In the books you get it from his point of view and you can see that even in the first half he is still not a great guy, he felt like he owned lucy, when she sung about the boy from 12 that broke her heart he was really jealous that's why he didn't kiss her. I watched the movie before I read it though so I definitely agree the movie does feel more like we are rooting for him first half. If you get the chance I'd definitely recommend this book to you, above the others, being told from his pov I think you get a lot more out of it.

      Okay my last comment lol:
To answer one of the final questions you asked, lucy grey is a mystery, like the song they were singing in the lake when snow asked what happened to lucy grey. It's a real poem about a girl who most likely died in the snow, but we will never truly know if she's out there or not, seems likely that this lucy grey also died from snow, but they say you can still hear her song in the woods 😊
Lots of theories that her cousin maude ivory is katniss' paternal grandmother, she memorized every song she ever heard and katniss heard the hanging Tree sung by her father when she was a girl.

My opinion is snow thinks he loves lucy, but he doesnt respect her.
Also i see a lot of reactors come into this thinking "we will see what turned him bad" but really hes not all good in the beginning. I really think this is a atory of choice, throughout the movie he is given many chances to be good, and he does good, but his overwhelming need for power wins in the end.

I'm not sure how reliable a narrator Snow is in the book. He's certainly not a moral paragon, but many of the things he says over and over again seem to be things he's trying to convince himself of because he thinks they're what he _should_ think (eg, Sejanus can't be his friend, so obviously he's only interested in the money... except that I don't believe him, at least not then).

Unfortunately the only thing that the movie wasn’t able to communicate well was how much of a psychopath Snow was since the beginning. He never liked Sejanus and was only nice with him because of his money and position. He also never actually loved Lucy Grey and thought of her as his possession and as an extension of himself . When Sejanus dies, he cries for fearing of receiving the same punishment and not because his friend died.
Actually the games were really fast only lasting one or two days, but because of the explosion this edition was more entertaining and Snow realized that (those rocks in the middle of the arena are supposed to be the inspiration of the cornocupias we see on the more recents games). The Victor's Village , the winnings annually for the victors and the tour after the games were all creations of Snow to make the districts compete with each other and create more hatred between them.
Additionally a very funny part of the book is his hatred for the mockingjay, he thinks that they are a proof that the Capital can fail.

People Snow interacted with ALSO didn't have access to his inner thoughts, so we as the audience get a feel for how alluring and manipulative he can be because we ALSO catch ourselves wanting to sympathize with him. this whole movie is so fascinating to me, mostly for two reasons.
One- despite being surrounded by so many good people- Tigris, Lucy, Sejanus,- having to step into the arena himself, seeing up close how corrupt the capital is, see how unfair their system is, seeing how poorly people in the lower districts live, seeing friends of his die, despite all of this, he still funds and supports the games. The capital was against him the whole time and he leaned into it. He became an animal, just like how Dr. Gaul sees humanity, and doesn't understand that they're wrong, that's He's the odd man out and not the people he knew.
Two- after seeing this movie, it's impossible not to watch the other movies and see how paranoid Snow is about every little thing. And it makes it So. Funny. He thinks Katniss is playing 5D chess with him- singing The Hanging Man song (That Lucy wrote, love that detail) the Mocking Jays, they make a scene of their Reaping, etc- when Katniss has pretty much no idea what is going on with this weird old guy.

