Commercial Dolby Atmos has a 7.1.2 (9.1) channel bed and up to 118 discrete 3D objects. Due to space and data rate limitations in consumer media, the consumer lossless TrueHD version of Dolby Atmos has a 7.1 channel bed and uses a technique called spatial compression that analyzes the steering metadata in the mixing software to allow up to 118 objects to be "clustered" or "zoned" into larger groupings of objects with similar 3D panning coordinates rather than each and every discrete object being encoded individually. The final product is packed, encoded, and output as a 16 channel track with additional object panning and sizing metadata.

I am running a 7.3.4 atmos system in my movie room viewing a 77” oled . I repurposed my old system and placed a 5.1 set up in my bedroom with a 75” tv. My living room has a 6.1 b&w system. I am using a sound bar in my kitchen. Over the past summer I installed a 58” 4K television and 7 speaker system in my garage. The atmos system is really awesome.

I was surprised how well a Sonos integrated system sounded, my friend has it through his house with a main server in the laundry room, he can move around each room and watch the same movie, or connect rooms to play the same music through out the house using a playlist on his phone.

Nice video explanation I'm actually subscribed to you. I normally never subscribe to a lot of tech guys because I'm a tech guy myself. However, I'm more an audio/video guy.
I think one of the important factors that a lot of audio explanation online fails to explain it is that people need to have realistic expectations. Yes Atmos is great, if you have a full surround speaker setup. A TV with Atmos surround decoding will only simulate the experience in the same way that older tvs had 'Dolby digital 5.1' or labeled as 'surround'. This was before HDMI was around during component video era. You cannot get real surround sound from a two-speaker setup and you cannot get full Atmos experience from a sound bar, even if they have multiple speakers coming out of the front with one pointing at the ceiling because you're missing your back/side speakers plus the positioning and power comes into play. Atmos creates a bubble when it's positioned around you. Obviously, you'll hear things slightly different if somebody is going from a television, to a sound bar, because of the multiple speakers in the front and it being a different type of sound but a receiver with this full surround setup is the way to really get a full Atmos Experience. It's also good for sound bar decoding. Whenever I see audio and video being explained online very rarely does it get mentioned that the way to go was with a receiver and a surround setup. If you can't get that due to the size and limitation of the house/apartment then obviously stepped back down to a sound bar.
Online I see a lot of people pushing sound bars and people are purchasing them even the really expensive variety and then listen to a receiver with the surround sound setup and it's like night and day.

What do you recommend for just watching tv. My tv does have Earc but will a under $500 soundbars give me good sound? I don’t play games etc.

    • @mountain.spider
      @mountain.spider 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@floydald For what you’re using it for I would definitely recommend a sound bar. Things like Atmos are normally included in either subscription paid movie streaming services like Apple TV+, Disney+ etc. like in the video said or UHD stations on TV like Comcast etc.
for regular TV watching you don’t wanna go overboard and buy a full-blown surroundsound system because not all the channels support it and it would be overkill. If you’re not into gaming, or separate movie theater watching like on streams, or 4K Blu-ray Disc. It makes no sense to go that route.
You can go the middle direction and go with the sound bar system. Just make sure that it has a subwoofer. I would normally go with Klipsch sound bar but I have a surroundsound system and not into sound bars cause I can’t really recommend one but if I had to choose one I would go with the Klipsch route because they make good products however not everybody likes their sound because their horn driven speakers and some people say they sound too bright to them depending on the ear. But yeah about 500 is the middle ground maybe even 700.

Excellent comment! I've been into Atmos from the beginning and I've gone from budget to mid-range to my current high-end audiophile grade 5.2.4 small living room setup (click the Red Dragon twice to view) so I've had my fair share of experience and I I would just like to say... your comment is pretty much banging on. 👍

    • @mountain.spider
      @mountain.spider 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@totalplonker824 I saw your videos and liked them.. nice setup. I saw that you had your speakers pointing directly at you wall (front mounted) which is the way to go instead of reflective.
Reflective you need to have a specific height ceiling so that it can rain on you but sometimes it can spread its to thin. Vs direct, ceiling aimed at center is the way to go. I wish more would adopt that set up style. The funny thing is that some receiver manufacturers actually had that set up before Atmos was the thing, it was called heights channels. Aimed at expanding the sound stage. Now its properly being used.

  • @ronmurphy4234

Thanks for taking the time to inform people about Atmos, but maybe you can address my main concern with Dolby Atmos, it's the missing interaction between objects... I can fly an object around the room, but it' doesn't interact with its environment. An example is throwing a rock in the pond that generates ripples, but with Atmos there's no ripples interacting with other objects like the shore. In addition is all the additional hardware required, this normally results in cheap components like amps or speakers. can you address these concerns?
I have a Krell 5.1 system that sounds much better then any Atmos system I've reviewed, the big difference is Atmos will rely on moving objects from speaker to speaker, attempting to create a bubble of sound... the Krell on the other hand makes the speakers disappear completely, an example of this is the opening scene from Open Range, I'm sitting in the middle of a wheat field with rustling wheat and a thunder storm off in the distance, I'm in a bubble of sound because the speakers disappear. Check out the train wreck scene in Super 8, the train door is ripped off, hovers in the air, and lands in the middle of the room...
I do find it funny how people keep attempting to put the listener on the stage between band members, but that's now how live music sounds... you're at the back of the theater, or front center stage... but never standing in the middle of the stage.

