i’m pretty sure he lost that “hollow” mentality quickly because before, he thought there was no way he and his wife could live happily together, so he was putting up an act so he could cope with that grief. now that sagiri has given him a way with the pardon, he’s found new hope to be reunited with his love again
I think it makes more sense that his master mentally conditioned him to never turn try and escape or something, because obviously he had options other than the pardon since hes like the strongest ninja ever who can literally do magic and it seems the govt has absolutely no way to deal with that.