Snow's dad (Crassus) didn't implement the games. Dr. Gaul did. Crassus just gave the idea to her, in order to rise up. I do believe that Highbottom dislikes Snow from the jump because he sees his father in him--the need for power and approval. But in that case, as his teacher, Highbottom should've just been like, "Hey man, your dad was a dick. Don't be like him" instead of trying to sabatoge him at every turn.
Ironically, Snow thinks Highbottom is pathetic for being so obsessed with him. But then when Snow is older, he also beefs with a teenager who has no idea what is going on.
And I disagree with the comments that say he was a psychopath from the beginning. He's full of himself and possessive (his "love" for Lucy Gray is kind of creepy. He refers to her has "his" and seems to like how dependent she is on him--no surprise things fall apart as soon as she has her agency back). But he's not irredeemable. There are moments where the reader hopes that Sejanus or Lucy Gray or Tigris will get through to him. He just keeps cutting the good influences out of his life and fully embraces Gaul's messed up view of humanity by the end.
This is the most recent of the Hunger Games books. I have hope that the author will write another (I have a lot of questions about Plutarch Heavensbee's origin, for example--he seems to have gone from Evil Gamemaker to Rebel Leader, which would be a nice contrast to this one. Also Cinna. He says he chose District 12 and may have ties to Tigris but his origin is unclear. We don't even know his surname). I'd really take any story in this universe.

I’m sure someone already commented this, but there is a strong fan theory that Lucy’s cousin, Maude Ivory, is the mother of Katniss’ father. For a couple reasons - the covey’s house is described in the same location as Katniss’ family house in the seam, at the end of the road near an open meadow. Katniss’ father brought her to the lake/lake house several times. Her father was a wonderful singer, and sang often. Maude Ivory, Katniss’ father, and Katniss are said to be able to ‘hear a song once and remember it’. Lucy wrote the Hanging Tree song about the hanging that occurred right after Snow got to D12 as a peacekeeper. She and the covey only sang it publicly once before it was banned in all of Panem. So how does Katniss know it? Also, Katniss is named after a plant (her father used to tell her “as long as you can find yourself, you’ll never starve”) that people in D12 call swamp potato. But Lucy got the Covey members calling it katniss. There are a couple other things that I can’t remember at the moment. But I’m hoping if the author writes another book. we will glean a few more details. Hopefully about Haymitch’s story. He won the 2nd quarterquell and it was brutal. Then the capital killed everyone he loved bc he wouldn’t do what they wanted.

The books really help you to understand how self-serving Snow always was. You get to hear his thought process, which at times was downright awful or uncomfortable. Not a single decision he made came from a good place. Even wanting to take care of Tigris and his grandma wasn't a selfless notion. It was always pride, status, prestige, wealth or influence that drove his actions. He was only friends with Sejanus because of his father's money and power. Yes he really did like Lucy but you could see he had an obsession with her that was possessive. He wanted her all to himself. I think he always had potential for good (like Tigris said) with the right encouragement but every time he did "good" things, they were not rewarded the same way evil/selfish things were. I think framing Sejanus was his point of no-return. Lucy figuring it out and fleeing just solidified it for them both who he really was.

8:25 Fun fact - the Centennial Hall in Wrocław Poland - the building used for the arena in this movie, actually has a zoo nearby. So you could technically get yourself a photo of a giraffe with the "arena" in the background. Really good piece of architecture btw. used for sport and cultural events, suprisingly close to actual description to the arena in the books.
9:00 Well he isn't really "capitol".
18:00 They didn't have the technology yet to make the mines.
47:10 Fun fact - those sharks are for the 11th Hunger Games. Games notoriously won by Mags - the old lady from Catching Fire. Clearly a water arena helping her win. She was also a first tribute to actually get money and going on the trip around the Panem. I would speculate that it was another idea pushed by Snow to ensnare the victors, so they wouldn't run like Lucy Gray. To make them separate from normal people, to make them outcasts that wouldn't be treated as Capitol or District.
Also imagine, if in Catching Fire Lucy suddenly came back to save Katniss, by Volunteering herself. Now that would be actually funny. Hope someone writes a fanfics like that some day.

