🇯🇵Learn Japanese with me, join now www.chanijapan.com 🇯🇵 Do you have insulation in your house? Do you notice the difference? What are your tips for keeping cool in Summer?
Insulation is the best thing you can do for house, it will save you a lot of money in heating and cooling. And I would not worry about earthquakes as long as you don’t have to associate with bogans, you are way safer than most of us.😂😂
One little trick that might help you saving water while cleaning your dishes is to have 2 spray bottles, one with a little bit of dish soap and one without. As soon as you finish eating (before things dry on your dishes) spay your dishes with your soaped water (let it soak a bit if needed) and rinse with the clear water. You can air dry after. This is used a lot by van dweller.
In addition to the bathtub, we also filled up our washing machine for extra water for flushing. I'm in rural US and our electric goes out a lot which means no water pump. Be prepared not scared!
Chani, you should put some stuff in the oshiire and even in your garage as well as under the floor. With earthquakes, the house can be undamaged but off kilter and doors and trapdoors become hard or even impossible to open. With the fusuma doors you can pull the bottom out and pull off the whole door even if things are wonky. (during the Kobe earthquake I couldn't access the rooms with normal doors and in the kitchen the refrigerator fell over and blocked the underfloor storage.)
The problem is Devil runs the world. He is lier and murderer. This is the reason why liers and murderers feel good while righteous persons are persecuted. This is the reason why Hitler got the power, but Christ was executed as "blasphemer" and "rioter" by denunciation of clergy. That's why we've got the Gospel about the God's kingdom. Jehovah would put everything in order. The dead will be resurected and we'll meet our loved ones again! :-)
I live in northern California. I keep emergency supplies and a getaway bag due to the danger of wildfires in my area. I hope you stay safe and never have to go through a major disaster.
@@lnrbry I’m in Calaveras County bordering on Amador County. We have had multiple small fires which thankfully were brought under control rather quickly. I feel badly for those people affected by the Park fire. Very devastating.
I love how thorough you are about everything. You'll notice the difference the insulation makes in winter as well. Well done. Re flushing the toilet in the aftermath of a quake, I recently read that to minimize odor, people can also use kitty litter for their small business should the toilet be damaged and unable to flush. So a little extra of that is handy for that, too.
There are also "paper" towels, made of bamboo fibers, that can be rinsed out and washed (if one has water...) and reused for "bathroom business", just as we used to use cloth diapers for babies. What's the difference, really? Disasters are no time to be squeamish.
@@allie1953I purchased some toilet liners at Daiso. The Japanese have created a toilet liner that you add a packet of mix after using the restroom. It hardens the liquid/mess and then you can remove and dispose it.
So adorable how Millie follows you around everywhere and is always watching what you do. So adorable! Hope all is well and that you won't get any more earthquake scares soon. I heard that after the big warning last Friday the largest threat was for the next 7 days, so I am hoping the threat level is lower now. Thankfully you're very well-prepared!
Chani, I live in earthquake and fire zone in Southern California. We actually had just a 4.7 magnitude earthquake. What I could recommend that try keep your home “clean” from too many small items outside. I keep everything in drawers or in cabinets. No niches etc.. I have earthquakes safety hinges in all my kitchen cabinets. Very important if you have animals! Because shattered glass can cut the pet arteries and bleed out till you get home. I have dry emergency 30 days food ( same as astronauts) 11:03 supplies that can be made fresh with camping cooking set. I have an earthquake backpack close to my door with all necessary supply such as emergency tent, blanket clothes grooming stuff copy of my ID First Aid box and some cash. Always keep enough gas in your car! Dont forget have enough water supply!Ps: I also have a small emergency packet in my car and garage total of😊 in 3 different places..
Dear Chani, your videos always make my day! It's amazing what a difference the insulation makes. You will also profit from it in the winter an your utility bills should go down! Hi Chani! Your video definitely gives perspective about the reality of natural disasters in Japan. I am a devotee of Yuzuru Hanyu and have travelled several times to Sendai as a pilgrimage. I am always reminded of the terrible events of 2011. Stay safe, thank you for your wonderful videos and I hope to meet you in the near future in Japan!