The father of Atmos is Dolby Prologic 2zx..that has also 4x Upfiring speakers, CL, CC, CR, L,R, Side L, SideR, RearC, RearL,RearC ,
6 channels audio ( 5.1) and for the rest, metadata.

Great breakdown. Perhaps on a future video run demo / pro’s / con’s of sound bars that have upward fireing speakers with rears, versus a traditional system hooked up to a receiver which both run ATMOS. To my mind a sound bar would do this better as it has specific speakers to push sound up.

Personally, I found understanding audio objects crucial to comprehending how different Atmos is from traditional audio approaches. A sound engineer’s ability to assign coordinates in the 3D space during mixing rather than being restricted to conventional channels helped me understand how Atmos can scale from 2-channel headphones to dozens of independent speakers in a cinema installation. I’ve noticed that you use Ford v Ferrari in recent tests. It’s a great state of the art example. Also check out Roma on Netflix. It’s not as in your face as action films but in many ways the Atmos audio serves as an additional character in the story.

I finally figured learned how to place sounds to different Speakers of my Dolby 5.1 Sound Sound bar with DaVinci Resolve (FREE). I bought DR 17 STUDIO because it's supposed to be able to mix Dolby Atmos. I now have been told that one needs (besides expensive Equipment) some kind of License from Dolby. And much like TH-cam not even supporting Anything but Stereo UT doesn't even support 5.1/7.1Surround sound much less Dolby Atmos.

    Thanks for a great episode.
As my Panasonic TH-55FZ950U TV only has ARC and optical, I assume it will not pass ATMOS through to an ATMOS soundbar or receiver. Wanting not to have to replace the TV, my best option seems to be Apple 4K connected to an ATMOS enabled receiver with passthrough to pass the video signal to the TV. Most soundbars do not have passthrough - correct?
I am thinking of getting a receiver like the Yamaha RXV6A, using my existing Magnat 5:1 speakers and adding at least one pair of height speakers. The Yamaha can use MusicCast for rears which may save visible wiring. Is there another choice you would suggest?
In truth, as we mainly watch drama, voice intelligibility is actually more important than a surround experience. We only have a small area with lounge against the back wall 8 ft and 10 inches away (2700 mm).
    Any thoughts much appreciated.
Finally, why do you feel remote device like Apple TV 4K delivers best results?
    Greetings from Brisbane.

Some soundbars are very upfront with the audio codec that it's using on the display or inside of the associated app. Most TVs have a display or audio button that will show some general information about the signal being received/sent. I've seen some include the audio codec, but most don't. It purely depends on the TV.

An unlocked consumer Dolby Atmos soundtrack (where objects are allowed to travel freely with 3D panning coordinates such as the new 4k Blu-ray of "Dune" 2021) can support a layout of up to 24.1.10. Consumer DTS: X is a fixed channel format in either standard 7.1.4 or IMAX versions with 7.1.5. If you have a particular processor or receiver that can handle more than 7.1.4/7.1.5 processing, then DTS: X Pro can upmix these limited tracks to 32 speakers using matrix logic steering techniques. It's not discrete audio information, however. DTS: X Pro is only in a limited number of products right now.

HDMI connection especially if it’s HDMI 2.1 can handle audio and video going through one line that’s the whole point of using them instead of going to traditional yellow , blue, white and red green component cables or the classic yellow, white, and red from vcr era.
Your receiver should have an input and an output built in for hdmi. You connect all the components to the in hdmi. If you look at one of the connections it would say HDMI out, the purpose of this is to have everything connected directly to receiver and then the out portion would connect your television because you’re using a projector and you should have a projector box that has an HDMI in and it should be labeled arc as well.
So you would go your Apple TV plus box and to let’s say the Blu-ray player hdmi in, then get another HDMI cable that supports hdmi 2.1 as well to go out of your receiver and connect to your TV or protector box HDMI in. Labeled arc.
What’s happening here is that the audio and video of your Apple TV is pushing it into your receiver , decoding the sound and translate it to your speaker’s , then your receivers also pushing the video portion out to your projector and your projector, to the wall.

I have 300 Bose sound bar and a 7000 Samsung TV set I can’t get the Dolby atmos to work. On the tv I can’t turn the Dolby atoms to turn on on the tv. I assume that’s the sound bar is not Dolby atmos.

You are correct, this soundbar doesn’t support Dolby Atmos.

It isn't for every one, because it require many speakers and spaces to set up. The whole speaker system is extremely expensive.

Dolby atmos used to mean something.
It's now been liquidated down and the logo put onto low end junk like bottom end soundbars.
95% percent of people have an atmos product in the home that doesn't replicate how atmos is supposed to sound at all.

You are correct. A lot of Atmos implementations on products aren’t majorly different from non-Atmos. With surround sound systems and soundbars, it typically makes a pretty substantial difference. But headphones and single speaker setups, it’s not game changing.

I can achieve a true 3D experience with only 2 main speakers on either side of the screen. The secret is to cancel the cross talk signal that arrives at the ears. For example, the left ear should only hear sound from the left speaker. And the right ear should only hear sound from the right speaker. The result is much more convincing than having extra speakers all around the room.