You have to see things from Lucy Gray's POV. She said she felt like she still had one foot in the arena. We saw what kind of PTSD Katniss had from the experience, and she was a hunter, experienced with killing and skinning game. What kind of trauma did the Games inflict on someone like her, who doesn't seem to have harmed an animal in her life? Every single thing Snow has done since arriving in the district has revealed his true nature to her.
1.- He already told her that he'd prefer to go back to life in the Capitol, despite the Games and the way the Capitol treated Lucy Gray and the other tributes.
2.- She has seen him kill without a moment's hesitation; he didn't think twice before he shot Mayfair, an UNARMED woman, IN THE BACK.
3.- He tells Lucy Gray that he "just found out" that he was going to be assigned to D-2, but she has lived here all this time, she knows how these things go, so she KNOWS that the news wouldn't have been dropped on him last minute. "You were going to leave," she says, catching him in lie #1.
4.- He slips up and admits to killing someone else, a 3rd person, and when she asks about it, he gives her a B.S. answer after hesitating for a long time. Lie #2. She has _already_ told him that TRUST means more to her than love, and now she knows she can't trust him the way she thought she could. So if she's acting a little weird in the cabin, it's because she is lost in thought, wondering about this man and whether or not she is as safe with him as she thought she was.
5.- And then he finds the guns in the cabin. And when he is talking to her, _facing her,_ he's holding the gun in a position where it would be easy to raise it quickly and shoot her if he felt he had to. And when he came looking for her in the woods, HE BROUGHT THE GUN WITH HIM. If she was watching from a safe distance, this would have been a red flag to her, ESPECIALLY if her post-Games PTSD has kicked in her fight-or-flight reflexes (and it SHOULD).
"If something's wrong, let's talk about it." Says the man holding a rifle that he has already used to kill a woman whom he felt was a threat to his future.
I DEFINITELY recommend the book, though it's a bigger one than Mockingjay was. I got it in audio format, though, and it went quickly over a couple of days. But you will see that Snow's "heartbreak" isn't really what it seems. He sort of decided that Lucy Gray was his and he didn't really do anything to find out what _she_ wanted. Even when he got to D-12 and got to see her again, his entire focus was on getting back home. He sold out Sejanus with the mockingjay because he figured Sejanus' dad would buy his son out of trouble again, and if _he_ didn't reward Snow for keeping his son from doing something stupid, then one of the higher-ups would reward one. As soon as he finds out he's headed to D-2 for officer training, he's thrilled because it gets him closer to home and "civilization," and Lucy Gray will adapt in time; she doesn't know what's best for her, really.
If you thought Gale was a scrub, trust me you will feel the same about Coryo.

They did clemie so dirty in the movie 😭 in the book she was assigned to write the proposal with arachnae and snow, arachnaes death had her shaken and her and snow decided they wouldn’t write it. However he decides to write it himself and then say they had both written it, she never takes the full credit. Then I’m assuming this part was just cut bc it was already a long movie, but throughout the book she starts to grow scales similar to the snakes that bit her, as she still appears throughout unlike in the movie where she just kind of disappears. People theorise that snow was the one to push the animal like visuals to normalise her new appearance and she popularises it, hence why Tigris looks the way she does by final book/ movie.

I seriously don’t understand Clemmie‘s character in the books at all. Because she was very nice and Coryo kind of liked her and found her pretty and they had sweet scenes. But it amounted to nothing?? In the end of the book she isn’t one of the friends that goes to visit with snow. Like i really want to know Suzanne‘s idea here for this character. They say Livia could potentially be who he married even though he hated her, but he was fond of Clemmie and i kind of got an idea of seeing him being with clemmie actually or like i just don’t get it. Last time they saw esch other it was both of them last in the games and they part in friendly way but when he comes back from district 12 she is nowhere. A lil rant but it’s been on my mind since last year

They make a lot of parallels between Katniss and Lucy because it's believed that Lucy is actually a relative of Katniss. The general consensus is that Lucy's cousin, Maude Ivory, is Katniss' paternal grandmother. Not only does she keep a goat for milk like Prim, but she and the Covey know of the lake and house. The Hanging Tree song was sang once before being banned, and yet Katniss and her father still know it. It's believe it was passed down in their family. Suzanne Collins didn't confirm anything, but she did note that Maude Ivory only needs to hear a song once in order to learn it. Maude is likely the mother to Katniss' father, and since women take mens' names, her name would have changed to Maude Ivory Everdeen. We know that Katniss' mother also knew The Hanging Tree was a banned song, and she probably knows through tales of it's inception being passed down since it was performed publicly in the Hob. Katniss' father had a real Covey spirit from what we know about him, and Peeta even mentions once hearing Mr. Everdeen sing the song while trading at his parents bakery.