We insulated and upgraded the venting of our attic from R20 to R50 a couple of years ago. It wound up knocking down about 20% of my heating and a third of my cooling. Still won’t pay for itself for another decade, but the comfort improvement is tangible.
As someone in northern California, We have our to go stuff all ready in case of fire.. It is a fearful thing to have to have all of this stuff just ready to go, but something that is going to be useful if it ever happens. Mother Nature is always lurking, and will strike whether we are ready or not. We are trying to mitigate our losses if the worst can happen. Anyways, we are visiting Tokyo and Osaka next month, Just a whirlwind visit really for tourist stuff, but have been fascinated by your Akiya purchase. Thank you for sharing the process, and I want to say that, you are doing these videos perfectly. I think most of your viewers are not looking for an Instagram or tiktok influencer, we just want the experience of what the process is and how someone can navigate it. And I am lifting a frosty pint in your direction because you are smashing it!
Hi Chani I recently found your channel and have really enjoyed watching your, dare I say, adventures in Japan. The threat of a major earthquake in Japan has been predicted for some time, but as you state quite rightly all you can do is be prepared and hope for the best. As I live in Victoria’s bush fire area in the north east, we have the same mentality. I love your beautiful cat Miss Millie.
Here in Southern California, there’s been a few rock and roll quakes as well. They say to store supplies in a new trash can outside the house under an awning so that you will have access to it if your house falls down.
Being a Kiwi and living in the Soith Island where we've had a few biggies, I am totally not prepared! It's so silly of me. I do have a small gas cooker because the power will sometimes go out with strong wind (always right on dinner time?) And sometimes due to snow, but apart from that, I have nothing in a specific space if I need to pack up and go urgently. I need to remedy this ASAP.
Its great that you are prepared - the only thing I would think to reconsider is your bag. The one you showed had thin handles/straps which will dig in to your shoulders and hands when you are carrying that load on the 40 minute walk to safety. If you get a backpack it will free up your hands to keep Millie safe.
Great idea to use the in ground storage in the kitchen 👍🏻 And documents in the cloud is definitely the safest place for them😊 I have a minimum of 1 case of 500ml bottles of water stashed in the apartment at all times

Great video, and always love seeing the day to day and house updates. A few things you may want to consider if you haven't already or it wasn't suggested already, (even for not so catastrophic events) is a tracker for Millie (Apple Tag or android tag - depending on your phone). Affix another in your emergency bag. And a few Life Straws that filter water (in your bag and in Mori). We are being warned in Canada about the "big one," on the west coast. Sadly, it's when, not if. On to happier things, the house looks beautiful, perfect size and such a peacefulness about it.
Great idea on the insulation, I'm sure it helps a lot! Also very smart on the disaster prep and location. You can never be too careful! I'm so excited for your incredible growth on here, I've been following since around 300 subscribers so it's amazing to see just how far you've gone in such a short amount of time! Keep up the great work Chani!
Hi Chani, thanks for another fun video. I have a house very much like yours in Kyoto. Just a PSA to all of us who have to stay prepared, a backpack (instead of a tote bag) is really recommended for the runner bag. Fingers crossed we don't ever have to use our runner bags! Another item is a whistle (cheap ones from Daiso) because it can be used to send Morse code messages: 3 short beeps, 3 long, 3 short = Help!
It is a good thing that your videos have prompted me to prepare a little for a disaster. I actually live in an area of NSW that is currently experiencing a number of earthquakes. About 4.7 in magnitude but still big considering we're not normally prepared for earthquakes.
An interesting aspect of the Nankai Trough earthquake in a document I read, is that many seismologists didn’t agree with the prediction model, but the Prefectural Governors liked the idea of an imminent earth quake so they could get government funding for their prefecture, purportedly for earthquake preparation.
You are so well organized and efficient. I’m so glad that you got the insulation to keep you cooler. Great preparation for any disaster which I hope never happens! Give Millie a pet for me. Looking forward to the next video. All the best! June
The insulation and prep for natural disasters have met Millie's specifications, I see! She is so adorable. PG you won't have to deal with a tsunami or major earthquake. However, having lived in California- before I moved- for nearly 38 years, we always had to be prepared too. ♥♥♥
Hey! You can also put your supplies in 2 or 3 bags. So in case of quick evacuation - you can quickly grab all your food just by pulling these bags out and drop it in a car, or carry it. In your bag must be also minimum food for 1-2 days. If you don't have special tablets for water purification - think about it.
