Our team danced with Beltane in Ilfracombe,very recently.I can tell you,they are one of the best "Border" teams in the whole Country.Very hypnotic sound with the drums,and violins.....plus a guitar in there!!!

Morris dancing was invented in the 1400s. It was created under the influence of visiting Spanish dancers, doing popular dances from Spain, and turned into something new. Nothing pagan about it. Morris was actually....Moorish. Hence the blackface.
Wonderful performance! In Portugal we have a very similar dance: "Pauliteiros de Miranda", from the far North East Trás-os-Montes. I was amazed to see it has the same type of movements and rythm. It is usually played just with bagpipes and drums. I was told it has pre-Roman origins. Interesting to verify we share a common background.

I'd never seen border morris until yesterday. This stirs the blood, as Beltane should. I'm in love! I would dearly love to know how you make your costumes.

That being said it's quite possible that people fused it with local folk dances which could very well have pagan roots. While the facial makeup is undeniably blackface it didn't stem from the same racist tradition as later performances which were explicitly meant to mock people of colour
