I have a feeling we will be seeing you in the CFP for years to come and wish your team the best of success (just not against Penn State).
Penn State fan here. Very fair analysis of the game. The 2nd interception was the Virginia high school player of the year as a senior .. as a running back! Just in case you were wondering where that awareness came from on the return. As SMU program matures hopefully their strength comes from recruiting and not so much from the portal.
It had to of been a really cool experience for SMU. I'm a Rutgers fan and that game looked like a typical Rutgers team playing Penn State. SMU is recruiting just behind Rutgers, so that makes sense. I'll be rooting for SMU to level up.
PSU FAN here that was a the game. One big difference i saw was the size of SMUs Linebackers, Corners and safeties . I was at 10/13 games this year. that might have been he smallest back 7 I've seen this year.
Yeah, I've seen quite a few SMU people comment on 21 points off turnovers, as though Penn State didn't then have to drive 80 yards after the 3rd INT. Plus, Penn State ran for almost 200 yards, and their last TD drive was 9 rushes for 75 yards against SMU's supposed great run defense.
Plus, PSU offense doesn’t take the field after those two defensive scores.. they kick off to SMU each time, so two less offense possession’s for Penn State. If you don’t count the pick 6’s you can’t assume Penn State wouldn’t have scored offensively on those two missed possessions.
@@donhartman4018gimme a break. PSU didn’t do much on offense. Ran almost 300 against Oregon. 44 was shut down. 21 points is a lot of gifts. 17-10 not a big deal
@brandotex 14 points were gifts. They still had to drive 80 yards after the 3rd pick. I'd call it 24-10 without the pick 6's at best. Plus SMU's TD was also a gift after the backup qb threw a pick late in the game.
I'm a big Penn State fan but SMU deserved to be there. Some SEC teams and coaches and bloggers are just a bunch of cry babies this year, If you want to make the playoffs don't lose 3 regular season games especially to 2 teams who were 6 and 6 and your in. People all year were saying PSU was overrated and didn't belong in the playoffs so I feel your pain if you know what I mean. You have a really good team who had a really bad day.
PSU fan here. Don't discount the weather. PA cold can be brutal. I can't imagine coming from Texas and having to play in those temperatures. Great game, great season, and hope you come back stronger next year to take down, Clemson.
Penn Stater here. I just think SMU was overmatched so you had to play a perfect game and that wasn't in the cards. I think the LT was set up for failure by being left on an island with Abdul Carter. There had to be a double team or chip block to help him. That's like PSU trying to play an all-game Cover 4 against Jeanty. It's unfair to the Dline. Also, I think people are reading way too much into PSU's offensive stats. If the defense is not giving the offense a chance to go on long drives and put up points, well, there's no opportunity for the offense to go on long drives to put up points. PSU has multiple ways to win a game. We're not going to force-feed Tyler Warren the ball in 15-degree weather with 20 MPH winds for style points if we can make him a run blocker and win on the ground. Why keep talking about the passing stats when the rushing stats tell the story?
SMU needs better O-Line and defensive front seven if they want to compete outside the ACC. Penn State had 189 yards rushing, and if the starters played the whole game it would have been 200+. Penn State's O-Line was opening up some huge holes. Penn State had 325 yards of offense with taking their starters out after the 3rd quarter. Not seeing how the SMU defense played well. Penn State didn't pass the ball because they didn't have to.
Definitely agree on the O line...PSU largely torched SMU's o line. Was a problem all year long. But SMU's D and D line clearly was good enough and wasn't out of place being in that game. Until the game got way out of hand after poor offensive mistakes, SMU's D line largely stifled Penn State. SMU's O put the D in really bad situations.
You guys really leaned on how you bottled up TW44 but failed to mention without adjusting for sacks that PSU ran 200+ on your top 5 DL. If theyre running that well then theres no need to throw the ball.
I get you are trying to be positive for you fan base but you just had your asses handed to you. You play all these hypothetical scenarios to feel better. Here is a Scenario, PSU doesn't put their 2nd string defense in and you don't score the one touch down that makes you feel comfortable that you weren't completely blown out. Here is another we don't put our 2nd string offense in and we score again which makes the game 45 to 3. Those are 2 realistic scenarios vs the ones you put forward to try to ignore that you got out played because we were just a better team. I still respect you as a team and hope you continue to grow but don't sugar coat a shit sandwich
Lol, these SMU pod cast are annoying. I like listening to other teams' opinions. But They keep playing the if game. Penn State averaged 5 yards per play. SMU like 3.2. Penn State had 2 running backs who averaged 6.4 per carry. Their running back was at like 3.1, maybe. 3rd down. Penn State was around 48% SMU 13%. Turnovers SMU had 3 picks. All were because of pressure of good play on PSU part. It's not like Jennings had a clean pocket and simply threw a int. And as you mentioned. 20% of the game was played by backups. So the stats were even worse when it was Psu starters vs. their starters. Just admit you got your ass handed to you.
@@markklein3408How did you spot us 21? Your Oline clearly couldn’t block our Dline which just exposed Jennings for what he is. Forced turnovers. And the last interception we had the ball on our side of the field. Couldn’t stop it