Thanks so much for another interesting video! Cats and boxes. 😂 All over the world, they have to get in them! 🤣🤣 This reminds me to update my disaster box: we live in Illinois in the central US, where there can be very strong storms. Violent thunderstorms and tornadoes, which can cause: power cuts for days, flooding, blocked roads, vehicle and building damage and destruction… but like earthquakes, you can’t fully predict where or when. Oh yeah, we are also in an area that would be affected when the New Madrid fault has its next big quake. The last one was in the early 1800s, and when it happens, it will be catastrophic. Yeah, I do have to do that disaster supply refresh!
I hope you (and all of Japan) stays safe and this megaquake just doesn’t happen. I am coming to Japan next month for a race. I was last there long ago (1993) and am really looking forward to being there again.
Chain this is a great video. I loved to be prepared. I have an Emergency Bag also because of the Hurricanes here and Earthquakes, Tremors also. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. ❤
You are so organized! Great video. I live in Florida under the threat of hurricanes at this time of year and I need to stock up on water and food that doesn’t have to be cooked. I’m a procrastinator! I love that Millie supervised the insulation work and your emergency preparation!
It would also be useful for upcoming camping trips too for lights, fans and a portable induction hob if you don't want to carry cooking gas in the car.
Hi Chani-san I enjoy your videos so much. You are definitely evolving as a TH-camr and I look up to you. ☺And your level of Japanese speaking is amazing! Please stay safe.
I’m glad you said that. I was hoping someone would comment with knowledge to let me know what they thought. I really did t know what I was looking at even though it looked really strong.
Thank you for another great video Chani. Great to see that you are progressing in wonderful directions and hope that you will be safe always. Lots of hope prayers and good energy to Japan.
That’s for sharing this. My house in Japan was well insulated, but now I am in the US. It seems it is hit and miss if there is insolation. I still keep an emergency bag on hand: one per person in the house.
Love this video, thanks! I'm in Florida, so hurricanes, sink holes, and termites are my home nightmares, haha. Particularly sink holes, as, even when repaired, they will permanently ruin the value of your home because of their stigma, and they can open anywhere.
Dear Chani. Please upgrade to an electric bike and cat carrier accoutrement. Ease the burden of carrying everything and 4/4 side wheels. Extra slip slops too. Solar charging for phone. Do a reconnaissance ride for all of us so we know ypu know the way. Also headlamp and chargers, solar, for clear view and miners headlamp as hands free.
Hey Chani, another fascinating video! Can you do one on your emergency bag including the tips people gave you! Would be really great to see what you have.
Regarding other foreigners living in Japan, I always wonder how their Japanese language skills are. I was impressed and happy to hear your Japanese! Very nice! Your old house is much like our old house in Tokyo.
Good to be prepared. Here in Houston, Texas, portable generators are a big deal for us when power is knocked out because of hurricanes. We've already had one this season. Our power was out for 36 hours, but some people lost it for 5 days.
Great and informative video as always! May I suggest going along your tsunami evacuation route if you haven't already? It might help to familiarise yourself with landmarks in case you have to evacuate at night or in low visibility.
Insulation in houses is great keeping heat in during winter and out in summer and energy bills down so always worth it. Amazed by how clean and neat your loft space was. My UK house is about 100 years old and the tile roof allows dust in so it is always dirty. Our insulation tends not to have the plastic cover so you have to wear ppe to avoid getting fiberglass in your skin. Recommendation here is that any electrical wiring should be on top of the insulation to prevent any risk if wiring over heating under insulation (though that's unlikely if thexwiring is good). Your earthquake preparation was really thorough and interesting. In the UK we have few natural hazards unless in an area at risk of floods so we don't really prepare for that type of thing. Putting a your house deeds etc in the cloud is really sensible given the originals could get destroyed. Technology can be useful. Stay safe and let's all hope that when an earthquake finally arrives that you are not badly affected.