    Loved the reaction!
This movie did many things well but it failed to show just how twisted Snow's mind was the whole time. He didn't help Sejanus because he cared rather he did so to save himself. He never truly loved Lucy but wanted to possess her and felt she was owed to him after all he did for her. Everything for him was about power and ultimately it was that love of power that destroyed him.
By the end you can see in his conversation with Dr.Gaul he honestly felt the Hunger Games were truly needed to show what humanity ultimately was. His mind had become fully twisted by that point and no doubt feel deeper into darkness as Gaul's apprentice.
The movie also failed to show the many connections between Katniss and the Covey. It is thought by many, and with good reason, that Maude Ivory is perhaps her grandmother. Looking at the original movies now I can only imagine what is going through Snow's mind when Katniss wins, when she becomes associated with mockingjays, and especially when The Hanging Tree is sung.

  • @rskyBindy
    @rskyBindy 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

One of my favorite things about this movie is the ambiguity of what actually happens at the end with Lucy. Some people believe that she never actually hid in the forest after she left the cabin, and that Snow just hallucinated everything that happened after he was bit by the snake. He appears to shoot her, or at least trips her up, and yet somehow immediately loses her again in the forest long enough for her to escape entirely. And of course the line about mysteries having a way of driving people mad. I believe she left the cabin, dropped his mothers scarf while running, and whether or not she put the snake there, it may have either been venomous and caused the hallucinations, or he could have just been so paranoid that he was causing himself to see/hear things. Either way its really fun to theorize about. Some people were frustrated by the ending, but I like getting to imagine the scenario that I think fits best. I don’t even personally think Lucy put the snake there, I think it was just meant to symbolize her betrayal in Snow’s eyes, considering that his experience throughout the movie had been that they are extremely lethal, he was just so caught up in his own assumptions and anxieties about her that he jumped straight to thinking that not only did she place the snake there but that it was deadly, when we obviously know it wasn’t deadly and have no proof she actually put the snake there to begin with. Super interesting to think about!

Dean Highbottom was not evil…He was against the Snow family bc he knew what they were capable of. Snow’s own father is the reason why the Hunger Games even exist bc he stole and submitted a proposal that Highbottom wrote in jest as an actual proposition. Snow is the reason The Hunger Games grows and becomes popular, successfully desensitizing the Capitol ppl and dehumanizing those in the districts. Snow is evil the entire time and u see it in his actions. He didn’t have to kill that boy in the arena but he did, he didn’t have to shoot the mayor’s daughter but he did, he didn’t have to submit Sejanus’ plan to Gaul but he did, he didn’t have to cheat but he did. Everything he does is selfish and for his own gains because he’s a sociopath.

Yes, that is THE Tigris. She became a great Stylist and worked for the games until sometime between the 65-67 game. Many people say, Snow fired her, but she left on her own terms and there is a reason for it...Finnick O´Dare. The Theory goes like this...
You see, the Book is much darker and its hinted that Tigris (at the age we see in the first scene) had to ...well...sell herself, to get the family food. There is a line, when Snow gets angry because Lucy disgaced them. When he tells his frustration to Tigirs, she says. "Dont be so hard on her, during the dark days, everyone had to do stuff they are not proud of." Snow replies "Well, YOU didnt!" and Tigris says. "I guess you were to young, to remember how BAD it really was.... What im trying to say, dont judge someone who has to choose, between death and disgrace."
Later during the 75th games, Haymitch says "Finnick O´Dare, won his games at 14, the youngest ever. Because he wwas so young, the capitol couldnt touch him, for the first couple years, but at 16 ...."
So when Tigirs learned about that, she was furious. Her cousin knew what she had to do, to survive and yet he is selling other people. That was the point when she left. It cant have been earlier, because Katniss says "I remember her, she was a Stylist when i watched my first Hungergames, but her face was not that cat-like" This also means the Tigirs in Mockingjay is about 82-83 years old.