I so look forward to your videos - always filled with handy info, interesting places and... Millie! Thanks for sharing your lifestyle in such a relaxing way, leaving everyone wanting more. Have a happy weekend - I'm off to buy Mooncakes tomorrow.
I'm glad your attic is now insulated. The whole earthquake and tsunami warning would make me feel uneasy too. But from what I've seen today the government revoced the big earthquake warning. Personally I would keep an emergency bag at a safe space outside the house as well because you might not want to be inside the house for long after something happened. Also keeping a small emergency supply on each floor would make more sense to me.
I was in Musota Wakayama city in 1995 when the big Kansai earthquake hit … thought i was dead but as it was 5am i just rolled over and went back to sleep ….😂
I've been watching you for a while now and your videos are real informative. so thanks for that. I just bought a house in Saitama, 1000 SqFt. I need to redo my bathroom and was wondering if you can give some tips and some pricing ideas as I like how yours is done. I may have missed the video of you redoing the bathroom.
I paid for it to be installed by my handyman. All up it was around ¥800000 it is the TOTO brand. They had to replace all my water pipes because there was a leak somewhere.
@@ChaniJapan ahh I see ok thank you . I will be using Toto as well for my toilet. I was thinking of going with Lixil for the rest of the bath as they have "kits" that are the whole bath area.
I'm always watching your videos. You live right on the edge of where the Nankai Trough might hit or miss. From that location, it seems like you don't need to worry about tsunamis, so that's a relief. Japanese summers are extremely hot, so please take care of yourself.
just a quick suggestion, in your floor stash , keep a camping gas stove and extra fuel with it. Instant noodles are really bad when they're dry! best of luck.

Thanks for sharing!!i will get a whistle😃
It is a good thing that your videos have prompted me to prepare a little for a disaster. I actually live in an area of NSW that is currently experiencing a number of earthquakes. About 4.7 in magnitude but still big considering we're not normally prepared for earthquakes.
I am sure the insulation will make a huge difference. We just drove through Wakayama in the camper van. Beautiful area.
It’s such a lovely area with so much nature 🩷
This was a scary one Chani and I do hope that you both stay safe and well there. I can see that you and Millie are well prepared so that's reassuring!
An interesting aspect of the Nankai Trough earthquake in a document I read, is that many seismologists didn’t agree with the prediction model, but the Prefectural Governors liked the idea of an imminent earth quake so they could get government funding for their prefecture, purportedly for earthquake preparation.
I hope it never comes
This clip is so useful for foreigners who will face disaster in Japan.
You are so well organized and efficient. I’m so glad that you got the insulation to keep you cooler. Great preparation for any disaster which I hope never happens! Give Millie a pet for me. Looking forward to the next video. All the best! June
Hi June 👋
The insulation and prep for natural disasters have met Millie's specifications, I see! She is so adorable.
PG you won't have to deal with a tsunami or major earthquake. However, having lived in California- before I moved- for nearly 38 years, we always had to be prepared too. ♥♥♥
I like how you imported Australian tradies to do the roof work 😂
Smart move getting someone else to in stall your insulation batts, they are so scratchy, not a job I like doing.
Hey! You can also put your supplies in 2 or 3 bags. So in case of quick evacuation - you can quickly grab all your food just by pulling these bags out and drop it in a car, or carry it. In your bag must be also minimum food for 1-2 days. If you don't have special tablets for water purification - think about it.
Good ideas.
Thanks so much for another interesting video! Cats and boxes. 😂 All over the world, they have to get in them! 🤣🤣
This reminds me to update my disaster box: we live in Illinois in the central US, where there can be very strong storms.
Good to think about it and prepare just in case 👋
I love your videos! You are doing such a great job! Keep it up
Thank you so much!
I learned of these bathtub bags for storing water when I was living in the USA.
You are so organized! Great video. I live in Florida under the threat of hurricanes at this time of year and I need to stock up on water and food that doesn’t have to be cooked. I’m a procrastinator!
I love that Millie supervised the insulation work and your emergency preparation!