I enjoyed your THG reactions, thanks for sharing with us! I really liked this prequel because it was so cool to see the origins of everything happening in Katniss's time - how he started poisoning people to eliminate threats (which was revealed in Mockingjay 1 that he has done it many many times over the years), his attachment to roses (his mom), the muttations, and how the betting & sponsoring gifts started, and many more! It's just super interesting to see how many things implemented in the games directly came from Snow's ideas as well. Also, this one doesn't standout as much if you haven't read the books, but I love all the character name drops/"Easter eggs" which can be tied back to people in Katniss's time, just to show another layer of the history and the origins/relatives of some of the main series characters. Ex: Heavensbee (Last name of Plutarch, Head Gamemaker/Revolution guy), Arachne Crane (Seneca Crane, Head Gamemaker in the first movie), Lucky Flickerman (Caesar Flickerman, the host of the THGs), and I'm sure there are more.
Anyways, since you enjoyed the series, you should fully lean into the YA dystopia genre and go for The Maze Runner & the Divergent series as well hahaha.

Really liked this movie and the book. Really changed how I saw things compared to how they were by the time we got to Katniss. Really hope Susan Collins writes another book from Tigris's POV and we watch her as a stylist through the 25 Hunger Games, the first Quarter Quell, and see Snow as Head Gamemaker, and his rise to political power. I also wanna see Snow and Gaul design the Quell system, let us see more than few ideas for what twists the districts would've been in for. I'd like to think there was an idea to make the parents of the reaped tributes fight in the Games, or a year where it's all 12 year olds.

Wow, such an interesting watch. I thinl this one may be my favorite, its just so interwsting to see Snow be deconstructed like that, males his scenes in the original trilogy that much more interesting. I also lile the aesthetics of this one, feels more real and grounded compared to the OG 3 because of that, the smaller arena makes it feel more interesting and intimate too. Overall it was pretty darn good.

in the books, Snow is pure evil. his inner monologue and any thoughts of his classmates or even his family and lucy is pretty disgusting. so nothing's turned him into evil. it's just there, his true self.
not to add: the last dialogue "It's the thing we love the most, that destroy us."
snow loves himself and power more, so that's the reason of his downfall.

There are theories Katniss and Lucy are related through Katniss's father who may have been Covey like Lucy. He is the one who taught her the Hanging Tree song. Lucy's cousin Maude may have taught the song to him. I don't think if Lucy survived, she stayed in 12 too risky. I think she ran away to 13 and may have been pregnant by Snow. Maybe that baby grew up to be President Coin, and that could explain her tendencies to act so similarly to Snow.

Snow was never a good person. It's definitely clearer in the book. However, it is there, subtly in the movie. Beneath the surface EVERYTHING he does is for self-preservation. He is a true narcissist and manipulator. He never loved Lucy. He wanted to own and possess and control her. That's not love. He's just bad, bad, bad - fights it a bit - but REALLY leans into in the end. Power, control, money - that's everything for Snow.
Eta: He was only running away with her because he saw no other option. The gun would be found and he would be hanged. As soon as he found the gun, he knew he could destroy it and go home eventually - which is what he truly wanted. Lucy would be the only loose end. She saw that immediately and bailed.

I also thought the singing aspect was incredibly corny…. If this was a standalone sure but compared to the original trilogy the prequel isnt even close to as good in my opinion 😅 I’d rather have had haymitches games or a story about the war that started the games

Snow wasn’t a sociopath from birth. He was selfish and possessive, yes, but the whole point of the book is that he chose to be awful and that he had the potential to be a good person but threw it away in favor of power. Acting like he was always evil goes against the entire point of the story.