If you haven’t already-a solar powered battery charger is a good idea because power may not be available
It would also be useful for upcoming camping trips too for lights, fans and a portable induction hob if you don't want to carry cooking gas in the car.
Great idea. I’ve just ordered one on Amazon. I think it will be great for camping too.
Hi Chani-san I enjoy your videos so much. You are definitely evolving as a TH-camr and I look up to you. ☺And your level of Japanese speaking is amazing! Please stay safe.
Thank you so much!!
A compass is a good thing to have handy. You can even keep it as a keychain fob if it has a nice water-tight case.
Good call!
As a carpenter I find those roof beams sugoi 😂 I wouldnt worry about quakes breaking such sturdy design
I’m glad you said that. I was hoping someone would comment with knowledge to let me know what they thought. I really did t know what I was looking at even though it looked really strong.
I just love these vlogs. ❤
Take care Chani and Millie ❤
Thank you 👋
Thank you for another great video Chani. Great to see that you are progressing in wonderful directions and hope that you will be safe always.
Lots of hope prayers and good energy to Japan.
Thank you so much!
That’s for sharing this. My house in Japan was well insulated, but now I am in the US. It seems it is hit and miss if there is insolation.
I still keep an emergency bag on hand: one per person in the house.
I can't believe they still had a sign up about the 10% offer, even though it had finished. That's madness.
Great video, glad you are prepared and stay safe!
Thanks 😃
Good stuff. Though I'm not sure you need turn power off , that's a bit over kill.
Your japanese is very good chani.
Love this video, thanks! I'm in Florida, so hurricanes, sink holes, and termites are my home nightmares, haha. Particularly sink holes, as, even when repaired, they will permanently ruin the value of your home because of their stigma, and they can open anywhere.
I didn’t know about sink holes 😳
I was actually planning to do a trip to the evacuation area just to check the timing.
Stay safe and Good Luck!....
Wow, 3c difference! That's amazing!
It really is!
Hey Chani, another fascinating video! Can you do one on your emergency bag including the tips people gave you! Would be really great to see what you have.
I think it is all in this video and the tips are in the comments ♥️ th-cam.com/video/Mp1GICQ-5HI/w-d-xo.html
Regarding other foreigners living in Japan, I always wonder how their Japanese language skills are. I was impressed and happy to hear your Japanese! Very nice!
Your old house is much like our old house in Tokyo.
Thanks 👋
Good to be prepared. Here in Houston, Texas, portable generators are a big deal for us when power is knocked out because of hurricanes. We've already had one this season. Our power was out for 36 hours, but some people lost it for 5 days.
5 days is a long time
It doesn't hurt to prep. Good luck.
Great and informative video as always! May I suggest going along your tsunami evacuation route if you haven't already? It might help to familiarise yourself with landmarks in case you have to evacuate at night or in low visibility.
Great suggestion!
I love your cat
😽
Good ideas
Cuídense mucho ❤❤❤😊
I was in Musota Wakayama city in 1995 when the big Kansai earthquake hit … thought i was dead but as it was 5am i just rolled over and went back to sleep ….😂
Oh and we visit next month!! I’ve told hubby and son we should probably add some small emergency essentials to our backpacks just in case!
Great idea!!
重い品物の運び、上げ下げなどは 中腰ではなくからだ全体を使い
腰に負担を掛けないよう 注意して作業してください。応援してます👍
Thank you. I need to be careful lifting heavy things. 🩷
Incredibly hot here in summer. Especially at night time. That’s what really surprised me.
I love how you just slipped in that you finally built that Japanese course 😏. Insta signing up!
I live in Wajima if you know what that means in relation to mega quakes. Just make sure you have water and non-perishable food in your stocks.
just a quick suggestion, in your floor stash , keep a camping gas stove and extra fuel with it. Instant noodles are really bad when they're dry! best of luck.
Great idea!!
Hope you will be safe Chani! Here in Europe we are under hot weather as well. Take care ❣
Thank you! You too!
All the best from quakeville Mexico.
They still have rockwool in Japan!? Surely glass wool?
Yikes.
Loving your channel 🇦🇺
Thanks ♥️
Fascinating. Thank you 😊
